The whole "controlling development" thing is completely exagerated. It didn't stop the development of many K alumnis, latest of which was Kaprisov. It's the 2nd best league in the world and Michkov belongs to one of its greatest franchises.
Judging from how current mgmt believes in, talks about, and beefed up development dept - I think it is a factor.

The rumour of wanting to trade #5 down with Detroit (#9 and #17) to able to pick Reinbacher isn’t what I was hoping for when going through this tank. I was expecting a 1st line guy because this team is filled with promising young D.

Next year the Habs probably get a top 10 (draft not as good) and then the picks will get further. So it’s kinda last call to get a potential 1st line star ( and maybe superstar ).

What a blessing that would be for Yzerman.

Chantal!!! Wake them up.

On top of next year being loaded with dmen. This is the year to pick an elite forward.

And what are those beliefs? That's pretty broad and sounds like narrative building.

Omg they beefed up the development department, a sure sign they can't let a prospect develop in his home country

Their whole platform was essentially development. From Gorton to Hughes to MSL - Countless articles of them talking about it lol but sure I’m ‘narrative building’ Believe what u wish. We’ll see come draft day.

The Michkov legend continues to grow everyday. It has no ceiling - and all based on basement draftniks.
To be fair, the fact 0.00% of team scouts put anyone else BPA @ 5 ahead of Michkov, didn’t go unnoticed. On the other hand, I’ve actually seen a BPA list here with Michkov at 6, I would say that’s already radically more diverse that the scouting community as a whole.

The problem is it takes time to evaluate drafting. Timmins had a really good year or two and then he had a series of years that were expected to be good until all the players busted. The tail end of Timmins/Bergevin drafts look good, major contrast to 2008-2016, but we don’t know if any of the guys from the last year or two will ever amount to anything.
For the top 5 players, the "consensus" in no particular order after 1 is a no brainer. These guys havent slipped through cracks, and really, scouts are not needed for these guys as they have been acouted by thousands of eyes. Let it come down to personal interview, sure.... but why would a team pass on any of these guys? For a lower pick AND not trade down a spot or two?
Every year the top 30 picks are pretty much taken by #40, so internal scouting is secondary.
The only way a player busts in the 1st rnd is lack of focus/mental weakness, work ethic.

best player available is something. Then there is a thing we call "analyse"
In the "best player available" there is the notion of "best" and the notion of "available". The ? with Mitchkov isn't about the "best " part but the "available" concept ; He's signed for another 3 3years , his Country is in war , Putin loves hockey.
I would also like to point that , if the Russian player comes just after the end of his contract terms, he will still be under the Entry Level contract conditions. He will be paid the minimum salary here when he could get higher amount in Russia. But if he waits few seasons ( 2 i think ) he's going to be enough old to be on another rule , and then he won't have to be on the entry level contract .
What he will choose between making minimum salary here or making 3-4 m$ or more, for a couple of season in Russia?

At that point , the " available " notion is far to be a sure bet

I would submit that the “available” is generally understood as draftable to play in the NHL one day.

The contractual part is one of the elements included in mock drafts. In effect explaining why there is a discrepancy between a team’s BPA and their actual draft pick.

I am sure that the word " available " for the teams managements and scouting teams is way more elaborated then the " we can pick " notion of the fans. I also sure that if the team is interested by a USA university player, but in interview the guy tells them that he isn't interested to play for Montreal, they won't consider him , because not available

Yes but there is also a chance that the Habs pass on Michkov and that he becomes better then Bedard. My first prayer goes to not passing on Michkov if he is available at 5.
If there is no chance that the Habs pass on Michkov should he fall to them, why are we hearing so much noise about how the Habs are reticent about him? Is there a massive misinformation campaign going on?

And that is really what its all about, Drafting michkov you need to talk to him and if he continues to develop you have to promise him BIG pay day. Can montreal afford this?

In that case why not trade Suzuki for a better player in Fantilli

I don't even like Fantilli all that much from what I've seen. I rather Suzuki who showed two-way excellence (for such a young player) in the 2021 playoffs, until Fantilli proves more.

Michkov is on a whole other level of talent.

You must not always believe rumours you know. Like last year that rumour we wanted to acquired Dach for a pick was just pure BS. It was a fantasy created by some wacko journalist. Thins rarely unfold like they say it will.
The Dach opportunity was so unique that it makes you wonder how in the world it could be replicated. Essentially, you had a complicit GM giving up on a recent top 3 pick with size and skill, aged 21 and playing a premium position for an 11th OA and spare parts in a weak draft. Where will we find another crazy man like that this summer?

At least, Hughes was first to the wire in securing Dach. A lot of teams were caught with their pants down.

I genuinely still can't believe they pulled that off. Absolutely ludicrous asset management to turn Romanov and some scraps into Kirby Dach lol

I don't think he gets appreciated enough as a future piece, he's still just 22 and I feel like he's only scratching the surface of how good he could be

Lol. I looked up what 4M rubles was worth today in USD. 4M rubles is less than 50k USD. An entery level contract with bonuses might be inciting to Michkov.

- Reinbacher could be a very good player makes sense in a top 10 especially this year.
- Reinbacher is NOT a good value with pick 5 based on who could be there.
- If the idea is to pick either Dvorsky or Reinbacher, you can drop down a couple of picks and pick up another asset.

At 5, if Michkov is still there, it's the ONLY possible pick if we want to maximize that value.

That's my resume.

The more I think about it, the less I can accept coming out of this draft with anyone else other than Michkov.

Would be a massive disappointment.
If we want him we can have him.

Just gotta trade to swap picks with Columbus and give them a very nice package in the process.
