Yeah Carlsson or Michkov are my two most coveted players at 5 and would be ecstatic with either. I just have serious doubts either will be there. If they are, it's the most ideal scenario for us to guarantee ourselves one of them. This is where trading up might be the best course of action to assure we get either.

It would be a great day.

The question is why would any of the top 4 move down?

there is a debate on whether or not we should Draft Carlsson if he is there at 5? lol you take him and run before someone calls the cops. Likewise for Michkov.

No you have to trade up for him, you have to assure he's yours.

Get CBJ on the phone, offer them Suzuki, 1st another top prospect, even Mesar for that matter.

Best case scenario would be to keep the 5th and acquire the 3rd, so we can draft Carlsson or even Smith for that matter. If we can get Carlsson, Suzuki becomes expandable. CBJ would be interested because they need a good Center.

We need a true dominant no1 Center.

I love Dach. But up to now, after 200 games, he has never broken 40 pts. I do expect him to eventually do it, but still. 80 pts is far away.

Suzuki, sure. Although I believe he would be best suited behind a top guy even if he can fill in that spot occasionally.

We can talk about adding/re-evaluating Slaf in 2 years. Let’s see how he adapts and develops because there is as much of arguments to be made for him to become a 3rd liner. It’s far from a done deal.

Sure one guy out of that list (Kidney/Roy/Heineman/Beck/Mesar) might become a 2nd liner, maybe two guys. But so far, except maybe Caufield, most of these guys would be better placed on the 2nd.

So… where is the top line 80+pts guy? He has been missing since Kovalev in 2007-08.

If there is one that has that potential when the Habs pick, it would be a wimpy ass move to go with Reinbacher.
I mean… he scored 38 points in 58 games this year. That’s pretty much 40 lol

Then we see Hutson very differently me and you because theres no way i would have someone like him on my third line.... hes someone i would want on the ice has much as possible we havent had a PMD like him in awhile

of course he can bust like any other prospect but watching that kid play today hes the real deal he has Quinn Hughes,Makar potentiel specially if he keeps working on that skating
I'm optimistic about Hutson, but the Hughes/Makar territory is not happening unless he suddenly becomes one of the best skaters in the NHL. An 18-20 min dman that is excellent on the PP is an awesome player. Since the Habs aren't going to have a superstar dman, they will roll the 3 pairings.

Ritchie at 29 would be unreal

would be funny if Kent moved up to get Michkov

And completely worth it.

I'd trade Caufield for Michkov without thinking twice.

No need to move up, just trade Caufield for SJ's pick, then pick up both Michkov and Smith.

Michkov will be that good.

That is actually a better strategy timeline wise, because goalscorers usually peak earlier in their career. Caufield will peak very soon, in the next three years, most likely. Meanwhile players like Suzuki and Dach will excel in their late-20s, like most all-around centers.

Then Michkov will be at his absolute peak.

The question is why would any of the top 4 move down?

Because Hughes is going to make them an offer they can't refuse - and hopefully one of Columbus and San Jose are very high on Will Smith.

For example is this a fair offer to San Jose or Columbus:

To MTL: Michkov or Carlsson at 3 or 5.
To CLB/SJ: 5OA (i.e. Will Smith) + FLA 2023 1st + Mesar + Harris + Engstrom + DVO 50% retained

It may not be enough, we may have to go up a tier in prospects past Mesar/Engstrom. I don't want to go to Mailloux, Guhle, or Hutson. If push came to shove I'd probably do Barron or Xhekaj (really reluctantly). On offense, I'd probably do anyone aside from Suzuki, Dach, Cole, and Slaf. So Beck is on the table, reluctantly. If push came to shove, I might have to include Matheson, depending on what my scouts tell me about Carlsson and Michkov vs. Smith. It would be quite a coup for a team that wants to win now to land Matheson.

this board will explode if he is taken at 5
It’s more a question of skipping on Michkov and not getting compensated for it.

Take Reinbacher (if that’s who they prefer) but only after having traded down and we’ll be good. Don’t just pass on Michkov and get nothing for it.

Every single year, a player picked top 5 bust and a player picked 6-10 is better than player picked top 5. Every single draft mate.
And in every single draft, there is no way of ascertaining who that player will be otherwise he wouldn’t be picked in the 6-10 range to begin with, would he?

No way. You don't trade one of your two best players for a gamble like Mitchkov.

I get it. But 38 in 58 still I sent 40. But if you didn’t hand pick part of the quote to take it out of the context you would understand that he still isn’t a guy you can call a number 1 stud ppg+ which was the point.

Why you using math to destroy a narrative of the poster hahHah. I’ll call you evil :)

Did you read the initial post ?

I thought about this for a long time.

CBJ wants a Center.

We trade Suzuki + 1st Pick, + Kidney/Farell for their 3rd pick, we keep the 5th pick

This way we get both Carlsson and Michkov/Smith.

Exactly. If Habs are planning to pass on Michkov, its because something's wrong as per Bobrov who is the best to know whats going on... I'd expect Bobrov to push for Michkov; if he doesn't, that means a lot IMO. But if Habs do intend to pass and WAS or DET wants him badly, its a perfect situation to negociate compensation. Question: what do you think would be a fair compensation?

But then you have to factor in whether we will get a 5-7 pick next year because with a more normal injury situation and/or a little growth from the rookies/young guys then we could easily be looking at a pick in the 10-12 range next year.
To me its simple. Michkov, if they feel is not that risky is definitly above and beyond the other 3 (Smith, Carlsson and Fantilli) and I believe Fantilli/Carlsson are slightly above Smith. If they believe that Reinbacher can be that missing piece on defense and that Carlsson, Fantilli, Michkov are not longer on the table, all I would say is go for it. As simple as that. Same thing if they feel that Leonard in what he brings would be more valuable then Smith. Again lets go for it.

Its always BPA but lets not forget that its BPA for MTL market, for the type of team they want to build and the style of play they want to implement. So BPA in MTL and Arizona might be completely different (even if the same person was to select)

The chances of there being 0 trades or UFA signings is next to nothing which is why the exercise of drafting for positional needs is misguided and we should go with go with whoever projects to be the best player.

There's also not a lot of value in seperating wingers between LW and RW, there are some who really are much better on one side vs the other but for the majority it's kind of irrelevant. It's not as true for D but is still there to some degree. Also aren't you missing a top-6 winger, there's 4 core players listed and one missing piece which is 5 of 6. Now that might all depend on your definition of core but seems a bit strange.

My goal to see what was in the cupboard first, then identify the missing pieces. Trades will undoubtedly occur in the meantime, but it gives a broad picture.

By core, I meant « core material ». For instance, by my definition, Dach is. But not Anderson.

Their 8 or 9+top pick+prospect. Odds are one or more of the second-level guys, Reinbacher, Dvorsky, Leonard or the others will be still there. Pick 6OA and 8OA are close to a wash in terms of value.
