Imagine losing the trade for Gillies and then doubling down by making a worse trade for Hammond because something was actually given up in this one

The problem with the Hammond trade (this could end soon, but it probably won't) is that as of right now, it only looks like this was done to keep Gillies off the ice.

This trade should have been done to keep Daws off the ice and send him back to Utica and just let Hammond and Gillies torpedo us.

At this point, there's very little difference between any of them, aside from the fact that Daws has a chance at being an NHL goalie one day (he's absolutely not now, nor close to being NHL ready) and Hammond's NHL career (what little one he had) ended 6 years ago and Gillies never has and never will have an NHL career.

Caulfield is a scorer...but...Hammond didn't look like he had a prayer of making contact with that puck. Maybe I've just become such a goalie hater. Scorers are going to score but (1) how does he get THAT open and (2) even on a expected goal Hammond looked like swiss cheese.

It's not giving him the benefit of the doubt, it's sticking with him because bringing in 2 quality goalies in one offseason is near impossible.

He should be the backup, plain and simple.

That doesn't mean he shouldn't play, but he should be the backup and at this point you have to hope he's better than the last 2 years, but be prepared that he very well won't be.

No. It was implied or hinted at he was anything like that. He is a warm body.

Hammond was for goaltending depth, he’s getting a shot because Gillies sucked but we needed him also in case of injuries.

We have one single goalie in the AHL who is signed to a NHL contract and can be called up here. And the depth in the minors sucks so sending Schmid would up would kill Utica.

Hammond might be not be meeting even very low, buried deep in soil, exceptions but he wasn’t brought in here to turn things around in April.
