I think Herdman was trying to cover too many bases, especially for an away game:
- have a strong enough starting 11 to put Canada in a position to win
- give rest to key players who are most likely to put Canada in a position to win
- give some meaningful playing time to depth players (e.g. Cavallini, Kone) in case they are needed in Qatar
In the end, it was juggling too many competing priorities to get an away win in Concacaf. My hunch is if that getting into pot 3 was a top priority for Herdman, he'd have started his best 11. In other words, I get the impression that Herdman doesn't care S.F.A. about pots, and I like him all the more for that.
And it may be that I'm jaded from my experience as a Whitecaps fan, but I'd be perfectly fine if Cavallini was left off the WC squad for Qatar.
