Hockey Canada could really use some fat trimming, not just because of stuff like this but for a multitude of reasons, so hopefully this spurns some.

As vile and disgusting as this whole thing is, what is really left to investigate? Just the source of the settlement money? Without knowing the identities of the players there's not really a lot of ways for HC to lay down some punishment. And if there was a settlement agreed upon, well that would imply that the issue is settled wouldn't it? Kinda reads like the committee is just grandstanding but I didn't watch the hearing so maybe these guys deserve it.

I am not sure what is meant here by sanction, banned for X years to participate in a team Canada event (world and so on) ?

Because it was brought by a young woman who wishes to remain anonymous and who did not name the players. It is common in society for women who bring these kinds of allegations against athletes to not be believed and only in it to "ruin" the player(s) and "get rich".

Look up Deshaun Watson and just how vile people have been to the 24 women who accused him of a variety of things and who were found credible.

It is so gross

I understand this and agree it's disgusting. I personally would like to see all 8 of those individuals arrested and charged.

My only point was that in this case the victim sought monetary compensation from Hockey Canada and Hockey Canada was quick to move to negotiate said compensation. My opinion is that is Hockey Canada doing right by the victim whereas they could have dragged this out for years causing more stress and pain for the victim.

With regards to the rest, I think Hockey Canada has a lot of work to do to clean up their policies and hickey culture.

Where did you read that?

Minus the woman and people who have been sworn to secrecy, I'm not sure anyone knows who the players are so...

The Canadian government is freezing Hockey Canada’s millions of dollars in federal funding until the organization signs up with a new federal agency that has the power to independently receive and investigate abuse complaints and issue sanctions for inappropriate behaviour, Minister of Sport Pascale St-Onge said in an interview on Wednesday.

If Hockey Canada do that, it would open the door to what sanction (of much power does that new agency would have to hurt citizen), pure hockey sanction or because it would be federal they would create some kangaroo court with actual outside of hockey sanction power like fine or more ?

Not talking about previous non investigated without the new agency in place.

^ This sums it up nicely. ^

Where the settlement money came from is going to be next to impossible to determine - it likely goes into one big pot.

Fair enough.

As BounceRWay said, it feels like government grandstanding to me and I wish they would leave well enough alone - if for no other reason but to let the young woman heal and move on.

Of course hockey canada knows the names of those involved. Surely you can’t be that naive. They would have to be really inept if they couldn’t gather that much information
They don’t know the names, as the victim never provided names. Obviously you’re not keeping up to speed on the story.
House of Commons and NHL don’t know the names either.

If you don't think people on the team and at HC at the very least had gossiped internally about this and have an idea of who participated, I have a bridge to sell you

It's up to 8 players who are alleged to have participated, thats about a 3rd of the team

If the government opens up this can of worms, the young lady will have to be involved (she may want to put this behind her) and the players will have the right to defend themselves - they cannot rely on "gossip". This will snowball and no one wants that.

If the government wants proof that the money they donated did not go to the settlement, fine. Everything else has been settled and should be left alone.

What universe do you live in?

Hockey Canada weren't/wasn't thinking of the best interests of the rape victim/survivor when they settled quickly, they settled quickly to minimize any potential fallout to themselves.

That they chose hushing it up and covering their own asses over re-victimizing the survivor - by drawing it out with lawyers over years - isn't "doing right" by anyone, it's just cowardly assholes protecting them and theirs.

Did I say cowardly assholes? I mis-spoke.

I meant to write cowardly assholes who protect rapists. As quickly as they can.

So what should they have done then? The victim was looking for money and they provided her with that?

I mean they notified the cops to investigate. Shouldn't the cops be getting more flack here, it's there job to protect society and arrest those that commit crimes.

They did what the victim wanted and that's why this should remain a closed matter. Let's think this through...

First, the players are presumed innocent.

Second, if the player's names come out, the players and their attorneys are going to fight back and it will get ugly. "Ugly" is not in the best interest of the young lady who settled this and wants it to go away.

If everyone involved has put this to rest, the government should stay away.

Perfect example of poster who’s never actually played in a team sport at higher than elementary level

Agreed, that is pretty much where I'm at.
