this misguided act was likely considered patriotic by mr. hayton, and that's an unfortunate reflection upon the times.

Would expect Hockey Canada, along with every other nation to instruct their players before the tournament about the customs and procedures that are expected of them.
So, either a failure by Hockey Canada or a bad mistake by Hayton.
every game night he removes his helmet for the anthems at his OHL games last year and this year for his few NHL games he played.
So today, either he wanted to be a jerk and piss off the Russians or he forgot which seems unlikely.. Maybe he should focus on his game because he was lousy today as well as being a poor choice for captain!
Yea, for NHL games. But this is an international tournament. The anthems shouldn't be played to begin with. Hope this isn't a story going forward.
Wahhhhhh. Babies
Really? Didn't notice 40 other guys taking their lids off? He's only done it hundreds of times since he started playing hockey. It was a very poor choice and he should apologize. Then everyone should move on.Yes, he was wrong. May be he just forgot to do it. As a Russian I don't feel any offense. Too much pressure on this kid. Too much attention to the episode.
Being respectful is a reasonable expectation.Wouldn't bother me at all, these guys aren't even 20. I have realistic expectations.

Interesting to see what the IIHF does. If anything.
Did they all refuse to shake his hand in the lineup too? That's a good way to handle it. If he was just oblivious and forgot, it's a good reminder to him. If he did it intentionally, it'll get under his skin extra that they all counter-dissed him in the line. I like that response by the Russians.Yeah I saw one of the Russian players skating and arguing towards the ref after the anthem and wondered if a Canadian player did something
Absolutely. I think the Russians handled it quite well. Not shaking his hand in the lineup is an appropriate consequence. It doesn't really matter why.
It happened, it's disrespectful, it's an apology.
Isn't really making Peterborough or Canada look to great on the world stage. In the end though, I'm going to chalk this up to him being emotional and frustrated after being blown out, and not trying to be a disrespectful POS. I don't think the kid should get trashed for it, but he needs to know better than that
