Carey Price is our best hope. Who knows where Luongo will be after this summer and Fleury has always been one of the most inconsistent goalies in the league.

We can also hope that what we saw from Braden Holtby is a sign of things to come. A kid like that with ice water in his veins? I could easily picture him wearing the maple leaf and backstopping Canada to the gold.

I've been having the same thought. Brayden Holtby had a great playoffs and looks to be a solid goaltender in the future, but the fact that we're even discussing his name for the Sochi roster shows what shambles the state of Canadian goaltending is in.

Unless Lu Drops below a .900 save % I highly doubt you're going to see Holtby above Lu, unless he can transfer his playoff play over a full season, while playing more than 30-40 games. 2012-2013 is going to be huge regarding the development or regression of these players.

If anyone says Smith or Elliot i'll smack them.

It's like what was already stated in this topic: Go with whichever 3 are hottest at the time. Trust that Holland/Yzerman/whoever has more knowledge about the game and the goaltenders in general than random message board user #40586.

They're going to go with whichever 3 they believe will give them the best chance to win, regardless of the opinions of the fans.

Ya thats the thing though, a Junior A goalie will know A LOT more about goaltending then Holland or Yzerman ever could. And Im pretty sure they have a full staff of other qualified people to make those selections.

But where is the fun in being a fan if we can't hypothesize?

If the Pavelski shot is your definition of a big save, then Ward made several during the 5-minute PK Getzlaf put the team on. And, similar to Luongo against Slovakia, Ward saved the game against Finland by making an outstanding save in the final minutes.

The difference between Luongo's performance and Ward's performance is that Canada was a dominant team during their Olympic run, often right from the puck drop. Rarely did Luongo have to keep his team in the game while the Canadians were greatly outplayed. That's pretty much all Ward did in this tournament, since for 90% of the games they played, Canada never showed up for the first period.

I've gotten into enough arguments with you about Ward to know it's not worth debating. I guarantee you if Luongo was beat by the goals Ward was today, you'd be singing a different tune.

Umm that was a big save. 9 seconds left, Slovakia had taken control of the game & could have tied it with a good possibility of them winning it in OT. Oh yeah and Demo was the leading scorer in the Tournament.

He is the rodney dangerfield of goaltenders.

Right now I would tentatively say it'll be:

Luongo
Price
Fleury

But if Holtby keeps up his play I could see Holtby bumping Fleury. Barring complete collapses, Luongo and Price should be locks.

Was the save Ward made on the tournaments leading point getter?

If Luongo ends up getting traded to Toronto, then I think he's a shoe-in for the starting spot.

If he gets traded to say, Tampa, then maybe not.

What about the Steve Yzerman connection?

True, but I just think he'll be a god in Toronto and the fans there wouldn't tolerate any other goalie starting for their country. That would put some pressure on the management team to choose the crowd favourite, especially when he's the probable choice anyways.

As a hardcore Maple Leafs fan myself, I don't think Luongo, even if he were traded here, would be a fan favourite. I'd take him in an absolute heartbeat, despite his horrid contract (right now, I have to watch the worst goalie in the NHL, Jonas Gustavsson, suck root on a nightly basis). There will be even more pressure to perform, especially because of his contract, here in Toronto and I'm not sure how he'd be able to handle it, especially since the pressure of Vancouver has gotten to him on a few occasions. Toronto is a goalie graveyard. He'd perform much better in a less traditional market like Tampa, imo.

So there would be pressure in Toronto for Luongo then in Vancouver? I really doubt that! The pressure he would face in Toronto would all be based around making the playoffs, in Vancouver its about winning the Cup. If he can handle the pressure from Vancouver (which he has with great character) I'm sure he can handle the pressure of trying to bring Toronto to the playoffs.

Didn't Demitra ring one off the post just shortly before that? If he doesn't hit the post, Luongo gets crucified.

Was the save Ward made on the tournaments leading point getter?

What's your point? Making a save in the final seconds on Pavol Demitra is the same as making a save in the final seconds on Chad LaRose.

I bet Holland's 9 seasons of professional goaltending pale in comparison to some Junior A goalie's experience.:sarcasm:

Yes I believe a Junior A goalie's knowledge of the game is much more expansive than that of a 1985 AHL goalie. Why is that so hard to believe? Because its Ken Holland?

The goaltending results of the Canada Russia Challenge have forced me to revive this thread.

In tonight's 6-5 loss, Laurent Brossoit allowed 6 GA on 27 SA for an abysmal .778 save percentage. In our previous game, another in which we conceded 6 goals, Maxime Legace had a very similarly abysmal outing. So, where do we go from here?

Actually I revived it ;) But yes it is dissapointing to say the least, seem intimidated by the big stage. I feel they should not choose goalies who play behind stacked junior defenses like Brossoit and Visentin the year before. I dunno I'm out of ideas....

Each year, our quality (and quantity) of skilled Canadian goalies have gone down in each of the last 3 or 4 years. I wouldn't say it's a pandemic, but it is an issue. It will be interesting to see who is coming up in the future. From what I know on the West Coast and in the rest of BC, there isn't a standout goalie coming up through the ranks being talked about here.
