Wouldn't say too many players "excelled" in this game but it was very telling that most of the pure skill guys weren't noticeable. Need more from guys like Marner and Reinhart. Crosby got roughed up and had a bad game, unusual costly errors. MacKinnon and McDavid have that competitive fire but couldn't make much happen despite their efforts.

I liked Morrissey and Toews on D, two guys I've called overrated in the past. On the US side, Matthews was quietly a 2 way beast and the team played an overall sound game. Nobody on their side stood out as being bad in this one. Huge advantage in net for USA.

McDavid did have a good game, Canada leaned on him too much but he still managed to generate some dangerous plays. Would've really helped to have a killer shot that demands respect on the blueline with Makar to help spread out the ice.
McDavid had the same problem he often used to have in Edmonton: the play dying as soon as he put the puck to the point.

The thing with Hellebuyck is he'll let in the odd soft goal or have the very odd bad game but, most of the time, he makes it look like the other team wasn't doing anything even though they were. He just makes it look easy with his positioning and being able to read the play. It's like with a solid defenceman. You barely hear about them because they're not screwing up.
