He was just trying to stir up nonsense, it became obvious to everyone after a couple of posts.

Oh I know and you definetely didn't take the bait...

Coffey played with gretzky and lemiux

Coffey was also much more dominant offensively than Karlsson. It's a very good comparison, which is a compliment to Karlsson. Coffey was better than any current Canadian defenceman is now.

Relative to the time he played?

So you are saying that Karlsson is the best active defenceman in these two rosters?

Watched Coffey growing up.

Yep............better offensively then AK.

Coffey was unreal.

Defensively they are pretty even, both can be kind of suspect at times on that end, the nature of the way they play mostly.

where the hell is subban & letang? why is bouwmeester & muzzin on the canadian roster?

sweden.

Not only, size have a role in it. Big = tough to skate. Small = tough to push bodies around. See Nintendo 8 bit hockey for a display.

Erik is a good D-man whenever he get to use speed to hit or cover ice. But his "worthless" around the goal, when its usually bodysize that counts. Of course he could perhaps develop a mean streak and cheap shot people when they are close to the goal. On the other hand that could of course lead to more time in the box (or in the IR...), which is not were Ottawa wants him to be. So...Karlssons (and before him Coffeys) limitation in defending have also to do with his role so in that your are right, it has a lot to do in "how they play". And they play like that beacause: thats how they are built, thats were thier talent lay and thats how they are EXPECTED to play.

Sweden in paper, Canada might be better in action.

This goes for me as well, I believe Sweden will have some issues on defense. Canada seems to have a better match between players.

And the Karlsson discussion in this thread is ridiculous. Even though I'm Swedish. IMO he's not even the best d-man right now (and he has a lot of guys ahead of him on the best ever list). Pure offense, yes he is fantastic with the puck, but his defense is really poor from time to time. Don't like his work ethic in the d-zone and he has some problems with his positioning as well.

Yeah, you're right about all this.

I wouldn't want both those guys to play any other way then they do/did play, they are/were too much fun to watch playing their styles.

Canada just. If Canada didn't have questionable selections (Brodie/Gio should be there over Bouwmeester is the biggest error) then it wouldn't be as close.

Weber < Hedman
Karlsson > Burns
OEL = Doughty
Bouwmeester = Stralman
Pietrangelo > Lindholm
Vlasic = Hjalmarsson
Muzzin = Ekholm

It's really close, but SWE's top-3 has the edge over CAN's top-3.

OEL does not come close to being Doughtys equal. Doughty is the best defenseman of the lot at the moment.

1 subban and letang play the right side not left

2 canada wants to play boring shutdown hockey and win so it won't take the offensive guys that sacrifice defense for defense other than as the 7th dman. Burns this year subban in the Olympics.

Not as good as Karlsson.
They play different games. Would be interesting to see doughty be in a system that let's him play like karlsson and it would be interesting to see if karlsson could play as well as doughty if he was put into the Kings system.

LOL.
Karlsson isn't even the best now.
Comparing him to players like Orr (the greatest hockey player of all time) is ridiculous.

Bobby Orr played in an era when it was much more easier to score goals, goaltenders in the 60's and 70's were not very good compare to today's goaltenders. So im pretty sure that a talent like Karlsson if he played back then he would have scored 120pts a season also.

Back it up with some stats m8, Hammer, strålande, Lindholm, Hedman are ALL elite defenders.

Yes they are

I am really concerned about that Swedish defense.

Can they marshall all that talent and not end up as an also ran with The Sedins shouldering so much?

Orr won scoring titles. He beat out the top forwards of that era. Karlsson is putting up great numbers but he's not dominating the forward competition like Orr was and he is nowhere near as good in his own end as Orr. Orr could also kill penalties almost single handedly by playing keep-away with the opposition.
