Just checking if Drury has bought a plane ticket for Gallant to New York yet

Make sure that the plane is not hijacked to Columbus...

Though I somehow would love the idea they picked Jalonen instead. They are on some kind of rebuild anyway.

Man.

What a tournament.

Each year providing moments to remember no matter who wins.

Amazing display of pure Hockey!
I like it too so much. Players playing not for the money, but just for the gold and for their country, for free. Olympics as well. I hope the NHL owners can realize the potential that this has at some point, and let players always participate in olympics, perhaps even make it better for world championships and also make a great World Cup. No gimmick teams, no nothing, have less teams but perhaps best of 7 or best of 5 or even best of 3 system to tournament tree, and make it big.

The athletes from Russia did have 5 players from the Gold winning Olympic team of 2018. That is not an A team but that is a pretty good core. Canada essentially had an Spengler Cup team.

We didn't see any NHL players participating in the 2018 Olympics. And in any case, this year's Russian team was hardly Russia's A team either. And it can't be overstated that how fortunate we even are for this tournament being organized considering the global pandemic going on in the same time. I have some doubts that if the same can be accomplished in Euro Football cup this year.

That said, NHL not participating in 2018 Olympics obviously gave the Russians a huge advantage KHL being the second-best league in the world - and the Russians managed to take advantage of that.

Curious - do you tell people you're a vegan/crossfit/religious/whichever stereotype at every chance in unrelated conversations?

Woah woah hold it. I don't appreciate you grouping me in with the likes vegans/crossfitters and whatever.

No thanks. Just give us the Olympics with NHL participation and we're good.

They were not because Canada was also at 10 points. In the hypothetical tiebreaker both Latvia and Germany would have advanced over Kazakhstan and Canada.

Sure, but before the final day they didn't know how the earlier game between Canada and Finland would play out so there was no sense in preparing for a particular outcome. They would have needed to spontaneously take it to OT and risk playing Russia instead of Switzerland. For Germany it made more sense to simply beat Latvia, play Switzerland, and not care whether it's Russia or Canada that advances to the next round.

Completely agree. International Hockey is our sport at its purest.

The emotion, drama, the atmosphere at the tournament and even here is incredible.

It's the pinnacle show for the growth of Hockey worldwide and I can't wait for the next Olympics!!!

Obviously being ranked third in the group was a significant advantage compared to being ranked fourth but it was regardless the last game of the group phase. At the puck drop the reality of the situation had been known for many hours.

Congrats Canada.

As a Finnish fan I do think there were penalties in that overtime but my feeling is the refs would not have called much either way. They wanted it decided 3 on 3.

It was a close game between 2 very even teams. Both matches ended 2 2 and one each. Doesn't get closer than that.

Canada showed a lot of heart to come back from that awful start and come back for gold.

Finland are now a legit contender for every tournament at every level. We are in such a good place but wasn't to be this time.
the Finns have been legit contenders for over 10 years. I could be wrong, but doesn't Finland have the most medals since 2000? Including the Olympics?

Agreed.

It is such a shame that we are ruining this fine sport with this kind of thinking - this IIHF vs NHL confrontation. Somehow we are just unable to shake off this kind of thinking, and it is seriously slowing down the worldwide growth of the sport, imho. The major tournaments should be organized the same way as they do in the FIFA Football tournaments (soccer that is, not that silly hand-egg thing). A major tournament being held every second year, for example. Players should always have the right to represent their country. The Club owners wallets shouldn't be the deciding factor here.

I also think having these IIHF tournaments every second year would be better, I'd argue it would also raise the appreciation and glamour of the tournament in the eyes of the North American viewers.

For the record, NHL is not doing any better - World Cup is a bit of a gimmick - nobody cares about Team North America and Team Europe. I'd argue that the players also are missing the passion, when they can't truly represent their country. This matters a lot, at least for the European born players.

How the f*** did Canada win gold? Seriously. I looked at the roster and had them being killed

I realize that lots of players on all teams said no this year--but the team we started with? Wow. Gold.
It's like others have said, we send an all-star team and lose in the Quarters. We send a team that lacks all stars, they lose the first 3, 4 in total, but somehow win Gold. Go figure.

Proud of them.

Went out and there were a bunch of kids playing hockey on a basketball court and more kids playing lacrosse on a football field. Very Canadian and nice to see. Good day, indeed.

What a great game to watch. Playing the Finns is always fun because they always show up. This was far from their best team as I was only familiar with three or four of their players. Canada at least iced a team made up primarily of NHLers albeit not many of the elite variety. The game was still entertaining as hell and I for one love the three on three overtime. It beats the hell out of a shootout and it caused me to forget to breathe a number of times.
