As part of a project I'm doing in a Political Science class, I read this book.

And being the sports nut that I am, my first thought was "Wow, how good would that hockey team be?"

My random thinking led me to try to actually put together a 25 man roster from the two countries for the next Olympics. Obviously this was pretty hard to do considering the talent pools, but in the end, I came up with this:

Corey Perry//Sidney Crosby//Patrick Kane
James Neal//Johnathan Toews//Phil Kessel
Zach Parise//John Tavares//Jamie Benn
Tyler Seguin//Joe Pavelski//TJ Oshie
David Backes
Patrice Bergeron

Ryan Suter//Shea Weber
PK Subban//Ryan McDonagh
Kevin Shattenkirk//Alex Pietrangelo
Duncan Keith
John Carlson

Johnathan Quick
Carey Price
Jimmy Howard

Just thought it might be fun to see what others thought and what your teams might look like :)

Getzlaf. And I highly doubt Carlson would make it before Letang.

as a blues fan i'll say that shatty and oshie don't belong here. where is doughty? getzlaf? giroux? stamkos for gods sakes

I'll give it a shot though i bet I'll leave somebody out and make somebody on the board unhappy

Get rid of Kessel, Oshie and Neal. Add Getzlaf, Giroux and Stamkos. Centers are better players than wingers, that's why they play center. Get Howard out of there, put in Miller, Crawford, Bishop, whoever ...

Actually, Canada would not mind states like the M States- Maine, Michigan, Montana, Minnesota, and Massachusetts, joining our country as Provinces. They all are near the Canadian border, and actually there were voices in Maine and Minnesota a decade back when George W. got re-elected, who wanted their states to be a part of Canada. There is a deep love for hockey in those places, the weather is similar to ours, and are more liberal like Canada.

Canada welcomes all the Northern "Blue States" that would mesh well culturally and socially with Canada. Canada does not fit well the deep southern states like Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, etc. It is up to the American people in those Blue States to let your voices be heard, and that you want to be a part of Canada. Canada would gladly annex all those territories, providing we can benefit from the merger. We will not accept the States from the deep south that would bring Canada down. Thank you and let your voices be heard my friends.

P.S. I would have Getzlaf, Giroux and Stamkos there. You cannot leave those guys off.

OP made a lot of mistakes. Why no Stamkos, Getzlaf, or Giroux? Why Neal? Why isn't Duncan Keith in the top six for defenseman? Why Oshie and Shattenkirk? Where's Doughty? Why Howard?

This is really tough because there's a lot of young guys who I think could explode and make themselves an Olympic type player... think about how fast some of these guys become stars. With that said, here is my best guess...

Connor McDavid- Sidney Crosby- Steven Stamkos
John Tavares- Tyler Seguin- Phil Kessel
Patrick Kane- Claude Giroux- Jack Eichel
Jamie Benn- Jonathan Toews- Corey Perry
Ryan Getzlaf, Nathan MacKinnon

Ryan McDonagh- Drew Doughty
Ryan Suter- Shea Weber
Alex Pietrangelo- Jacob Trouba
Duncan Keith, P.K. Subban

Carey Price
Jonathan Quick
John Gibson

It was really tough leaving off players like Pavelski, Bergeron, Couture, Galchenyuk, Hall, JVR up front as some have been there before and others I expect to explode by 2018.

On the back end guys like Carlson, Ekblad, Hanifin, Murray, Jones all got consideration as well, I really like Carlson, but I couldn't find a way to fit him in and the others may be too young to patrol the blueline in 2018.

In net, Price and Quick were easy decisions, the 3rd spot was the tough one and I went young as I expect Gibson to be a star by 2018. Bishop, Bernier, Crawford, Fleury all got a look for the 3rd spot.

My roster might look something like this:

Forwards:
Steven Stamkos-Sidney Crosby-Claude Giroux
Tyler Seguin-John Tavares-Jamie Benn
Patrick Kane-Jonathan Toews-Taylor Hall
Corey Perry-Ryan Getzlaf-Patrice Bergeron

Extra forward: Phil Kessel

Defense:
Ryan Suter-Shea Weber
Ryan McDonagh-Drew Doughty
Alex Pietrangelo-Duncan Keith

Extra Defenseman: P.K. Subban

Starting Goaltender: Jonathan Quick
Backups: Carey Price and Ben Bishop

As a Blues fan I cringed when I saw Oshie/Backes/Shattenkirk on the roster.

Steven Stamkos - Sidney Crosby - Patrick Kane
Jamie Benn - John Tavares - Tyler Seguin
Zach Parise - Ryan Getzlaf - Corey Perry
Joe Pavelski - Jonathan Toews - Claude Giroux
* Phil Kessel

Ryan Suter - Shea Weber
Duncan Keith - Drew Doughty
Ryan McDonagh - PK Subban
* Alex Pietrangelo

There will be complaints, but it's mostly just team Canada plus Suter, McDonagh, Kane, Quick and maybe Parise or Kessel.

Stamkos Crosby Bergeron

Couture Toews Carter
Benn Getzlaf Perry
Parise, Giroux

Suter Weber
McDonagh Doughty
Keith Seabrook
Pietrangelo, Subban

Price

My roster and lines are virtually identical to yours. Well done. What an amazing team this would be.

Stamkos - Crosby - Giroux
Benn - Seguin - Kane
Parise - Toews - Pavelski
Bergeron - Getzlaf - Perry
Kessel, Tavares

Suter - Weber
Keith - Doughty
Vlasic - Subban
McDonagh

Quick

Luongo

Pretty outstanding.

This would be my team right now:

Rick Nash - Sidney Crosby - Steven Stamkos
Jamie Benn - Claude Giroux - Tyler Seguin
John Tavares - Ryan Getzlaf - Corey Perry
Taylor Hall - Jonathan Toews - Patrick Kane
Phill Kessel
Martin St.Louis/James Neal

Duncan Keith - Shea Weber
Mark Giordano - Drew Doughty
Ryan Suter - P.K. Subban
Alex Pietrangelo
Kris Letang/Ryan McDonagh

Jonathan Quick, Carey Price, Ryan Miller

With that defence and goaltending I wouldn't be afraid to ice a super-offensive roster up front. Hall-Toews-Kane as a 4th line? Good luck.

So basically Pat Kane + John Quick on Canada?

It's Team Canada + Suter and Quick for sure. Then one or both of Kessel/Kane would probably be on the team as natural wingers are usually preferable to centers for the wings when everything else is even (especially speedy wingers on international ice).

I think only one of them would play regular shifts, you have Stamkos there (he already has played for Canada as a RW, and was considered to play with Crosby as a RW in Sochi), then Perry, and Seguin is on fire now. Than you have Carter, Neal, St.Louis, or Bergeron who's always considered rather a RW for Canada and played with Crosby in Sochi, and then Kane and Kessel. I would say that one of Kessel/Seguin would be a 13/14th forward. Seguin can't be a center, because there is already Crosby, Getzlaf, Toews, and Giroux. And Tavares, but he would play LW. Probably. :) That would be one hell of a team. LW - Nash, Benn, Tavares, Hall. RW - Stamkos, Perry, Seguin, Kane. C - Giroux, Crosby, Getzlaf, Toews. That's as good as it gets, especially right now when Nash and Seguin are on fire.
