Seth Jones vs. Aaron Ekblad

Who do you think is the better player, Aaron Ekblad or Seth Jones? Either has a good shot a being the #2 in Florida, but I'm curious as to who HFBoards would pick. Please try to disregard contracts, age, etc.

I was actually just about to make this thread.

Their production is nearly identical right now with Ekblad ahead by 3 points.

Ekblad obviously did this on the better team.. much better offensive options all around to pad his stats, and a better defensive partner in Forsling in addition to the team system that covers for his deficiencies.

Jones averages a minute more (which I'm assuming is EV minutes). Personally, I don't think averaging a minute more of ice time makes up for the significant team advantage Ekblad had until now.

So at least offensively, i'd give the slight edge to Jones.

I can't speak to a comparison between their defense as I don't watch much Hawks games, only based on what Hawks fans have said.. As for Ekblad, for as much as our board shits on him sometimes, most agree he's solid defensively despite his very obvious skating limitations.

I’ll take Jones in the same team/situation…though we may have our answer on the ice in the coming couple of months. I’m not sure the gap will be big either way.

Moving forward I’m way more confident in Jones’ mobility holding up and thus his game aging better…and frankly unless Ekblad takes a team-friendly deal to stay in Florida…Jones’ contract (with retention) is likely to be better as well.

Technically I think Jones is really more of a belated Montour replacement (that second big minute RHD to round out the top four) than a guy that was brought to replace Ekblad in the future, though his presence clearly gives the team more latitude to negotiate with Ek without their backs to the wall at RHD.

I think Jones has a lot more tools offensively at this point in their respective careers, but his decision making can be pretty poor. Jones is now blaming his play on him trying too hard, which is a total farce.

It’s pretty close imo. I’d rather have Ekblad on my team, that’s obvious. If I’m Florida I’m not sure. I don’t think much of Jones on the PP which has got me questioning the fit in Florida. Is he supposed to be the PP1 guy there? I’d hope not for floridas sake.
