WJC: Canada 2019 Roster Talk

Yeah TSN listed him as only one of three defencemen viewed as locks/favourites.

Regarding Bowers, I have seen next to nothing of his play this year, but the numbers are discouraging. Yes, he isn't going to be selected to Canada to play a first line, top PP role, but it hurts his chances when the other guys Canada is looking at for those roles (Veleno or Dellandrea for instance) also happen to be scoring at a good clip. Pretty much everyone agrees that Canada is going to look for scoring through depth. Even with three lines producing pretty well at even strength last year Canada still relied on a hot powerplay. Four lines that can score should be the goal.
 
Is it consensus that Lafreniere will make the team? Would be crazy to see a player who is draft eligible 2 years out, not 1. I believe the last person to do it (for Canada at least) was McDavid in 2014, no? I do understand that Lafreniere would be eligible this year if it weren't for the pre-Sept 15 birthday draft rule.
 
I've seen Dellandrea play numerous times. Most recently November 30th where he had 2 goals. He is a very good player however he takes a lot of stupid penalties and has been horrendous at face-offs this year.

Rasmussen is playing decently well for Detroit. Contributing NHLers shouldn't be expected. Canada is likely to only miss two players due to the NHL, which is among the lowest totals ever for Canada. Even in lockout years Canada has twice missed two players. This is a rare opportunity.

Dellandrea has a 57.5% FO... Horrendous? He's 4th in the OHL for face-offs won.

He's been good the past couple of games. November 30th game was horrible 9/25. There has also been a few other bad games. Last year he went through a couple of slumps. I retract my horrendous remark as I meant to add it to the game I saw him play Nov 30th.
 
Eh...There was really no reason at all to even consider Merkley. There's just way too much risk there, for negligible reward. He's prone to killer defensive lapses, puck management issues, lackadaisical play, and bad penalties with a bit of a wild temper. Can't afford volatility like that in a tournament like this. He's got a reputation as tough to coach for a reason, and that's not what you want in a short tournament where you have to get everyone pulling together within a system very quickly. With Bouchard and Ty Smith as locks, they just don't need Merkley's PP skillset as a specialist. It's a headache that isn't even worth bothering with in camp. Especially with how many RHD they already have in the group.

Another solid d-man I am surprised did not make it was Jett Woo, who would have paired well with his teammate Josh Brook.

RHD don't really pair well together with othe RHD at all. I'd have loved to see a Canucks prospect in Woo get a shot, but he's not one of the best 3-4 RHD available. He's not even the best on his own team, with Brook.


Stelio Mattheos isn't a great skater, and this team Canada is already going to be carrying a few mediocre skaters up the lineup who are just better offensive players than Mattheos. So they're going to be looking for others with better skating to fill out those depth spots that Mattheos would be competing for. He'd probably be gunning for a 4th line role, where more speed and energy is probably a better bet for impact in a limited role.

Ryan McLeod surprised me a little bit, not even getting an invite. I would've had him in consideration, maybe as a versatile spare forward...but i think he was in tough to make the team as a real playmaker, stuck behind some other real "playmaking" types. Seems like from the guys they've brought to camp, they're just looking for more "goal scorer" types to fill out the remaining scoring role spots, and McLeod wouldn't really be a fit on a checking/grinding/4th line type deal.

Question , at the beginning of this thread the posters were indicating this would be a stacked team, forwards and backend...now after reading the newest posts it seems this team will lack speed ?

I'm not understanding the difference in posts ?

I don't know much about this team, except that this team looks to be more of a physical team than last year ? But slower ? This is what I gather from reading the posts

More of a defensive team rather than offence ?

Can someone with knowledge of the players and coaching team please summarize this team and coaching style ?

There is enough information posted. You must have skipped over it. What you need to know is actually very little. Goals will be hard to come by. we have enough speed to compete. we have a four line team with interchangeable parts.Our defence is young and are going to challenged in their end.We don't have any player named Virtanen. Our goaltending tandem is as good as it gets. Coaching remains to be seen. I don't see any Steve Spott or Dave Lowry yet.

Just caught Craig Button's bit on Lafreniere and how he's going to be a big impact player for us this year. that would be great if it happens, I have my doubts, however. And Button's takes always makes me laugh. Last year he said Tippet would be an impact player for the '18 team. I guess one of these years he'll hit on one. blind squirrel and all.

While I’m very happy we won’t have to play against him, he’s not even PPG (much less over) and I strongly suspect the offense will continue to decrease. He wasn’t overly impressive in the summer, and he’s never been a huge offensive producer. Everyone lost their minds at his early production, which included a bunch of points coming from pucks bouncing off his ass or skates and a couple underwhelming shots that goalies whiffed on. Still a great pick for Ottawa, but he’s a good complementary piece, not a line driver. People expecting him to be a 70 point scorer are out of their minds.

Comtois with the C, Forementon will get an A and I would expect an A on the back end. Bouchard will be the top dog back there and has NHL experience so I expect he gets it. If they go with one more A I'm not sure who I would guess, it seems wide open. Maybe Cody Glass? But I could see maybe a guy like Hayton who was I think the highest pick on the team and plays a good 2 way game. In a way grooming him for the C next year possibly.

I really dont know on that last one

I think Glass gets an A before Hayton does.
