Have you watched the pre tourney games? Whether or not they are defensive liabilities in juniors is irrelevant.

So far, from what I’ve seen, this team Canada looks nowhere near good enough defensively to really challenge for a gold.

The game against Finland in particular, the D looked terrible on a couple goals. On Finlands’ second goal, the two D men literally stood there and watched the finish player standing about six feet from the net allowing him to take his time and snipe. On either Finland’s 1st or 3rd (I can’t remember which) the Finnish player who played the rebound was alone in front of the net. On the Finns’ 4th goal, the Finnish winger was left totally uncontested in front of the net with no Canadian player within 5 feet of him. (Yes it was a PK, however the Canadian Dman was playing up at the faceoff dot which is way too high)

I’m not going into panic mode or saying all is lost before the tournament starts.....but this three game sample hasn’t left me a lot of confidence in our blue line when playing against top end opponents. Here’s hoping I’m proven wrong with my concern.
This is how I felt as well. D core very weak defensively with poor decision making. With and without the puck.

I am not writing Canada off or anything I just think the d core isnt as strong as previous years. I think both goaltenders are quite capable however and the forwards are ok. I thought leason was so bad... Brutal skater terrible puck management. Lafrennier needs more of a shot.

Pre tournament games literally exist for the sole purpose of player analysis to best allow teams to prepare for the tournament.

If you’re not going to analyze what happens in pre tournament games then they wouldn’t be played as teams would not risk injury for no reason.

Sure you can analyze players...but calling the defending gold medal countrys' hockey system broke because they lost an exhibition game is ridiculous.

Does anyone else think they should not have taken three 18 year old D-Men?

On talent, no. But if Hunter didn't want to use 18 year olds then they should have limited the number of them on the team.

Brook is really talented and should have a good tournament. The only thing is that they're playing him on his off side. Hopefully the exhibition games helped him as in the third game against the Finns he seemed to be getting more comfortable. He should be able to skate the puck well out of his zone and get it up to the forwards on a consistent basis.

Phillips in the top 4 is going to really limit Canada. In the pre tourney games he was basically playing off the glass and out hockey, not the skill level Canada should take to the WJC

Some line changes:
Phillips-Bouchard
Brook-Mitchell
Smith-Dobson

Phillips Bouchard will be fine until they meet the better teams. IMO Bouchard has stood out on the PP , but other than that he has not distinguished himself. Phillips IMO would be closer to 7th D than top pairing. Lets hope someone on this D corps really steps up. So far I have found Mitchell to be the most steady D man. I am hoping that Smith and Dobson can get another gear from what we saw pre-tournament although both had good moments we need more consistency to win this.

I think the big difference with last year is the team does not have the Mete-Timmins paring that really dominated the tournament defensively. not sure if this year has defensive studs like Mete and Timmins were.
I think people don't talk enough about them, I think they really were the difference makers for Canada last year.

I never once said Hockey Canada’s system is broken or even alluded to it.

I simply said this particular team that was chosen doesn’t give me a lot of confidence in the D corps.

More for the team own internal analysis, we don't know much about what is going on inside the team. Your judgment can be held for the real games

So much negativity before the tournament even started...
So you’re saying because they aren’t tournament games people on these boards can’t have objective discussions about what we’ve watched to date?

I, like everyone else on this board I would assume, enjoy watching hockey and having discussions with other people, who also enjoy watching hockey, about the game we are watching.

Just because it’s a pre tournament game doesn’t negate the fact it’s still a game of hockey and what we are observing is therefore likely going to result in a discussion on a forum dedicated to hockey.

If this “negativity” upsets you, then I’d advise you to stay away from HFBoards period, as the registered users on this board are all big enough hockey fans that we’ve taken the time to create accounts to have online discussions with people we’ve never met.

Serious hockey fans are going to discuss and debate any game, regardless of how meaningless it is.

Stocked for the game tonight, hopefully Team Canada comes out strong against Denmark. I'll be keeping an eye on Suzuki and Brook and also Lafrenière. This should be a blowout.

That's true regarding Mete and Timmins. I recall some saying that Mete was a disappointment because he didn't score. He was a big addition to the team and that pairing was very important for Canada. I don't think that there will be a pairing that is that consistent defensively for Canada this year, but that can be mitigated in some ways.
