Don't want to derail this thread but I think it's reasonable to suggest the U.S. can challenge for gold. It's a deep team from goal out. A lot of good teams in this tournament though-including Canada. It will be tough.

I would suggest that challenge will come every year
Way too much talent coming south of the border to think otherwise but being a slight underdog or just below the radar this year means no pressure and you guys love beating us home turf or not
Russia I believe could go down as the favourite this year but I will leave that for TSN to have there bracket show and Craig Button to ordain the gold medallist

...or Scott playing normally.
Scott plays on the best team in the CHL, I really can't see his numbers matching what he's doing in the WHL this year.

Have past WJ's not taught you anything?

I also highly doubt Scott is going to be the #1 on this team, but we'll see

I agree that Scott having great numbers on a great team could be risky... but to be fair he is averaging 28.35 shots/60.
Compared to Dustin Wolf of Everett who has 26 shots/60
Prince George's starter is facing 32 shots/60

Obviously quality is not counted, but PA is not as great at limiting shots as some of the other recent dominant teams.

JAD is amazing, as someone who has watched him for years in the dub. Very good offensively, capable of driving his own line and making his own chances, and extremely intelligent and committed defensively. I’d be comfortable with him playing literally anywhere in the lineup. Give him some time to change your opinion, I beg of you.

driving his own line in the dub is a little bit different than a national team elite level tournament. I wouldn't use flowery language like extremely intelligent to characterize him, but he is a smart enough player and capable defensively which makes him good enough to play a 4th, line role imo and anything beyond that he has to earn it. but I'll keep an open mind and hope he delivers 7 games that match your expectations and not the 5 games of suckage I saw at the U18s. fingers crossed. It's amazing how the Formenton injury really screwed this roster up. It's thrown everything out of whack.

Goaltending will be the Canadian's downfall IMO. I don't see either option inspiring confidence in the group. That was pretty apparent in the U-Sports series. Hopefully the D-corps can minimize scoring chances against. Gonna be interesting.

That is an interesting take....I am pretty sure both goaltenders are going to be more then fine. Definitely do not see it being this teams downfall.

My take is based on what i saw from the U-Sports series. I hope i'm wrong.

In tourney's like the WJHC, goaltending is probably the most important position, particularly when it comes down to single elimination.

Another great thing about JAD is that he is energetic and a very shifty player. If I am not mistaken, he briefly played wing when he was on the Kings NHL club for a few games this season.

I believe Dipetro had a sv % over .920 in the USport games and Scott around .910. They both played fine and have been great all season long.

Also it's not like Ian Scott has been the best goalie in the CHL for this season and Michael DiPietro has consistently been elite in most to all competition the past few years.

Even if you disregard all this, Team Canada won in 2015 with ".909 on the best Halifax Mooseheads team ever" Zach Fucale as their starter, despite his best attempts to lose the gold medal game.

The REAL issue should be things like Markus Phillips playing over Jared McIsaac or potentially choosing Mackenzie Entwistle over Alexis Lafreniere; which should be to say no major issues at all.

I refuse to believe they'll genuinely take Entwistle over Alexis.

I don't want to believe it but the way they have been playing him and not really giving him an actual line....Yeah it looks to me like he is going home.

Well, having him play in the spot where Vilardi will be playing once he's clear certainly doesn't inspire any confidence he'll be sticking around.

This decision could turn out to seriously bite them in the ass if the team manages to struggle offensively.

It is one of those moves where you say....Okay, you better win the thing now. Because if they don't then it turns on them pretty quickly. I didn't really start this out with any confidence in Hunter carrying on for Ducharme, and well nothing so far has helped me gain confidence.

Taking Entwhistle would just be so stupid if Anderson-Dolan is healthy you make the 4th line Bowers- JDA- Studnicka which would be an excellent 4th line. Entwhistle would just be redundant. Even if Lafreniere is just the 13th forward they should keep him because you never know when having that kind of talent could become important.

I'm not surprised. I said it months ago, Hockey Canada makes a habit of leaving talented 17 year olds at home. My advice to young Alexis, score a hatty against the Swiss tomorrow. Even that may not be enough. I think their minds are made up.

Really hoping they don't cut Lafreniere or another stud offensive player. What bothers me is that Canada's team is still good no matter the roster choices they make, so when they make awful picks and still end up winning the tournament, they point to those inferior "role" players and go forward believing they are the reason they won. Nothing I would love to see more than 4 equal scoring lines with the 12 best forwards in the country who will keep the puck in the other team's zone. What's the point of having one shutdown line? To me, it defies logic. If you thought putting good defensive players together was the key to success wouldn't you do the same for all 4 lines? Some guys may be good defensively sure, but what good is it if they are in their own zone the entire time?
