I’m surprised to read that about Makar. The general consensus from the showcase was that he looked surprisingly big.

The defence is ridiculous this year, one of the better groups i've seen in many years. Extremely mobile, good puck skills throughout, high IQ. Goaltending has the potential to be one of the best tandems this decade too, although DiPi and Hart can play small in the net at times.

The forward group is lacking that dominant offensive force but otherwise this looks like a solid group
He might not have the high first rounder pedigree, but Kyrou is that guy. He’s been absolutely dominant in every game I’ve seen and single-handedly made Sarnia into one of the top threats in the OHL. He demands the puck, is the guy that can go end to end and be the clutch shooting/passing threat on the PP, and can slow down/speed up the game at will. Put him with some high quality linemates who can play off him, and watch out. I dont understand how people are sleeping on this guy.

I think for the forwards it's all going to come down to chemistry. They have enough firepower throughout the lineup but the coaching staff needs to put the right guys next to each other.

For Makar, I think he is the type that will look better in an actual game situation, like he did in the summer showcase. He wasn't small or anything but he seems to have a short stick which limits his range and makes his gap that much more important. Most of the practice was cycling and breakout but they did some PP and PK work near the end where he looked better. I still fully expect him to shine in the exhibitions and be a key contributor at the competition.

From what I've seen/heard Avs brass was ok with sending Jost but it was up to him and he didnt want to(maybe something changes). As for defense I'm very worried HC will screw the defense up like with the forwards. Hoping for

Mete-Foote
Clague-Makar
Bean-Fabbro
Mahura

If they truly gave Jost the choice, maybe he didn't want to miss out on the $100k or so salary he'd collect for the three weeks on the NHL roster that the WJC runs.

Yeah, I don't think any player is going to turn that down and no agent is going to advise them to do so.

I can't believe how often people overlook this simple yet gigantic factor. Nobody loves the WJC more than me, but to miss a month of NHL cheques (when you are still new to getting them), is enough to make me say "Hey, my club team needs me and it's where I want to be."

scratches for tonight's game against @USPORTSca D: Fabbro, Timmins, Clague, Mete F: Steel, Kyrou, Dube, Thomas, Formenton

This to me tells me the above players are 100% making the team

I wouldn't take that as a guarantee that all made it (I think that Steel was scratched one game last year before being cut) but that is interesting. Particularly that Formenton is scratched.

I'm really interested tonight in a few players, namely Glass, Suzuki and Stanley.

Seriously underrating Colton Point. Point has had a superior year (than DiPietro) playing on a bad team in the NCAA against tougher competition.

I think that this is debatable, Windsor has a good record because of DiPietro, not because they are a good team. Not to take away anything from Point, because I know very little about him, but DiPietro has been very good this year behind a D core that has 4 first year players and 1 second year guy that played mostly forward in his rookie season. That said, if Point outplays him in camp, hope they take Point.

If a team “loans” a player to this tournament, like the Habs did with Mete, don’t they still get paid?

I would expect they get paid at either their AHL ($70k typically) or Juniors ($10k typically) rate.

Maybe teams can pay them NHL salary. Would love to see a definitive answer if anyone has one.

if Steel gets cut again I might riot. i really want to see him with some higher-end talent to see what his play making can really do
