The comments from Richards have had me thinking all day about how actually young this team is and how maybe in the off season signing an older player who can provide some type of leadership(while actually being able to contribute something on the ice) to a short contract wouldn't be such a terrible idea, instead of letting some of the UFA's go to have their spots filled by rookies.

They just traded for one of the best leaders and role models of the past decade. Hopefully he can have an impact similar to that of Tampa Bay.

I've been ripped apart on these boards in the past for suggesting Callahan's leadership was extremely overrated. I'm not really a talk surprised to hear this, though I am surprised for Richards to come out and say it. The fact that he did speak up and didn't really sugar coat it, to me suggests he really didn't think much of Cally as a captain.

Richards comments though make me think he's just about the last guy I'd want to give the C to.

Yeah, I honestly really liked the move, I'm just saying that right now we have (off the top of my head) 5 players age 30 and up on the roster and that it wouldn't be the worst idea to add a little more experience to the locker room, especially with the possibility of buying out richards in the summer

Dan Boyle. Fills a big need, and fits that role.

Yeah, I've been pretty vocal about not even liking Richards with an A most of the time. The veteran bit is overblown to me. Sure it's important to have veterans in the room and sure, I want guys who go out and lead by example by giving it their a all, but of my actual, designated leadership on my team, I'd like 2/3 of my Cs and As to actually be leaders that know how to speak up. It's one of the things I really miss about Dubi.

I have no problem with what richards said. He spoke to the truth. There was no animosity towards towards callahan. He acknowledged what cally brings to the table but he wasnt a vocal leader. And he also wasnt inferring he (richards) would be or was more vocal, just that there were other veterans in the room who were.

The simple truth is that Callahan wasn't worth what he was asking to the Rangers a week ago and he won't be worth it in three months.

I don't understand what is wrong with what Richards said. Seems pretty accurate and tame to me. Is he wrong that Callahan isn't a vocal leader? It's doesn't have to be an insult. Callahan is a guy who seems to lead by example.

Personally, I think Richards just gave an honest answer to a question. He didn't tear down Callahan in any way. Callahan was a leader by example and not a guy to give speeches. This is news? There are other leaders in that room - Staal, Girardi, Richards, St. Louis, etc... Of course he's going to spin it like the Rangers can go on without missing a beat. What's he supposed to say?

As far as Callahan - it could also just be posturing. Every, EVERY UFA wants the Ranger to be interested. It raises prices.

Eh, he spoke the truth. Looks like a non-issue,unless R.C. has some real thin skin. He said he did his leading on the ice. I would expect someone on the NYR to say they will survive without Ryan Callahan and keep on going without him. If they didn't think that, the season is already doomed and don't even bother playing.

I wonder if the concept of a captain just doesn't matter as much to the players, particularly player who have been in the league for a while, as it does to us fans...

I'm sure it matters a great deal to the players who are named (or not named) for captaincy. When it comes to leadership, the real leaders of the team will be the stronger personalities. Not necessarily those who are most vocal, but those who just by their charisma, credibility or prior accomplishments alone have the group listening when they talk. You don't get there by wearing a letter.

Maybe if wood chuck leads by example instead of just talking crap he might not get bought out next year. I really thought MSL playing here would give beav a boost but he is playing worse now than earlier in the season. Bye bye beav.

Richards should have gone to Florida to find the 'Fountain of Youth'. Callahan should have gone to college for an MBA in finance! :yo:

Callahan tonight, Goal, 4 SOG, + 1, 3rd star of the game

Since joining Tampa in 4 GP he has 4 points (1 G, 3 A), and is a + 3

I will maintain my stance that signing Callahan to a massive contract would have been a mistake, but Brad needs to shut his mouth.

Callahan is, deservedly so, beloved by this fan base. As a relatively younger fan, this is one of the toughest pills I have ever had to swallow, even though I felt it was for the good of the team moving forward.

However, to hear a guy all but criticize the way Cally lead and clearly allude to MSL as being a better leader (and he may well be) is disgusting. Add to that the fact that Richards has been overpaid and nothing but underwhelming in his tenure here.

I'm sick of his play and now, I'm just sick of him. Buy this ****er out the second it's allowed.

Also, regardless of Cally likely being an overrated captain by us, he was an original Ranger. He was here from our resurgence and was a leader on this team for years. You can't just "replace" that, even if you're bringing in Wayne Gretzky. Continuity is something that can't be bought. Longevity is something that can't be bought.

To act like any player can just come in, regardless of it being a future HOF'r in MSL, and can replace what Cally meant to this organization, it's fans and his teammates is ludicrous.

You would think with Richards being SUCH AN OLD VETERAN that he would understand this.

Go **** yourself Brad.

The problem with Richards' comments is the implication that older players (like Richards himself) somehow automatically have more clout in the locker room and don't need to be held accountable. Well guess what Brad, if Vignault has any sense your next captain is also going to be someone who is much younger than you are and doesn't have a championship yet. You're SC win in Tampa doesn't mean anything to me. Callahan is twice the player Richards is right now.

That Richards quote summed up the Rangers mentality during the dark ages - "Hey listen, I had lots of success years ago with other teams so lay off me now, I know what I'm doing." That may work with certain players who can still hold their own on the ice (Jagr, Selanne) but Richards really isn't a good player anymore. He's the 3rd best center on a team with awful centers. Shut your mouth and if someone like Callahan or McDonagh and Girardi tells you to do something you better do it because you're not "the guy" anymore.

The comments from Brad isnt a problem. He's not trashing anyone. Fair and honest comments.

That being said, the fact that those words were said by Brad Richards, a player with an A he absolutely does not deserve and shows absolutely no leadership and clutch on the ice in tight or hard games, is annoying. Brad is in no position to jugde leadership, as he himself is the worst case of leadership in this team.

Of course i dont know whats being said in the locker room, but my jugdement of leadership is from what i see on ice. On ice, Callahan is a leader grade A and Richards grade E.

Brad: Maybe you should stop talking to media about locker room leadership and start filling that on-ice leadership that disappeared with Dubi and Cally.

Buyout Richards
Give Staal the "C" and sign him to a reasonable 6 year deal
Make Girardi and McD "A":s
Homegrown on ice leadership
Have Nash and MSL provide veteran leadership from the outside - iow outside of wearing the letters
Bring on board a puckmoving D (You gotta think that is D Boyle in the world of Sather)
Let Stralman walk
Resign Zucc (4 years), Byron Boy (if under 2 M), Carcillo, D Moore
Resign Kreider, J Moore and Brassard to stopgap RFA deals
Bring up cheaper homegrown kids (Fast, Miller, Lindberg, Allen/McIllraith, Bourque??) to fill out the roster or sign a vet or two on stopgap UFA deals if Brass thinks they are not ready
Interesting new guy Haggerty they signed...
Stay away from Statsny
If we make a trade - trade for younger NHL ready assets that are an upgrade to our existing holes
Simple

It just irks me that this guy who's given us one decent season for his cap hit--who ****ing disappeared in the playoffs last year--deservingly scratched for the likes of Kris Newbury--comes back and more or less is having a mediocre season--(even if he's tied with Zucc and Stepan for the team in points) and thinks he needs to spout off about our former captain (who at least gave his all each and every shift even if he was way out of line on the $'s he thought he deserved). Brad's head wasn't in the game last year at crunch time in the playoffs. Now he has **** to tell us about leadership. The only thing Brad has to do is prove he's worthy of his own cap $'s on the ice and personally I think there is little chance of that ever happening. I at least saw Ryan Callahan giving his all on the ice for several years. I can't say as much about Brad Richards.

Totally agree. Richards seems to be back to skating like he has a ball and chain attached to him.

And that instant Richards/St Louis chemistry so many people promised in the St Louis trade thread? Yeah, not quite so instant.

How is Callahan a 3rd liner, some people say this, yet the pro people say and not fans, say he is a 2nd line forward. No one has really given an explanation to why he is a 3rd liner, when he is now playing on the 2nd line in Tampa, and they knew before he got there he would be on one of their top lines, :shakehead

He is a 3rd liner on this team because he does not displace Nash or MSL on the right side. Its as simple as that.
