If Richards feels that Cally should have been more vocal he could've brought it up to him when he was here, or have been more vocal HIMSELF. He wears an A and is one of the more experienced players on the team.

It's always easier to point fingers than to look in the mirror.

Addendum: I thought Richards was known for his calm demeanor and cerebral approach to the game (?).

My guess is that if Cally is brought back, Richards knows it will be at his expense. Mike Gillis threw Torts under the bus recently because he had to do distance himself from the tire fire that Vancouver has turned into.

Considering Callahan earned the captaincy the way he did for this organization, Richards' comments do nothing to endear him in any sense, and I am probably one of the few Richards supporters here.

With that said he has the stretch run to prove his worth and back up his words. I still don't think this team has a chance against Boston or any physical team given the way its constructed, so Richards will have his hands full in rallying the troops... if that Carolina game was an example of the leadership this currently team has, and the sense of urgency that they play with, the guys might as start booking their vacations in mid-April.

Honestly, I was leaning towards keeping him...but now..

buyout it uppp

Where did he say that? Talk about reading into something that's not there.

Richards says Callahan wasn't overly vocal in the locker room, and that his departure didn't change that dynamic because there are other veteran guys that do that already.

How is that a knock on Callahan? He never said it was good or bad, just that's how Callahan was as a captain.

who didn't? Are we supposed to hear good things about our coach that was fired? I didn't see richards calling out dubinsky or stepan about contracts or gaborik getting traded (probably) due to torts reasons.

You're not supposed to hear anything about the fired coach. And I dare Richards to comment on anyone's contract. Personal accountability Brad.

And why does anyone care what Richards (or anyone on the Rangers) thinks about Callahan anymore?

Callahan isn't a ranger anymore, I wouldn't care if AV or Sather came out today and said he flat out sucked this year, because that's 100% true.

Get over this "he bled for this team" rhetoric. It's a business, and he was doing it for a paycheck.

Seemingly strange thing of Beaver to say, if the quote is accurate and not taken out of context. ah well.

Personally, i hope that Cally is not brought back. I dont care if he offers himself at 4 or 5 mill (well.. sure, at 4 i'd take it), he is massively overpaid as it is (and if anyone bites in the summer, he will be ludicrously overpaid). The Rangers have a list of names that arnt in very high standing, with the likes of Drury, Gomez, Redden, etc (guess we can add Richie to it also ?).. but please lets not add Cally to it a couple of years down the road..

Makes sense; you and I seem to agree on a lot.

Hey look several pages of people blowing this out of proportion and trying to judge someone based on 4 sentences taken out of context. Could it have been worse then it appears? Of course. Could it be a lot less harmless then it appears? Of course. Is judging Brad Richards based on what your friends wife said of him when she met him the most ridiculous thing i will read on the internet today? So far it is but probably wont last.

Bringing Callahan back makes sense if the guy we got for him was a C or LW.

Even if you bring back Callahan at 5-6M, he is a 3rd liner RW; not by skill, but by depth chart. You cant give that kind of money to a 3rd line slot.

agree with you 100%

No problem with what Richards said. It might be as simple as acknowledging that the locker room is still shocked and needing to wake them up that there's plenty of good leadership here.

Also have no problem taking it to the media, there's certainly a narrative running that this team's being outworked and we just lost our hard working captain.

How is Callahan a 3rd liner, some people say this, yet the pro people say and not fans, say he is a 2nd line forward. No one has really given an explanation to why he is a 3rd liner, when he is now playing on the 2nd line in Tampa, and they knew before he got there he would be on one of their top lines, :shakehead

he's a 2nd liner on tampa because they dont have depth on RW. the skill set he has does not make him a consistent 60-65 point scorer which is what a second line player should be. callahan is more suited to be a 3rd line winger because of the grinding style he plays.

those types of players should not make the money he wants.

richards comments just confirmed what i thought about callahan. he was a leetch type captain. lead by example on the ice, but he wasn't a good motivator in the room. glad he made them and i'm glad we're moving on without callahan as our captain

Sorry that does not make sense, a 60+ scorer is a top liner. A 2nd liner will score anyhere from 45 points to 55 points. A 3rd liner usually plays under 15 mins in a game. Callahan plays over 15 mins, and a lot of times over 20 mins.

As per the motivator thing. I would not put too much stock into what Richards said

There's really no room for him here for the kind of price he's asking for. 5 - 6 mill for an RW who will likely play behind Nash and Zucc? Doesn't make sense. Maybe if one of them could switch wings, but even then, I don't see how the cap could possibly work.

I don't think Cally was the best ever or a disappointment - he was a very good player who rose up the ranks through sheer hard work. He was an entertaining player, and a prototypical example of the era of Ranger hockey that he represented. But, he's gone now and he's not coming back. It is what it is. Listening to his interview, it's kinda crazy to hear him say that he never thought he'd be traded or would leave in FA. Why demand such absurd numbers then?

As for the Richards comments, I don't put too much stock into them. I see a veteran player trying to downplay the loss of the captain more than anything. Probably could have been worded better, but it's not a huge deal.

Even if you don't like Richards' opinion, we should be appreciative of the insight he's given us. We have absolutely no insight into the locker room. When we hear something it's almost always just a rumor that no one here has the power to verify. It could just be Richards' opinion, but it could also be a minority, or even populous opinion. We know that at least one player didn't feel Callahan was experienced and vocal enough, and that one player felt comfortable enough to just come out and say it to the media, so could that mean he doesn't anticipate backlash over this since he feels many, or even most Rangers would agree with him?

This is the same Richards that showed up out of shape and was a healthy scratch in the playoffs last year talking about leadership?

You'd expect Callahan to say what he said there. What Richards had to say, on the other hand...now that was interesting.

I just think this is more of a call it like it is type of statement.

What does he really say? Was Cally a factor in the locker-room? Yes.

Was he this dominant prescence that leaves a major hole after him? No.

Was anyone expecting anything else?

This.

The expectations of a "second Liner" are ridiculous with some people on here. He's a clear second liner and a good one at that. I'd like him back but we now have Nash, St. Louis, and Zuccarello at RW. Too much shifting would be needed to fit him back here unless he comes on a decent contract.

As for what Richards said, he basically confirmed what many people speculated and is being overblown. Its not as negative as people are trying to spin

it doesnt make sense? how is a 60 plus scorer a top liner on a good team? we're talking a good team, not a mediocre team that cant score. if you're expecting only 60 points a piece out of your 1st liners, you won't be scoring many goals. to be productive in this league a 2nd line needs to have 60 points.

callahan plays over 15 minutes because he's on every PK and because of the lack of depth, played PP also.

how many minutes did he play 5 on 5 here?
