News Article: Callahan leaves door open to return to Rangers / Richards Speaks Out

Those comments are not shocking at all and exactly what needed to be said regarding all this tripe that the lockeroom wouldn't recover from a Callahan trade. It's what you would expect from anyone not looking at the situation from a biased fan perspective. I agree with him 100%. Callahan was a lead on the ice kind of player and the lockeroom aspect was being blown completely out of proportion. Of course now people will attack Richards for telling it how it is. Lol.

Not with the Rangers. Richards has accomplished nothing with the Rangers.
 
Kind of surprising for BR to say.

So now he's had a hand in getting rid of a coach and a captain?

Maybe he can work on the GM now?

Not bad for a guy who won't be here for long.

Callahan started from the bottom of this organization and worked his way up to being Captain of this team, he has bled for this team, worked hard, and over a NTC gets traded..yes it was not the money, but a NTC. But this is a business and I understand it, and so does Cally, and for the right price he could very well be back next season since he knows this is a business and does not take it personal.
 
I'd love to have Cally back. If he does come back, it would be Richards' or someone else's expense.

Richards comments weren't bad, but we all know by now that he has a little of the diarrhea of the mouth when it comes to long answers. What Richards said in more words than necessary were that there isn't a shortage of leadership in the room, and guys will be vocal when they have to be.

With that said Richie, those words better ring true, because a veteran laden team just came out with a **** effort in a winnable hockey game. That shows a shortage in leadership if the team can't get up for a game at this stage of the season.

Of course he has this right. But via the media, trashing (yes, I'm exaggerating a bit) a former teammate?
 
Didn't expect that from Richards. Those comments are simply unnecessary. It almost sounds like he thinks the Rangers would be bringing back either him or Callahan -- and that pointing out Callahan's flaws will make Richards a keeper. I hope that's not the case. I'd like to think No. 19, with all the wisdom of a veteran, is smarter than that. More importantly, I'd like to have Callahan back, but for no more than $6MM p/y.
 
Did it ever occur to anyone maybe Richards was sick of answering questions about Callahan's leadership and contributions to the team? Who knows how many times since the trade he has been asked about it. That's the kind of reactionary response you would expect if that were the case.
 
Richards had 3 options while Callahan was here, if he has been unhappy with Callahan's leadership.
a) tell Callahan in person. Approach him in a good spirit, Callahan would have to be an idiot to turn down his advise.
b) if Callahan doesn't change his stance, tell the coach to ask him to be a bit more vocal.
c) IF and only IF a) and b) fail and he felt that a louder captain would spark the team: talk to the media.

He did option d): Wait until Callahan leaves town and throw a hissy fit via media. To me, that's not okay.

Richards should be bought out, this is a business and it is too much Cap money to lay on the line for 6 years. They have to use the buy out option this summer, or it's gone and they will be stuck with Richards since he has a NTC in his contract. He is playing as a shell of himself now, imagine in a few years?

No one was suggesting that.
But leadership can be learned, at least to some extent. Imagine the following situation. You're a young manager of a large company. You worked you're way up to your position. Now, after the first meeting, a chairman, who's much more experienced than you approaches you, and tells you he thinks you're being to soft with other chairmen/executives, who haven't been quite up to the task. He asks you to change your stance a bit. You'd be an absolute idiot if you don't even consider what he advises.

Richards can say whatever he wants but he is coming off as a hypocrite here. It's not exactly like his leadership has been so amazing in NY - he's a big part of that leadership group as well and unfortunately is one of the players on the team that happens to be playing some uninspiring hockey. I actually agree with his assessment of Cally but I wish Richards was a little more self-aware.
 
Good riddance to Callahan. Richards should be shown the door this summer. The Rangers don't need another big money right winger on this team. Another smallish winger. The Rangers have enough small players. The Rangers need to move on.

Options a), b) and c) are what a consummate professional would do, and what I'd expect from a veteran. A leader isn't the player who yells the loudest. A leader engages his surroundings; he makes the team's troubles / successes his own; he thinks team-first before speaking or acting. Richards, moreover, is not playing on the pond with his buddies in PEI; he's not a teenager. He's a member of NYR. He's an employee -- and employees are expected to behave a certain way. Really disappointing reaction from Richards.

Addendum: I thought Richards was known for his calm demeanor and cerebral approach to the game (?).

I actually agree with this but I don't think Richards is one to talk. That is my issue with him saying it.
 
If he wants to show how overrated Callahan's leadership abilities were, do it on the ice, not verbally. We're what, 3-3-1 since the Olympics?

If Richards feels that Cally should have been more vocal he could've brought it up to him when he was here, or have been more vocal HIMSELF. He wears an A and is one of the more experienced players on the team.

Some of us were saying that all along.

He was a lead-by-example on the ice. Just like Leetch. But there's more to Captaincy than sacrificing your body or scoring goals.
 
maybe I'm not reading it the way teh rest of you guys are.

What did Richards say that was so bad?

Are there no other leaders in the room capable of stepping up? Of course there are.

As for keeping the door open, he would be dumb with a capital dumb to shut the door on one of the richest franchises in the NHL.

Just like 99% of Free Agents in MLB. Even if they have 1000% NO DESIRE TO BE A YANKEE will never publically shut them out. Keeping the Yankees in the discussion ensures that everyone else will pony up that extra lil bit.

Rangers being one of the richest franchises in the game and a history of spending stupidly has to remain in the mix as a potential destination.

I'd take him back.

5x5 tops.
