According to the Marlies' coach he still has to work on his play away from the puck:

“To me he’s had a very productive time here which is important, we always want to make sure he’s having a productive time here,†said Marlies coach Sheldon Keefe. “The early going has been great. He’s made progress, in the early going it’s far from perfect, especially away from the puck. He’s gotten better in that area and he continues to work at it.â€

Keefe, Dubas, and Shanahan seem to be all on the same page of where Nylander's development is at the moment. He's getting there, but he is still a work in progress to being NHL ready.

“We, at different times, kept him on the ice for defensive-zone faceoffs where normally I probably wouldn’t in that case or the other team has a real hard matchup against him and we won’t take a lot of effort into trying to get away from it,†said Keefe. “We’ll just make him play through it. I think he’s the guy that needs to be pushed the most so we’ve been able to do that.â€

I think you're confusing "being NHL ready" and "being a well-rounded top 6 NHL center".

We covered that yesterday already. The goal for Nylander is to be a top 6 player in the NHL. Just like other young players are showing they are this year. Anything less, then he is not ready.

Did Sam Bennett play in the Flames top 6 last year? What about David Pastrnak? Or Bo Horvat? What line is Daniel Sprong playing on this year?

I remember Seguin playing a lot on the Bruins 4th line too.

Different teams have different development strategies. The Leafs want Nylander to fully cook on the mikes, while other teams let their guys learn on the fly in the NHL.

Being on the Marlies should've seen as a slight against Nander.

My two goals for Nylander this regular season

- Lead Marlies to a 1st place finish
- Finish with around 70 games played, 70 points and 35 goals

So far so good.

Just like to point out that they have a better roster than the leafs making them harder to earn minutes. I mean just compare the forward group, it should be easier to make the leafs than the penguins, bruins, flames.

But I do agree that Nylander looked NHL ready but the leafs decided his development in the AHL would benefit him more than his development in the NHL this year.

No one said he was perfect away from the puck. There's a difference between saying he's NHL calibre and saying he's perfect. Dubas said he wanted him to be an elite two way player. If that's the mindset than yes, he's pretty far from a Toews, Kopitar, Bergeron type defensively.

Dubas:
We’re trying to develop him into a very high-end NHL two-way center here.

Just so we're clear, they are trying to develop Nylander into a very high-end NHL two way centre. Not just a top 6 player which tbh, he already is.

You realize he has never played an NHL game yet right?

I'm pretty sure Atomos and many others have seen enough of Nylander to know he's a top six forward on this leafs team, easily.

He was probably their best forward at pre-season as well.

You didnt answer the question. You realize hes never played an NHL game before. You cant assume him to ALREADY be a top 6 forward at the NHL level no matter how many pairs of rose colored glasses you have on.

This is the main board. Not the Leafs board. Out here we dont wear rose colored glasses.

Well, im telling you he is good enough to be on the top 6 on the leafs.

Okay? Don't get all worked up over it lol.

Good.

Actually you can based on player and league equivalencies.

If you cannot comprehend making comparisons between leagues and projecting prospects based on how they've done in a large sample size of AHL and SHL league games, maybe you need to do some more reading.

won't insert Nylander into the lineup until he's a top 6 player according to some

Nylander isn't a top 6 forward while he hasn't played any NHL games according to others.

I guess he's never gonna make the NHL then. Can't play until he's a top 6 forward and can't be a top 6 forward until he plays. How unlucky for Nylander.

With that logic you couldn't have assumed McDavid, or Eichel, or other top prospects to be top 6 before playing in the NHL.

The main board is where people try to say they know things about stuff that they don't actually know.

no nhl rookie rookie is a well rounded top 6 nhler
certainly not, eichel, larkin and ehlers those guys are making rookie mistakes often
and thats fine and they're still in the nhl, so dont give me that bs nylander has to be a well rounded player top 6 players like the others, you clearly arent watching them cause they arent well rounded for ****( still amazing amazing players and young)
maybe mcdavid is the on well rounded top 6 but hes injured so yeah

Ducking the weirdness, it is nice to see the progress Nylander is making.

Doing a good job bringing points while also working hard on his all around game. The progress he makes this year will definitely be key to having a good year in the NHL next season.

In the end not a bad move to let him have a successful Marlies season.

Lol. Well played

Oh yes I ****ing can. Just like I ****ing called McDavid the Oilers top center before he had played an NHL game, and guess what, I was right, as I almost always am.

You can take a meek "let's just wait and see" approach all you want, but don't expect other people to be so timid in their evaluations. It doesn't even take a lot of balls or experience projecting prospects to call that Nylander would be a top six forward on most teams in the NHL, and certainly the Leafs, right now. It's just obvious, to the point where only the most docile of analysts would defer judgement.

Confidence, my friend, is what it takes to accomplish **** in this world, and you seem to be lacking it in this post. Step up your game!

OK, to be semantically precise, Nylander is a top flight prospect rather rather than an established NHL top six player. I feel pretty sure, however, that a lot of NHL GM's would trade some of their established top six players for Nylander in a New York minute. But the Leafs would say no. Or simply hang up.

Is he a top 6 NHL forward? No, because like you said he's clearly never played the position before at the NHL level.

That said it's really not a stretch to say that from what we've seen from him at the AHL and SHL level that he could quite easily step into a top 6 role on the Leafs and hold his own. That has nothing to do with rose-coloured glasses lol.
