Its season 2 of the leafs rebuild. We are not even half waY thru the Shana plan. Which is ahead of itself but no where near complete. 3 more drafts to go

So Nylander marner nad mathews cam be complemented
But in 2017 its Rielly who gets help on the d imo

He's off to a great start, but let's not get carried away. He's been a pretty streaky player to date, and would not be surprised to see him have a few rough stretches like most rookies. His production so far has been heavily reliant on PP (Leafs are 24% on PP and he's got a point on all 6 PP goals they've scored - neither of those is sustainable.)

As a result of the above, I could definitely see him falling below 60 points. I expected ~50 points before the season started, and wouldn't be at all surprised if he scores near that pace for his final 74 gp. That would give him ~55 points on the season, which is pretty realistic IMO. I'd be very surprised if he broke 70 points.

If his name would be McNylander, you or media would not wait with calling him superstar and beyond. But sure it is not wrong to wait with the biggest superlatives. But what is importent is that it is not just the points. You can get impressive PPG without playing so good if the sample size is just a few games, but he has dominate the games.

He create a lot of chances in 5v5, so that many points comes in PP should not be a concern by itself.

Either way, i am pretty sure he will beat his rekord from last year at least.;)

Watching Nylander as a Nucks fan really stings. He's exactly what we need right now and was right there for the taking :cry:

Benning:rant:

How? He's been a PPG player since entering the NHL.

Nylander has points in 7 of 9 games this year.

McDavid has points in 6 of 9 games this year.

#LessStreakyThanMcDavid

In hindsight Nylander should have been on Sweden's World Cup roster. Was he even in the discussion at the time though?

Probably not. It's funny because only 3 out of the top 11 Swedish scorers this season were invited to the WC, and Hörnqvist is the only forward.

In Dec 2013, Nylander was a lock for the top-3 and had tons of 1st overall hype. Still remember draft day, we were so lucky. I never thought he'd get past VAN.

11 points in 9 games. But he didn't block a shot in a regular game in October, i call bust, kid lacks the character to play in the NHL...

I always thought William was better suited on the wing rather than the center position. Which has reflected in his overall play. He looks far more involved this year. Much more comfortable on the wing. Good on him. This is looking like one of former amateur Head Scout Dave Morrison's better picks.

Nylander is the true star out of Marner and he (and that's no slight to Marner).

The Leafs young forwards cause extreme envy.

That's hard to say for sure at this point. Nylander had a much more conventional route to the NHL (Pro in Swe, AHL, then NHL). It'd be nice if Marner could have played AHL last year or start there this year, but he doesn't look out of place anyway.

Give Marner 2-3 years to really compare the two. Either way, extremely good duo to have!

Nylander is playing with another elite prospect and another fast rookie on the line. Marner is playing with 2 players that have half his hockey IQ and half his speed. Can't really judge marner vs nylander right now until marner gets better line mates. I think a marner / nylander line would be absolutely deadly offensively and decent defensively.

Nylander is playing with 2 other rookies. No matter the talent those guys have seen about 30 NHL games combined.
Marner has a proven 60pt player and a defensively responsible 50 pt center whos good at faceoffs.

JvR and Bozak have shown nothing so far. They are wildly inconsistent.

I don't really care much for comparisons because they both play for the same team and have elite talent.

It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. Just last year people were down on Nylander because Ehlers/Fabbri/Larkin put up 30-45 points while Nylander was tearing up the AHL.

I would love to see Marner and Nylander together. You would have to play Nylander at C/LW and alternate between him and Matthews at C/LW. Marner would be less effective on the LW than Nylander or Matthews because they have better shots.
So Nylander/Matthews-Nylander/Matthews-Marner :yo:

If you mean Bozak, I think most would agree he's the worst center defensively that the leafs have.

He's also never hit 50 points in his career

I made this point in the Sweden thread before the tournament. Said he would add some much needed creativity to the Swedish forwards, despite having little NHL experience. One guy agreed with me, but I was mostly laughed at iirc.

The one thing I dislike about all of this is that with all the hype, there is an expectation growing here for guys like him and Matthews. We all see their potential to be PPG players and it's going to become expected or he will forever be seen as a dissapointment.

It's already starting with Rielly. Around the board people are tearing this kid apart for not carrying the Leafs blue line. As soon as he has a cold streak, the fans and media will be out for blood, mostly due to Saltiness of having him rammed down their throat when he was good.

If Nylander and co can overcome this, they can be stars in Toronto. It's a unique challenge players face only here and a few other cities in the NHL.

Marner plays with Bozak, not Kadri.
