Last night Marner was put on a line with Kadri and Komarov, and finished the game there. Don't know if it will stick, but Bozak hasn't proved himself worthy of playing with Marner.

Bozak seems to luck into good wingers frequently. Probably cause he can't be tasked with facing hard match-ups since he gets eaten alive in those, so sheltered offensive roles are more suitable for him.

Didn't Shanahan push for Nylander? I recall reading how impressed he was with Nylander in their interviews.

Anyone who continues to act like an infant, and passive aggressively (and not so subtly) attack other posters will get a thread ban and an infraction. Perhaps more.

You're not being clever.

It was Shanahan listening to Bergman. Shanahan hadn't been on long enough to really know Nylander at that point but it definitely wasn't a Nonis pick lol
I recall Shanny saying that he had spent a lot of time with William, had dinner etc. and that he liked him and also knew what kind of guy his father was. Agree that it wasn't a Nonis pick, but I do think Shanny had a lot of influence despite being pretty fresh.

Coming into this season i honestly thought Nylander is going to be one of those prospects we forget because of marner and Matthews but dam! the guy seems much better than he was last year and the way he plays with the puck and finds those plays to make those awesome passes! i actually won't be surprised if he will become a better player than marner and matthews 4 years from now... Right now he's been by far the better of them 3!!!!

Shoutout to NYI, Vancouver and Carolina management teams for letting us have Nylander. We dearly thank you.

Willy looked amazing at the end of last year. I knew he'd kill it this year. Maybe not this well. But I was expecting 60 points from him. Wherever Nylander goes he lights it up the NHL won't be any different for him.

Ouch. Canucks could have and should have drafted the Nylander brothers to replace the Sedins. That would've been cool

I recall it this way. Shanahan instructed his scouts to focus on drafting skill with this pick. Morrison and his scouts were debating Ehlers or Nylander at the draft table if one recalls the animated discussion. I don't think the Leafs expected Ehlers would be there when they picked. If Shanahan had any input in the pick it was this. A directive on skill. Something that Morrison has done in the past with the Rielly pick. Leafs could have gone either way in skill in those players and wouldn't have been terribly wrong imo. They settled on Nylander which is looking good early on. If he can keep it up, then Leafs will have done very well with this pick.

Ehlers was just as likely to be there as Nylander. It seems pretty clear the guy they wanted was Willy, and were contemplating trading down for Larkin if Nylander was gone. Ehlers may have been a backup play at 8, but I don't think the debate at the table was about who to pick, it was whether to trade down or not. The list is already well debated and established at that point, you don't get into draft floor debates over who to pick at 8, that has been solved awhile ago.

I remember hearing this just before the draft and I was hoping for Nylander or Ehlers, either guy I was completely happy with.

When Virtanen was taken I was happy to know that one of Ehlers or Nylander would fall to the leafs, when Fleury was taken I was so happy that either guy was still there, just hoping he Leafs would take one of them.

When the Leafs picked Nylander I was happy, very happy. When Ehlers was taken with the next pick I was happy for the Jets as well.
I used to travel to Winnipeg for work every second week, and made some good friends and have colleagues still there so I have a soft spot for the Jets.

Nylander has been the best Leaf this season, and his play in the least 3-4 games has been outstanding.
Perfect compliment to Matthews
