C/W Marat Khusnutdinov (2020, 37th, MIN)

Still, it's about Khusnutdinov, and I personally doubt, he's good enough even for a 2nd round pick.

I mean, NA people are kinda weird. They couldn't find any round pick for Panarin, who was already a solid KHLer at the same age as Khusnutdinov. They couldn't find any better pick, than a 5th rounder, for Kaprizov, who at the same age played on the 1st line of the KHL team (even if it was the poorest and weakest one), and now they consider Khusnutdinov good enough for a high 2nd rounder at least.

Yeah, he's an elite skater, but all other his skills aren't even good enough to tear up the MHL.

This is misleading as Panarin wasn't even on the national team until his d+1 year and Karprizov wasn't exactly a star on the national team either.

There is alot of hindsight is 20-20 going on with those 2 guys.

I also think the Russian factor of not trusting if players wanted to come over has lessened as well.

Khusnutdinov also has a great 3rd line floor and is a center as the other 2 were more boom or bust wingers.

Kozlov was very good, but he was never considered better, than Bure. And Bure wasn't as good as Michkov at 15.

True but we should be more concerned how guys are closer to their draft years and Bure was exceptional in his age 17 season.

I would go as far as to say he was generational in that year.

Michkov is exciting and tracking to be in that area as well and I'm looking forward to watch his progress

I disagree with this. He needs to add a lot of strength before he's an NHL player. He certainly has the skills to get there, but he is very raw. I could also see the strength/size aspect keeping him from playing center in the pros. Too soon to say one way or another at this point, but I disagree that his floor is an NHL third liner, and I disagree that he's a surefire NHL center.

What you say can be applied to literally almost all of the players taken in the 2nd round and most of the 1st rounders as well.

His motor and 200 foot game is already elite for his age.

Just because it applies to a lot of other prospects as well doesn't mean you disregard it. The kid is 5'9 and spends more time on his butt than any other player I've seen, and he's in the MHL. He has a long way to go before he is what you think he is.

We are going to agree to disagree here as he has already performed quite well in best on best international tournaments and his d+1 season is going very well.

When do we expect him to come over to NA? I think he has one more year after this season on his current contract with SKA, will he stay in Russia for a few more seasons like Kaprizov did? Or has he given any indication that he wants to come over asap even if that means playing in the minors for a season or two?

Said he can’t wait to come over when his contract is up. He’s got this year and next in Russia, then probably AHL.

I don’t know why anyone would ever want him to step foot in the AHL.

Well most smaller players in their D+3 years need some time to adjust to the pro game and the AHL is as close to the NHL as any league in the world.

If he wants to come to NA then (which is what was referenced in the post I was responding to) it makes sense to have an adjustment period in the AHL.

But who knows a lot can happen in basically 2 years not all prospects develop at the same rate.

The top KHL players don't need an adjustment period in the AHL. KHL is the better league. The ice surfaces in the KHL are more and more becoming the size of NA ice. There's an off-ice adjustment, but there's no reason that needs to be done in the AHL as opposed to the NHL.

Which Marat is not...

I really wonder how much playing time he will get next year in the KHL as this year it seems like it will be minimal but time will tell.

I really like him as a player and think that Minny did very well getting him and Rossi.

MN's AHL team is close by in Iowa. Marat can come up for a few games, get a taste, then go back to Iowa and work on what he has to to make himself a permanent NHL'er. It is not unheard of for a player to do this multiple times before he makes it. That can never happen with a KHL player due to distance and contract logistics.

As for the KHL being better than the AHL? That's just an opinion, not fact.
