Prospect Info: C/W Jiri Kulich, 28th Overall, 2022 NHL Draft; Recalled 11/15/2024

His summer skills focus about getting to the net and staying at the net with Radek Duda has paid off in spades. He's the only forward they have who is consistently around the net and trying to establish himself there without fly-bys. Full marks to Kulich for taking it on and wanting to do what's necessary, using the coaching.

Duda himself says that one of Kulich's best qualities is his coachability -

I would say Benson as well but yeah

I think it's the knack for scoring goals that we expected from VO. Idk, it's like comparing Satan and Vanek. Apples and oranges but the comparison exists.
VO was great at scoring goals until opposing teams started to key on him and exposed the fact that that lethal shot from the circle is the only NHL-relevant portion of his game. Try to knock him off the puck and he gets knocked off the puck, each and every time. Don’t let him get the one-timer and that’s that for his effectiveness.

Cozens *could* be that guy, I think.
But he's busy on the second line and he's finding chemistry with Peterka and Quinn again. We need someone to replace Greenway. Maybe a guy like Crouse would be ideal, or someone like that, physical.

That would be nice, but I don’t know that they should be experimenting with it this season. That would mean either McLeod is playing 2C and that’s our 3rd line, or Kulich is being pushed into the 2C role in his rookie season, neither of which sounds great to me.

I am interested to see Ostlund’s development also.
He needs to develop an extra half a person in body mass. It was always going to be a slow one…but injuries are only setting it back.

Kulich has a man’s frame and the talent and drive to play in the NHL now. But, and this is where they love to screw up, he should be allowed to work on the third line for the rest of his ELC. Not thrown in the top six for good because you don’t want to pay someone. Not a fill in for the top line who scores enough to justify playing him there instead of acquiring a proven player. Kulich has special traits…and can be a star in this league imo. They haven’t even used his PP gifts yet. But you have to let him figure all that out. Not throwing him above his experience because you don’t have options. He and Benson should be 2/3rds of the 3rd line with a quality veteran riding with them next year. Those two are less expendable to me than the other three youngish forwards in the top six because we haven’t upheaved their development yet to save money. So don’t do that.

Completely possible if the Sabres do the right things (big IF) that eventually Kulich and Benson are the "1st line" and Tage and Tuch with a little grey in their beards are the "2nd line".

Question is - is dropping McLeod to 4C the best use of his skillset?

Also - I think Lawson Crouse would be the perfect complement for Benson/Kulich.

What is your opinion on what to do with Rosen?

I wasn’t joking when I said they should draw a line of every pro player they have under 24 and pick half of them to build around and trade the other half. From Helenius to Cozens. Pick half. Trade the other half for people who will help the half you picked. You aren’t doing any of them any favors the way you are doing it now. Yes, you’ll trade some good young talent that might go on to great things. No, you aren’t helping them do that here surrounded by slightly different versions of themselves. Kulich is in the half I’m keeping. Benson has been there since he was drafted.
