I’m starting to question if he should play another year.

If he leads the country in points (he’s close to it), what’s the point? You can say he should come back for the World Juniors, but he had 10 points there and won Gold this year.

He probably should wait another year, but these next three months he might earn his way onto the NHL roster before the end of the season.

He absolutely should stay at BC for another year. He needs to get stronger and work on his defensive game.

That can happen at a higher level. If he's beyond NCAA, sign him and then see where he fits. Could be AHL and could be NHL. He'd even be able to play World Juniors in the AHL.

If you lead the country in points as a freshman (a hypothetical), you probably should find a higher level for next season, whether you have things to get better on or not.

He's still making lots of mistakes. As good of a weekend as he had, I'd say he also made the most noticeable gaffes of the three freshmen. Some bad passes, weak possession, etc. New York can afford to be patient with him and he still has things to work on, no reason to rush him out of school just yet.

Leonard was actually the weakest overall, by far in the 1 and half of the games i saw. Gabe made one bad turnover. Gabe and Smith carried the offense. All three need to stay another year, none of them are NHL ready.

I can’t wait until the 3 of them go pro. It’ll be our first chance to see them not playing wih each other. Does 1 of them make it easier for the other 2 to be noticed?

All 3 are awesome prospects, but I’m genuinely curious how they’ll look when they don’t have this insane chemistry anymore.

I would agree that Leonard had the weakest weekend in that he didn't have many plus plays, I just think Perrault made, numerically, the most clear errors from what I saw. He also had a lot of good plays that made up for it. The point being that I think he still has developing to do and shouldn't be rushed to the pros just yet.

Agreed 100%.

I literally see no reason for him to go pro next season. Let him keep fine tuning his game before the jump.

Points shouldn't be the only reason that a guy goes pro. I think Perreault could use another year. His play away from the puck has improved a lot since the first weekend, but could still use some more work. Another offseason of strength training. I think Smith, Leonard and Perreault all should play another year.

Out of curiosity how that line compares to previous lines at the NCAA level.
There’s been some pretty insane lines in NCAA history. Just at BC alone, the Gaudreau, Hayes and Arnold line was insane from a production standpoint, I think they put up close to 200 points between the 3 of them. There’s been some others at BC that did some crazy stuff too. Also going back further, the Maine line of Kariya, Montgomery, Ingraham line was wild. I know Michigan and North Dakota have had some crazy ones too

Not to mention, I don't know that playing in a bottom 6 role in the NHL really does his development any good. That's setting him up for failure. With the type of player he is, if he succeeds at the NHL level, it's going to be as a setup man in the top 6, playing with other skilled players.

Is he going to beat out Lafreniere or Kakko next year for a top 6 wing spot? I think that's a very tall order. I don't know that going to a sandpaper league like the AHL would really be much better than the NCAA, either.

Kakko has 3 points in 21 games.

I watched the 7-1 blowout of Providence mostly for Cutter Gauthier. I thought Perreault, while being the highest energy of the big name prospects on the team was by far the sloppiest with the puck. Small sample but still, the kid needs work.

Off the train of he should be guaranteed a top 6 spot, especially if he can’t turn it around the second half of this season. There needs to be competition for him.

He was in the bottom 6 when he went down with injury.

You're right, but he was playing bad and earned that. Blake Wheeler has played way too many games this season in our top 6. We need a better solution. Kakko or otherwise.

I digress though, as this thread is about Perreault.

He's a points machine. Every game. He's doing this instantly as a freshman. No adjustment period needed.

I'm not going to expect him to instantly be a leading scorer in the NHL, but I'm starting to feel like he's going to no worse than a middle six PP specialist that can score 40-45 points of instant offense.

And I also believe there's that 80-100 point upside where he's a points machine in the NHL.
