I know star performance in WJC doesn’t not guarantee a star in the NHL, but my goodness he’s an exciting prospect to watch.

They won't be burning his rookie contract in a short year. He will be very expensive after that. The difference will be huge for 2023-24 season.

Next year will be shorter too (no way season will start in start of October). Why not postpone it for another year then?

That was sarcasm, btw. This is not what the Ducks will do, if anything they have created trouble for themself for burning the year too fast just because of 1 extra game (see – Comtois). And anyway, I think any amount of NHL or AHL games will not change anything for Z. He has a 3 year contract and it will end after 3 years. If he would still play in Juniors, then there would be a game limit.

IIRC elc slides in the ahl if the player is under 20.

In a normal year where the season would have started October 2020, it would have 100% not burned an elc year if he stayed in the ahl the entire time. But things are different this year but I feel like it still should slide this year.

Hmm, perhaps. I don't know it then, and apologize if it is so.

Pretty sure that he was sent to SD to have an actual pro training camp, learn the system, etc. Unless he's complete booty down in SD, he'll get his opportunity this season.

Gulls have 6 exhibition games starting this weekend. He will get up to speed in pro games like that.

I don't mind it. Ease him and Drysdale into the pro-game a little bit. The Ducks are not going to be very good this year, no need to rush the kids and throw them on a losing team.

Seems very strange. Anaheim tanking?

He had to quarantine when he got to Anaheim so he only got something like 3 days in camp with us. We have a lot of other young guys to evaluate on the NHL roster, no harm in giving him a full camp with the Gulls and getting him adapted to pro hockey in San Diego. If he forces his way to the big club he'll move up like Getzlaf and Perry did.

Smart of the Ducks, especially in the case of Drysdale. Playing in the AHL alone is a big step from junior or college. No need to rush these prospects in this mess of a year.
