Jones was second to last (behind Nattinen) Junior player cut by the Ducks.
The draft year doesn`t matter, the ready-ness is. Of course, it is nothing outstanding for 18 yo to be cut from NHL team in the first place

But Steel got one game (where he was unvicible, by pretty much all the reports) and was let go to Regina.
His next summer will be what can give him a roster spot next October. Right now, he is not ready and far away.
Oh for some reason i thought he had a rep for not giving young players a look, jones also strikes me as an caryle type of player

Sam Steel doing Sam Steel things again 2+2 tonight, stretching his league scoring lead to 7 points, next nearest non Regina player is 12 behind...and has played 10 more games

yeah, steel was the guy I was hoping the leafs would pick if they kept the pick.

So a great pick for the ducks

The counter argument is that his teammate, Adam Brooks, is just 3 points behind in the same number of games, with the same +/-, and he's not a very good prospect. Regina are the highest scoring team in the entire CHL, only Medicine Hat are close, they've got ~25% more goals/game than any other team. Steel is obviously a significant part of that, but at the same time benefits a lot from it, everyone on that team scores a lot because they're so dominant.

With that being said, I think Sam's a very good prospect. Excellent hockey IQ, great passer, and I like his hands, shot and skating too. He is a bit small and perimeter oriented, though, and his talent isn't as elite as the stats suggest, but I do think he'll be a good NHLer. Wouldn't go so far as to consider him a truly elite prospect, though.

Adam Brooks also 2 years older than Steel.

For sure, Steel is a much better prospect. Justing pointing out that big CHL numbers need to be taken with a grain of salt, especially when you're putting them up on a crazy high scoring team. I do think Steel is a good prospect, definitely has the upside to be a quality top 6 forward at the NHL level, but I just don't think he's as elite as his raw stats suggest. Clearly a terrific CHL player in the games I've seen, but doesn't blow you away with his skill level like some prospects do. Also a touch on the small side.

His skill is fairly decent. Great i.q. and an explosive skater. Great vision.

He's been highly touted since his peewee/bantam days being a former 2nd overall whl draft selection.

Definitely a high end prospect in my mind.

He has plenty of skill, just not elite IMO. Watching guys like Marner, Drouin, MacKinnon, Huberdeau, Ehlers, Bennett, Draisaitl, etc. in recent years, their skill jumps out at you immediately in the CHL, they're just clearly way more talented than the other guys on the ice. Sam Steel is very good, but doesn't jump out in the same way, even though he puts up better numbers than most of these guys did. I think he's a strong prospect without a doubt, but I don't have him as a blue chipper like these guys were. Don't have him as a top 15 drafted prospect, and unsure about top 20.

Oh I see what you're saying. I understand what you are saying, I guess I missed out on those comparisons along the way here as he was the last selection in the first round.

His elite skill is his hockey IQ and character. Sure, the ones you mentioned had at least one exceptional physical skill and there is a reason they went that high and Steel was not. But honestly, I'm really excited that he scores that much without being physical superior. I believe if Sam progresses the way I have one player in mind he can become: Joe Pavelski

I`m a Ducks fan and I agree with this. For now, anyway

I guess for me I wouldn't expect him to look as good as those guys listed(all of witch are top 10 picks) and drop to 30, there were/are obviously some points of concern or weakness with him.

At the same time he has looked great at the 30th pick. As a ducks fan we havnt really had any really impactful forward prospects since getz perry and ryan... so its nice to have a few guys in the system that look like they will have an impact in the nhl(I guess you could say rakell but I felt like he flew under the radar kinda)

You don't put up 2.18 PPG without elite skill. I haven't seen him play this year but you don't putt up those kind of numbers without being very skilled even if those skills are not visible to you or others watching him play.

He's on the highest scoring team in the league and there's plenty of high scoring junior players who never amount to anything. It's best to always have your expectations in check

For u19 seasons Steel is in the top 25 all time whl ppg. The next youngest person on that list? Jarome Iginla in 95-96 so it's been over 20 years since someone has had a d+1 like him in the whl. High scoring team? Well when you have Steel putting 2+ ppg is it really that surprising? I realize Brooks is also doing very well but they play on different lines. London was also one of the highest scoring teams last year too right? I wonder if they still would be if they took away Tkachuk, Marner, and Dvorak. Point being that the elite players can have a large effect on the teams scoring.

Scouts miss on players all the time. At this point his draft position shouldnt matter

Rob Schremp?

It is very possible to be an elite looking junior player and not translate well to the NHL.

I'm not comparing the two at all. But just because someone puts up a ton of points doesn't mean they are destined for stardom.

I'd love to know where he'd go if he were eligible for the next draft.

Well, next draft is fairly weak, outside of Nico and Nolan, big drop off in terms of forwards. I could have seen Steel going in top 10 this year if he was eligible.
