Far too much skill, tenacity, and work ethic to be a bust imo. He will be a top 6 player.
I was maybe a teeny weeny bit zealous about it but I couldn't believe folks thought he was dropping off because of the slow start. He's a quick, tenacious bugger.

For now, though, Savoie knows that’s off in the future. The Winnipeg Ice are at the top of the WHL standings, and Savoie is starting to find his scoring groove.

Eventually, he’ll get a chance to show this ability in Buffalo. As reserved and quiet as he appears on the outside, Savoie’s internal confidence is building with every game. His coaches and teammates see it. And Savoie knows he’s right where he needs to be.

“I don’t think there’s a better situation I could be in,” Savoie said.

Sabres prospect Matt Savoie ‘just scratching the surface’ as he finds another gear

So Savoie is refining his game here in Winnipeg under the guidance of Patrick, who played more than 1,200 NHL games and more than 300 of those with the Sabres. After a 90-point season a year ago, he’s scoring at a similar rate this season. The production wasn’t there early in the year, but Patrick thinks Savoie has found a different gear since the new year.

Good article. I wish we could fast forward a few years and plop Savoie right into our center core. Seems like an ideal third line center. Him and Krebs could make for two annoying centers to play against for other teams.

13-15-28 in the 18 games since he was snubbed for World Juniors. That says a LOT. Plus they are using him against the other team's top center.

This is actually perfect development. We have zero reason to rush this kid. I trust Patrick and the Sabres Dev Team to get this kid where he needs to be.

Quotes like these should be pumped right into Sabres fan's veins:

“I think the biggest thing is just possessing the puck more, having the puck on my stick and making them come take it off of me instead of throwing a blind pass in the middle or just making a turnover,” Savoie said. “I think at the next level, keeping puck possession is so important. When you first enter the NHL or AHL, wherever it is, you don’t get as many puck touches. I think making the most of whenever you have the puck and whenever you have possession.”

He’s already Winnipeg’s best faceoff player, but Patrick wants to see him be even more dominant and win each one.

“We’ve had four first-rounders here and we’ve had players traded here who were drafted, but no team has spent anywhere close to the amount of time that Buffalo has here,” Patrick said. (about the Sabres Development Staff)

Was he watching Krebs early in the season?

An important point from the article:

Coming into training camp their plan was always to send me back and it didn’t really matter how I played,” Savoie said. “They wanted me to get another year of development in junior, which totally makes sense for a guy my size and my age. I was really open to going back, especially with the team we had coming back here. I thought it was a great development opportunity and they did too just to get stronger, have another year where you’re possessing the puck more and playing more like 21 or 22 minutes a night instead of on the third or fourth line at a higher level.”

That should put to rest any idea that the length of time he spent at camp was indicative of the team wanting to keep him around for the season or that he almost made the team.

I think my favorite play tonight outside of finishing to put them up 2-1 was his blocked shot with about 2 minutes to go in the game.

A Matthew Savoie question -- what are the chances he spends 2023-24 somewhere in Europe?
His Jan. 1, 2004 birthdate renders him AHL ineligible for about half the season.
And I want Matthew competing against older players for an entire season.
There's no way he should be returned to the WHL for any length of time next season, IMO.
There's an argument to be made that he's too good for that level right now.
And I don't want him thrust into a Shane Wright/Kraken/OHL-AHL type scenario that was such a mess.
If Matthew's good enough to make the Sabres out of training camp, then so be it.
But I don't think he'll be ready at that stage, and a full season in a top European league makes good sense to me.

I think the consensus was that while it might be a better level of competition, the soft factors that can make it such a tough adjustment over there might not be worth it. Maybe if he has connections over there, I guess

From the Roster Thread:

Since he hasn't actually shown that he's outgrown his league nor is he dominating it, there is nothing at all wrong with going back to the WHL.

To repeat what I posted there:

... he's having a nice year. He's not dominant at that level. He hasn't gone out and been dominant against his peer group. This idea that he's crushing the WHL is not the reality of what he's doing.

Feels like the same conversations about plenty of players who were better served by going back. If he makes it out of camp, great. That's going to indicate a level of work he puts in between now and then. But the idea that the NHL is best for him is not the way.
