He's a clear #2OA for me as well, but dropping down to a 4 or 5 pick wouldn't be the worst thing to happen. Just means less pressure to crack a NHL roster and gives him 1 more year in junior. And that's a good thing.
If Ottawa isnt picking 1 i dont think there is any chance he doesnt get picked by them if they pick 2 to 5. He fits so well into the style of team they are building and they need a 1 c.

I think his worst case scenario is a modern day Keith Primeau which i would not be upset about.

I see people have Drysdale at number 2. As a sens fan id love that as they need help upfront more than on the back end. If Ottawa lands two picks in the top 5 but are at 3 and 5 it means they get Byfield and one of Stutzle or Raymond. Would be a hell of a haul.

For the people that think he can bust, I just dont agree. The work ethic, compete and two way play I saw from him against the 67's last year in the playoffs makes very skeptical that he wont be a player with the skillset he has. His back pressure was Hossa esque.

The sens are good at developing players there is no rush to bring him to the NHL next season if he isnt ready they wont force it.

It's almost never a mistake to hold a player down in Junior, especially if they have late birthdays.

Keep him down till he is making a mockery of the league. Tall kids usually take longer to get their body coordinated. It must be weird growing an inch every three months or so.

#2 is where I think he goes too. This is Lafreniere's draft and he'll be the main focal point and go #1 but don't sleep on Byfield either.

Draisaitl is an absolute genius on the ice. Not seeing anything close to that from Byfield.
At the same age Byfield is a WAY better player. So do with that what you want but comparing a players IQ to that of a Jr player is non sensical.

Did you see this genius Draisaitl at 2013 ?
Right.... How about 2012 in Draisaitls 17 year old season.

Did you see this genius Draisaitl at 2013 ?

Even in the 2015 Memorial Cup with Kelowna I didn't see it translating as well as it has turned out.

You could see the skill but he seemed slow and average skating wise in that tournament.

To Bring up the point bert made I see byfield falling somewhere between Keith Primeau and Draisaitl at his peak, which is a very fine player indeed.

Picking Drysdale in that range would not be going off the board.

I'd be extremely surprised if the top 2 picks were Laf and Byfield.

To me it's pretty much a 95% certainty.

I think Drysdale is going to be a great player but that speaks more to how great these 2 guys are as prospects.

So scoring at a higher PPG rate in the CHL doesnt do it for you then?

Not sayin that Byfield with be as good as Leons peak that we're seeing here, but be skates much better and possibly has more pedigree going into the draft than Leon did.

Nope. I think Byfield was certainly toolsier at the same age, but Draisaitl was and is brilliant in how he saw the ice

And slow and prodding. Nothing in junior told you that he would be this good. Nothing at the same age would indicate that he was a better prospect than Byfield - land n the event he goes back next year, lets see how badly he dominates the OHL in his 18 year old season before we make any assumptions at all.

This is hindsight at its finest.

Playing great since coming back from injury. 7 points in 4 games! All assists though, wonder if is wrist is still bothering him a bit. Nonetheless, great to have him back playing

Fantastic point made by Cam here, if he has a better roster he probably would have been well over 2ppg!

Looks like the 3rd best to me?

Either way its beyond ridiculous that people think this kid has questionable offensive talent. And without a doubt he would be a straight up killer on a typical stacked London Knights team.

And as a proud Sudburian, I can still appreciate how much courage and character it takes as a top prospect to come up here and put your future in the hands of a small market team in northern ontario. Its getting better since the ownership change, and Cory Stillman helped bring some legitimacy to the team, but the Wolves have some warts.

And for Byfield to be able to rise to the challenge and still put on this kind of performance, its speaking volumes to the people that are dialed into the proper channel.

I don't think so. Draisaitl had been excellent in all major competitions. Byfield was disappointing in all major competitions. Draisaitl has been underestimed. Currently Byfield is'nt better than Rossi, Drysdale and Perfetti. Average points in OHL and WHL can't be compared. Kaliyev (51 G 51 A in 67 games) = 33th and Dach (25 G, 48 A in 62 games) = 3th

Byfield is clearly the better prospect than Draisaitl was.

Go Oilers. Im in the city all the time for work, and I always appreciate the fact that I meet smart, true hockey fanatics while Im there. I feel more at home in Edmonton during a 2 week stay in a hotel than I did in the entire 2 years that I lived in Calgary.

But as I remember 2014 was billed from early on as a fairly weak draft, especially at the top end of it. And Draisaitl wasnt even ranked at #3 by most, although I could be wrong.. But Reinhart was unanimously ranked as a better prospect by everyone, I do remember that much.

And if anyone says that Reinhart (who was almost begrudgingly ranked as the best forward in his draft) was a better prospect than Byfield, they're lying or dont remember correctly. Its not close.

But with that being said, Byfield is almost surely never going to have the same kind of massive season that Leon is having right now. Nor will 99.9% of other NHLers. But this wasnt the same player that got drafted in 2014.

Byfield was also 10 months younger than Draistl in his draft year, and is currently 11 months younger than Rossi. A closer comparison to Rossi's offense would be Rossi's 18-19 totals. As far as drai scoring more in wjc, it's a lot easier for an 18 year old to get a top line role on Germany than for a 17 year old to get the same on Canada.

Whichever team takes Byfield will be extremely happy. A lot of people aren’t fans of him for whatever reason but he’s a tremendous prospect with a lot of promise.

I’ve gotten to see him live around 10 times and he’s always one of the best players on the ice driving play...it’ll be exciting to see his game as he grows into his big frame.
