I don't believe in passing on a player like byfield because other prospects play that position. Any of them can move to wing. There isn't a single NHL C who would become a bad player on the wing. It's the opposite switch that often doesn't work.

I also just think that Byfield isn’t the second best player in the draft, so position is moot anyway.

Agreed. Especially in this thread where people freak the F out because some don't have him at #2. That's how you get those sarcastic hyperbole comments.

I agree, every scout has a different opinion on him and every other prospect. He will definitely go in the top 5, due to being a big centre, that every team at the top of the draft covets.

LA doesn't need Byfield. They have Turcotte and Vilardi, and still also have Kopitar. They need more scoring wingers or offensive defensemen.

You are right they probably don't but he would developed nicely behind Kopitar and Vilardi.

If they get the first pick Laf is a no brainers for them, 2nd pick will they go off the board and skip Byfield?

I doubt it.

Man that is a really hot take and I'm betting that most GMs would take him 2nd?

BTW who do you have 2nd then?

I have Drysdale second, and I think picking him makes a lot more sense than Byfield when you already have Kopitar, Turcotte and Vilardi. Besides Doughty, they don't have that many top-end defensemen or defense prospects.

I like Drysdale alot but that smacks alot of picking for need rather than BPA.

I think Byfield isn't as skilled as some think, and I see nothing in Drysdale's game that doesn't warrant that of an elite defense prospect. Unless you are going to use it against him that he's sub 6'0, which as we see with this rookie crop of defensemen isn't much of an impediment anymore, he's likely the best defense prospect since Dahlin.

Fair enough but I still think that Byfield goes before him and 2nd overall.

His size, skating, position and young age all has the makings of a slobber fest from NHL GMs.

Drysdale is my 3oa. Byfield is the clear 2oa imo

That's picking by need though and that is not the best path to take. Besides, you can never have too many natural centers. It's much easier for a center to slot in at W than vice versa. That also means you've got wings who can win at the dot and that is very handy given the recent rules regarding faceoffs.

If I said they should pick Byfield instead of Drysdale, that would be picking based on something other than taking who I believe to be the best player.

I am not so sure he will go top 5.
Stutzle, Drysdale, Holtz, Raymond or Rossi - quite a competition for 2-5 slots.

He will definitely go top 5. It’s only a small question if he goes 2nd or 3rd. Fourth is a small chance if someone really needs a D and goes off the board like Detroit did last year

I think that of the top 5 picks in this year's draft Byfield has the highest bust percentage. He's big, he's got a tremendous shot and great wheels. What I'm seeing from his is good hockey sense, not great hockey sense, though. Lafreniere, Stutzle, Rossi all have him beat in that regard. He could be a Jumbo Joe at best, or he may turn into a Keith Primeau/Chris Gratton with less bite to his game than all of them, or he could be the kind of guy that takes 3-4 years to figure it out and becomes Oli Jokinen 2.0. I don't think he'll be the next Jason Bonsignore, though. I still think a team like LA or Ottawa take him with the 2 or 3 pick of they end up in that slot, though. I'm hoping Detroit opts for Stutzle at 2 or 3 if they can't get Lafreniere because I think in the long run Stutzle will turn out to be the better overall player for the kind of team that GMSY is trying to build.

Its been a rough two months for the kid. First unfairly getting criticized for his time at the world juniors then soon there after getting injured. I really hope he picks up where he left off in early December so he can put all the questions about his game behind him.

Agreed. I find it crazy how many people are pushing him down their rankings. Guy is the clear 2OA to me.

He's a clear #2OA for me as well, but dropping down to a 4 or 5 pick wouldn't be the worst thing to happen. Just means less pressure to crack a NHL roster and gives him 1 more year in junior. And that's a good thing.

I really can’t imagine he’s sent back to Junior no matter where he’s picked. Usually when a top prospect who’s already putting up big numbers is only sent down when they aren’t physically mature enough (Drouin, Marner, Strome, etc) and need a year working out first.

Byfield doesn’t have that issue and his size is already one of his biggest strengths.
