8 games in the AHL so far, 4 goals and 4 assists.
Hope they keep him there all year - he’s still so young, just turned 20 ~3 months ago, there’s no rush. IMO if you’re looking to develop a guy into a star, you should wait until he has a dominant season at one level before moving him up a level. Byfield had that in the OHL, in his draft year, but hasn’t yet had a dominant AHL season, and I think has been rushed a little to the NHL. Let him dominate the AHL this year, then return to the Kings next year with lots of confidence, and the development that comes with being a star at the previous level, receiving huge minutes and being relied on to produce.

His upside is so high, the goal should be a star 1C, not a solid 2/3C. I think a year dominating the AHL is the best way he could use this season.

Dominating, PPG in the AHL at age 20. Sounds like the player's development is precisely on schedule.

How is being PPG in the AHL in our D+3 season a good thing exactly?

Not saying he's a bust, but for a 2nd OA pick, you assume he'll be PPG+ n the AHL as soon as D+1... Not D+3
You assume.
I look closely at the player and the situation, a tall prospect with a longer development curve. So many #1 and #2s rushed to the NHL and busted. Why imitate the Rangers disastrous results?

Only 6 players have ever been PPG+ in the AHL at 19 years old. Only two of them played more than 50 games that season.

As long as he continues to develop, that’s the key. f*** the timeline, right?

Of course, most players aren't AHL eligible in D + 1 anyways so...

Yeah there's only 36 players with 20+ games played in the AHL their 18 year old seasons. Of them Byfield was 14 out of 36 by PPG.

For comparison, there's only 1 18 year old in the AHL this season.

And that was boosted by the COVID rules since the CHL players aren't eligible.

I'm not saying that his development has been great because it certainly hasn't been. He only had six points in 11 games in the AHL last year but he was scoreless in the first five games coming off of the broken ankle. PPG in the last six before getting called up.

It's always been something with him so far...COVID shortened season, broken ankle and then the illness this season. Will be interesting to see how he does at the NHL level after the inevitable call-up: if he can avoid another land mine.

A Center No. 2 pick again in AHL at +3 draft is very rare.

Stutzle and Beniers are far ahead of him.

The longer his topic will be active on this site, the worse it will be.

It's also notable that the majority of those players came from men's leagues in Europe before doing so at age 19.

It's good, but not "dominating" is not a word I'd use. Four other players from his draft year are at the same or higher PPG. 63 other players in the AHL.

This is on target. I don’t have a strong read on him one way or another. But if others think teens are routinely PPG AHL players it felt worthwhile to help them out.

Didn't realize they were also 6 foot 5 and 220, players that tend to take longer to develop.
I often hear that but there is confusion. This pattern holds true for hard-working big players who aspire to break into bottom 6. In 2016/17, Byfield was the best player in the world born in 2002. Year after year, his performance declines relative to his age.

The big elite players, on the contrary, dominate more easily than the small size from their debut in the NHL.

From their first NHL seasons, Lindros, Kopitar and Malkin dominated.

When Byfield was sent down:

“I’ve always said I don’t think anybody should lose their spot to injury or illness, it’s outside of their control,” McLellan said

Well Mr. McLellan- clearly Byfield has…he has played well enough to have his spot back that you took from him due to illness…
