Correct. But per your own words, if a draft doesn't have elite talent at the top, it is a bad/weak draft in your eyes. Fleury, Staal, Horton Zherdev, Vanek were top 5 FYI.

...Ok.

"Its pretty hard for it not to be a bad draft if the top few of the draft are not of the absolute top level.

Not the fault of any of these kids. I think that type of talk is misplaced, but I don't know how people are now concluding that its not a bad draft because secondary tier players are going to turn into good players. Every draft has good hockey players. If this draft doesn't have the absolute top level players at the top of the draft, its going to be hard for it to not be a bad draft. I've seen absolutely nothing so far to not say 2017 wasn't a bad draft."

And thats not what you originally claimed I said.

Just accept the L, you tried to make an awful point based on something I didn't even say. If you are going to try that, at least get what I said correct.

I don't give a flying f*** about the perceived quality of the draft. I care about Nico and how good he is, because he's been damn good so far. He's mature beyond his years in his approach and the way he plays the game. He's taken over the #1 center position (though Zajac is out and Zacha hasn't been that good so far) and doesn't look out of place at all. Last game was his first full game in that position (he's played next to Hall and Stafford before but never started there), and against a strong Lightning team it was his best so far tallying 2 assists and he could have many more points.

There’s also an element of McDavid and Matthews playing in hockey forward markets. More hype more follow up. Now that the Devils have gotten their one US national game in how many fans inside or outside the NJ viewing zone are going to see him? Many folks have already prejudged the draft after a handful of games - some in this thread - and many will develop opinions based on a few tweets or sound bites without watching more than a few minutes of the players at issue. So sure - it’s a bad draft - I get it your team had a lower pick and hah hah the Devils and Flyers had back luck to have high picks. Maybe that’s true but the hot take while first is often wrong. Oh and if Nico never scores more than 65 points in a season but he becomes the upbeat face of a team recovering from a dumpster fire and he sells some more tickets and jerseys and brings in some more young fans and generate more interest in the team he will be a franchise player.

First 2 goals of Nico's career 5 minutes in against the Sens.

The Devils only scored 2 total goals against the Senators last year.

4 points in a game and ~10 minutes since being put between Hall and Stafford on the top line.

Followed up his best game of the season against the Lightning with an arguably better one tonight against the Sens. He's feeling it now and meshing incredibly well with Hall. That duo could be insanely deadly for us moving forward. I am genuinely giddy.

As a Canadian with Swiss heritage I’ve been following him since I first read about him when he was 15 or so.
I’m very proud and excited to see how he’s playing now and how much he’s improved in just the last year and a half. I knew he was good but I never thought he’d make such a seamless transition into the NHL. His last WJC when he just dominated should have been a clue how good he truly was and is

He is developing a reputation for proving doubters wrong and it is fun to watch.

He wasn’t supposed to go Top 15, and he played his way up the rankings. No way he would go 1st overall and he did that. He isn’t ready for the NHL and he proves that wrong.

He might just be better then almost anyone really expected.

His two-way play is what separates him for me. Even if he doesn't develop into a 70-100 point center he's going to help the Devils win games for a long time.

There definitely was an unfair attitude that since Nico wasn’t a generational talent like McDavid or Matthews, that it didn’t really matter if you lost the lottery as you aren’t missing out on a top player.

It is annoying so far seems like a rubbish attitude by people trying to dismiss him before he ever laced up. Yes he isn’t generational, but this is still a special player and potential superstar
I agree. Anyone who doesn't recognize hischier's talent and potential wasn't paying attention. He's really really good

A lot of people (including me) had Hischier ranked in the middle of the first round during the pre-season last year and saw him as a realistic target to go between 10-15. Let's not act like he was that long of a shot.
I mean Hischier scored at close to a PPG pace with the Swiss U18 team as an underager in his D-2. It's more of that he didn't the exposure he deserved in his D-2 due to the league he played in.

His start has pleasently surprised me though.

I think the main reason he was ranked so low going into his draft season was that the 15/16 season was somewhat a down year for his standarts. He was playing for three different teams, splitting his time between NLA, NLB and Swiss U20. So that makes it hard to create some chemistry with the teammates constantly changing. Also when he played for Berns senior team he was on the fourth line with two guys who only recorded three and four points respecitvely in around 40 games. That was probably the worst line in the league from an offensive standpoint. Furthermore he had a disappointing Ivan Hlinka that year after beeing arguably the best player in the same tournament a year prior. Before that 15/16 season he put up several ppg records in swiss junior leagues and was seen as the best prospect ever to come out of Switzerland. I think Craig Button had him at number 7 in a very early list. I even remember reading an article from a scout seeing him as a potential first overall pick in 2015 or 2016. Unfortunatly a can't find the source to that article anymore, so you'll have to take my word for it. Now after that lesser season he bounced back big time in his draft year but was still a bit underrated because his numbers dropped late in the season, due to his wrist injury. But in general i think being underrated was and still is a good thing for him. It takes away some of the pressure so he can focus more on improving his game and helping his team.

The kid just needs to put on some muscle of the next few years. However, he been pretty darn good as is. I can't wait to see what he can to once he gets stronger.

30 lbs of muscle is way too much he would look like a body builder. I don't see him being much more than 190
