quiet fan base... its a breath of fresh air not seeing this thread going insane and fans already claiming hes the next future hall of famer and NHL leading scorer as early as next year
I think most sane fans of both the Devils and Flyers realize they're likely getting a very good, not great player.
And considering we both moved up the lottery to have the chance, we're both good with that.
We Devils fans think we're getting a great player and I think you Flyers fan should too, but we both recognize he's no McDavid, Laine, Eichel or Matthews. They were both just voted the second and third best prospects on this site so I think the potential for them being great players is there. When I hear good player I think Henrique or Couturier.
Growing up I hated the Devils so much, more than any other team (29 currently). Honestly though I miss the rivalry, I hope both Nico and Nolan both turn out to be impact star players. It is strange how tame the debate between these two are, considering the Devils beat us every game even if they're a sub 500 team lol.
The Devils have a loyal fan base and I like what this management is doing to the organization. Bringing in talent, skill and speed. Ray Shero is gonna bring back excitement to New Jersey.
Nico and Hall will be very dynamic and I can see Nico becoming a perennial all-star no doubt.
Just moved to NYC and will be cheering for my boy from the Q from day 1.
And seriously, the McDavid-Eichel-Laine-Matthews comparisons have to stop. Patrick scored over 100 pts as a 16-17 yo in the CHL. Hischier carried a young Mooseheads team in the playoffs and surprised everybody on international ice at the WJC.
At the end of the day, you have to wait and see. Pavel Datsyuk was not a 1st overall and I'm pretty sure he's the definition of a franchise player. Nico will be too.
It was an amazing feat. That team was 27-35. Nico dragged them by himself all season long. When one compares that team to McKinnon's Mooseheads who went 58-6, the difference is astonishing.
And to think Nico didn't get the same hype as MacKinnon. The Swiss actually outscored MacKinnon in the Q in his first season.
I watched the Road to One documentary of the behind the scences of the NJD leading to the draft. They really wanted to pick not only the best hockey player between Nico and Nolan but also the person itself. One that could have an impact in New Jersey. Nico was presented to the Swiss or German community the following day his draft. Visited minor league kids and I think he already feels much appreciated in Jersey.
Great pick for the Devils.
Hischier was a top 15 pick according to a bunch of places entering the season. Button had him at 13 in September and Hockeyprospect.com had him at 8 in last year's Black Book.Yes, how extreme was the performance of those teams makes a huge difference indeed.
McKinnon's Mooseheads: 58-6-3-1 -> 882 winning % -> on an 82 games schedule = 144 points
Nico's Mooseheads: 27-35-3-3 -> 441 winning % -> 82 games = 72 points
McKinnon's Mooseheads: GF 347, GA 176, goal differential +171
Nico's Mooseheads: GF 229, GA 259, goal differential -30
One more astonishing fact... Nico had a plus/minus of +20. The next best forward for Halifax? 0.
Last but not least, it was his first season in North America (so, on small ice) and with so many games. When folks take all this into consideration, it is extraordinary what he achieved. I would like to know how many prospects who weren't ranked in the top 25 in their draft season rocketed to first overall. And doing that while playing for a bottom feeder team too.

The biggest riser who went 1st overall in recent history is Jovanovski, who played on a Windsor team that finished 2nd last in their division. I don't think he was ranked by any of the services as a worthy prospect to start the year. I'm not sure if EJ or Patrick Kane were in the top 25 either. The other thing people are overlooking with the constant Mackinnon comparison is that Drouin dramatically outscored him yet MacKinnon was viewed as the best prospect on that team. MacKinnon's playoff and Memorial Cup production was also absolutely ridiculous putting up 2.19 ppg over the duration of the Memorial Cup and QMJHL playoffs.
Yeah. I said back in the original Nico thread in the summer of last year that I thought Nico was a sleeper candidate for 1OA and a serious top 5 threat given his international performances and the history of Halifax imports. I was actually quite surprised by his omission on McKenzie's original list. McKenzie claimed he was 16th, but who knows how accurate that is. All I know was that he wasn't in the top 15 in this piece. I think it was due to not impressing at Hlinka after looking good in prior international events.Thank you for your time and information. I remember reading that he wasn't top 25 in an article. Maybe it was in McKenzie's?
Given the circumstances (awful team, injury to the wrist, new to small ice, never played as many games - even the Swiss NLA, the top pro league in Switzerland, has a 50 games regular season...), I think that 7 points in 6 games can be considered a success for Nico.

Anyone know why he chose 18 for Team Swiss vs. #13 that he wore for Halifax? (For jersey reasons obviously)![]()
The MacKinnon comparisons are just a byproduct of both being 1OA from Halifax. Better comparisons are Huberdeau and Ehlers.
Comparisons to MacKinnon is justified. We were not talking about skills here but achievement with the same organization. Therefore, yes it applies to compare Nico to MacKinnon and what Nico has done was much more impressive than MacK. The only thing is that MacKinnon won the Memorial Cup because of a stacked team with Drouin on it as well.
It shows how Nico was the most contributing factor for his team this year despite being on one of the worst team of the Q.

....That's actually less of a comparison.
