The scouts don't feel the same way though

"We usually debate the top three picks in any draft for quite some time at our scouting meetings," one scout said. "This year, it took about one minute to say, McDavid-Eichel-Hanifin and there was no debate. We moved on to who's No. 4 almost immediately."

To be fair that was only a sample size of 10 scout, and they have been prone to changing their minds in the past. Just 2 years ago Jones was #1 on 7/10 Bob polled after Xmas.

Apparently Marner has outscored both Tavares, Hall and Seguin in their draft years, in less games nontheless. That's really special and just goes to show exactly how good this kid is.

Marner has 110 points in 53 games.

John Tavares had 104 points in 56 games.
Taylor Hall had 106 points in 57 games.
Tyler Seguin 106 points in 63 games.

The most impressive part? Both Tavares and Hall were late birthdays and thus 6 months or older than Marner in their draft years. Seguin was also about 3 months older. That really puts these numbers into perspective. Marner is more than likely not done growing either so the team that passes this diamond up is gonna regret it for a long time. Seeing Marner ranked in the #6-8 range as Central Skating, Future Considerations and ISS has him is just mind-numblingly stupid. Kid should be in contention for 3rd with Hanifin.

would love the Leafs to grab him, but I think if we have chance of Strome or Marner...Management might go for the big center....but who knows maybe Dale Hunter convinces them otherwise.

Size is obviously a big concern (height and weight), arguably the only thing holding him back going top 3.

For those that frequently watch him, do you see him as a future #1 centre? I'm sure if he were 6'1" people would be drooling over him.

It sounds like the guy is supremely skilled but drafting a guy that small at #3 or #4 overall has got to be really hard for an NHL GM to pull the trigger on

he is the same size as Kane at 5'11, and playing style is compared to him a lot...don't see how it is any more an issue then Kane's size was and has proven not to be a problem in the NHL.

Marner may not play all the 10 games remaining either. Usually top end talent won't play the last 2 or 3 depending on a few different things.

I said earlier in the thread he was like Kane.... When he has the puck on his stick he is very much like Kane.. shifty, elusive to hit, makes hard passes look easy. Without the puck he's like Giroux... defensively aware, feisty and willing to do the dirty work. Marner is a unique prospect do to the fact he's defensively aware and will do just about anything to get the puck in the dzone.

Tavares also put up 134 points as a 16 year old in the OHL. 118 as a 17 year old strangly enough both season's PPG were exactly 2. both season's were statistically superior to his draft year season.

Marner is a stud, would be very happy with any one of Hanifin, Marner, Strome, Barzal at the draft.

Ya I realized later I had overlooked that. Still though, Marner could match that production. 134 in 67 might be tough but 118 in 59 is very doable. In the end he'll still be very close to a guy who was a late birthday and had exceptional status. That's pretty huge.

I don't see why Barzal is in the same conversation. He is not producing like the others.

It's not only a matter of production though. Barzal's skillset is extremely interesting. He's so skilled and fast and has elite vision. He also doesn't play with great linemates, which doesn't help production wise.

I have him ahead of Strome at this point but I can understand why people would disagree with that.

There are many players with interesting skillsets, but at the end of the day he has to prove he can produce at a high level. So I'm skeptical.

People are trusting the "eye test" a bit too much.

He's also playing in a different league, and has only 1 other guy on his team above a point per game, and he's a dman.

He's far and away the best offensive player on his team.

Well, if it makes you feel any better he's been on fire since returning from injury.

If Barzal hits 60 points on the season (in around 40 games) then he's basically locked into a top 8 draft selection. At his recent pace that's well within reach. And you add that to his skillset and talent and you will find more than a few scouts and organizations who are willing to take a chance on him.

This is a guy who I'm going to repeatedly point out was at one point the second-best prospect among his age group in Canada. And he's done nothing to suggest that the talent he displayed as a kid has just gone away.

For me Mitchell Marner would be a 2nd overall pick if he was for the 2014 NHL Draft, Marner is so impressive but he has these beautiful stats due to the team he play for, the London Knights are probably the most powerful offensive in the OHL, still Marner would be a perfect fit with a team like Colombus or Ottawa.

I'd argue that London is an offensive powerhouse because of Marner.

Remove Marner from the Knights and they are a team that would be in the crap area of the west with Saginaw, Windsor and Plymouth. Marner would be doing great no matter which junior team he played for. Some teams aren't good fits for some players but some players can produce in any system and Marner is an example of that. But London is a good spot for a player like him. They love small skilled guys and tend to lean towards picking them when they draft.
