Pretty sure NJ was too slow after the playoffs to tell the NHL they'd give up their 1st, so they have their 1st this draft (2013) and will have to forfeit their 2014 draft 1st. Some please correct me if (when) I'm misinformed

They did a year before the draft when there looked to be 30 first round material defensemen.

The difference is that by this time last year, everyone knew it wasn't a deep draft because of injuries and disappointing seasons. This time this year, this draft looks even better than it did at the beginning of the year.

You can't make blanket statements like that.

I don't think he's been having a disappointing year at all, he was coming from a pretty low level of competition, now he's stepping into NCAA hockey against better, older players, where plenty of good prospects struggle as rookies, and he's doing decently well. With that being said, he was considered a reach at 21 last year, if Calgary hadn't taken him there I don't know that any other team would have taken him in the 1st round. This draft is deeper than last year's, I'd guess he'd be a 2nd round pick, but who knows really. On a lot of 2013 mock drafts I've seen guys like Lazar, Hagg, Ristolainen, Gautheir, Rychel, Mantha, Fucale, Duclair, etc. being pegged as roughly 20th-30th overall picks, competition will be very tough this year to even make it into the 1st round.

Not to derail the thread, but Jankowski has been producing against the low-leve college teams and putting up goose-eggs against the top teams. He's been disappointing.

Anyway, I'd have Jankowski in my mid-2nd this year.

I don't think it would've been fair to expect Jankowski to waltz into the NCAA and put up gaudy numbers. One thing a lot of prospect-watchers don't factor into Jankowski's development is that he grew from 5'7" to 6'3" in the year preceding his selection by Calgary; as a result, he hasn't filled out his frame yet. I believe he weighs in at around 180 lbs now, and you'd typically want someone of his height and position to come in around 200-210 lbs.

Jankowski needs to hit the weights big-time this summer. If he comes into camp having added another 15-20 pounds of muscle, he should be able to impose his will on the ice.

Is he going to to be taking some illegal substances to pack on that type of muscle in one summer?

That's almost impossible, natural, fyi.

For a fully developed adult it's almost impossible. For a kid who hasn't even finished puberty yet, it's not necessarily as hard. You can have hormones going into overdrive at that age, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Jankowski put on 10 lb by next season (may not get him to the 200 mark, but he won't be full beanpole anymore).

Not unexpected. I considered this year a total gimme from the beginning, since he essentially skipped an entire level of difficulty in hockey. If the same trend continues next season, then I'll let myself be a little concerned.

I still like this pick. I think he has a high ceiling, and his bust potential is minimized with size, good skating ability and pretty good IQ.

Let's see what he does this off-season to bulk himself up. This was his first season with quality competition and real systems play. That is what people keep forgetting at the same time, in conjunction with his freakish growth spurt.

Feaster just did what Feaster does - talk too much. Even if they really felt that way about Jankowski, it is just putting too much pressure on the kid.

I think he will become a quality NHL player. He was looking more and more comfortable as the season wore on, and had a long layoff due to his injury.

Besides, on a Calgary prospect pool nearly devoid of 'blue-chip high-ceiling' prospects, but containing decent 'depth', this was exactly the kind of move the Flames SHOULD have made, and I am glad they did. After Galchenyuks and the Grigorenkos were gone earlier in the round, there wasn't much else available that could POTENTIALLY become a 1st line center with size. Even if he doesn't work out, and just becomes a 3rd or 4th liner, or even a career AHL'er, I am happy the Flames rolled the dice on this kind of prospect that COULD POTENTIALLY become an important piece.

Judging by the fact the Flames will get a top three pick, I guess he would go top three. If the Flames weren't drafting, he would probably be a mid second or early third.

Hohoho, congratulations! You made it before the 100th person in this thread to make the very same joke. Hurrah.

Keep that bag on your head, objective and humorous fan of the Flames' rival team, I'm sure the look improves your appearance to a great degree. But, not to be mean, it seems a little out of date. I hear plastic is the new material of fashion. I just sincerely hope that the bag doesn't represent shame in your favourite team, for your sake. I just can't imagine doing the same. There's no pride in that, unless of course you are indeed wearing it for cosmetic reasons. In which case, my eyes thank you for the courtesy.

There is no way the Flames would pick Jankowski with their first pick in 2013. We're talking one of Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin or Barkhov. Remember, they traded down from 14th to 21st to get MJ last year, because they knew he would be there and they knew they only had a mid-round pick to start with. Weisbrod was very high on him, so they decided to swing for the fences.

In this year's draft they would probably try to go for him with St. Louis' pick.

Mid 2nd, which is where he should have went last year.

I don't know, the Flames were obviously high on him but this is a deeper draft and the Flames (Weisbrod) will likely have two picks in the 20-30 range this year and none until the third round, so I think he may still have gone in the first round, because they definitely want/wanted to draft Jankowski.

I just think it is ignorant to suggest because the Flames drafted a player a lot higher than was expected in one year under a different set of circumstances they WOULD (note the subjunctive mood) do the same under completely different circumstances the next year. In the case of Oiler and Canuck fans it's probably ignorant in both senses of the word - unknowledgeable and just plain rude.

The fact that Feaster has become a running joke at HF but not Lowe and Tambellini is a mystery to me.

Has his play in college raised his stock at all?
Stat-wise it doesn't really look like it (granted I assume he is playing less minutes)

Deep draft, I doubt he sees the 1st round. Mid second maybe? If the flames were so high on him, maybe the 31st-34th pick.

I don't think his play raised his stock, but it didn't hurt it either. If you watch some of his highlights you can see he has a lot of skill - but he's tiny compared to a lot of the guys he's playing against (weight-wise - not height). He did pretty much what was expected of a guy jumping from prep school hockey to the NCAA.

This year and next will be more telling.

As for where he'd go - likely somewhere in the 2nd as this seems like a deeper draft.

0.53 points per game if I recall correctly, which isn't too bad for a guy who went from HS to NCAA, although I'm not sure if that's enough to wow scouts with his progress.

Hes playing at what I personally penciled him at for his first year, 0.5PPG. People need to remember he is a barely 18 year old kid playing with men 3,4,5 years his senior.

Next year will be a much better barometer of if he was worth where he was picked.

I still think he lands in the 25~ range.

I think he would go in the first round this year, albeit around the 25th pick.

Even last year, I don't think he would've fell out of the first round. I think too many took TSN (Pierre McGuire's) initial reaction to the pick with too much salt. Jankowski was rated in the early 2nd in most mocks, so it's not really a reach to take him in the 1st. He was a big unknown because of the level of competition that he played against, and he has shown this year that he is legit and can hang with the big boys. His sophomore season will tell a lot of his NHL potential IMO.

I would personally be upset if Feaster traded Jankowski for Maata tomorrow (to put it into perspective). I also wouldn't know how I'd feel if Feaster traded Jankowski and Sieloff for Teravainen.

If Jankowski adds 10-15 lbs of muscle to his 6'3" frame this offseason (assuming he doesn't grow another inch), it would be good progress. It's not as difficult as some may think at his age and height. Heck, my brother gained 10 lbs of muscle at the age of 24 from eating right, hitting the weights and taking protein shakes in 4 months and he is 5'7".

Doesn't make it any less true. I'm so excited for this years draft, when Feaster goes off the board again rather than drafting Mackinnon or Jones.

Jankowski mentioned on twitter a few weeks ago than he was less than 170 pounds. That is unreal at 6'4". It's amazing he can skate.

People think that adding muscle is just super easy, I would like to place a bet that no one can put on 10 pounds in pure lean muscle in under 6 months to a year. Muscle is the hardest thing for your body to acquire. I assume in 2-3 years Jankowski will probably be around 205, but not this summer, It would be all fat. People also saying he would go in the third round are delusional. He was first round talent, it was just there were a ton of question marks. It has been noted many times that other GM's would have taken him with their first rounder also.

Did he go off the board with Baertschi, Gaudreau, Wotherspoon, Brossoit, and Gillies?

Is he 6'4" now? Nice!!!! 170lbs is crazy light for that height. With that frame, the right diet and hitting the gym 5 days a week in the offseason, I think he can add 10-15 lbs of muscle and 5 lbs of fat in 6 months.

I hope he is dedicated to improving and not all the college puck bunnies :naughty:

Good luck with that. People seem to forget he also drafted Baertschi (and Wotherspoon, Gaudreau, Gillies, Brossoit, etc).

Keep in mind Feaster was prepared to take Murphy before Carolina snagged him right before us, so it's not like Sven was our guy all along.
