C/LW Pavel Zacha - Sarnia Sting, OHL (2015, 6th, NJD)

That's the thing that worries me about Zacha. His father basically put him in a position where he either becomes a professional hockey player (preferably an NHL All-star player so that they will force all the morons (sic) around Czech hockey eat the crow), or his life is a bust. He was raising him as a future hockey player and nothing more, as if nothing else really mattered. I'm sure there are other hockey parents like that but Zacha Sr. seems to have upgraded it on a much higher level. Only his conflicts with the hockey association/coaches/former clubs make him look like Carl Lindros on steroids. The kid has so much pressure on his shoulders, and it's entirely his father's fault. As for his education (or lack thereof), I feel somewhat embarassed that such a thing is even legal in the Czech Rebublic. He pulled him him out of school when, at 15?

Brett Hulls father wasn't that great to him either. Would you have avoided him?

For whatever reason Video cut out on the last video before he scored the 5th goal. He also crushs a latvian player cutting to the net in the last video.

His size, speed, hands and shot are all elite tools.

For me this is the best pro prospect outside of McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin, Marner. Yes I actually like him more then Strome.

Yep.
I think many of the people who dont like Zacha just looked at his PPG in the OHL this season. Sure it was somewhat underwhelming but he dealt with a few issues that made it a difficult season.

He has the skillset/upside to be the best player in this draft not named McDavid/Eichel. That doesnt mean he will reach it but his ceiling is massive.

Couple awesome goals. Like you said, he has some incredible tools: hands, skating, shot, physicality in a 6'3 frame.

Honestly there should be a law that says all players regardless of league should either have a high school education or equivalent if they want to play in the NHL.

Why?

A) It's hockey. I don't care if the guy gets confused trying to follow Elmo's World, if he can skate like the wind, hit, shoot, and follow a system, sign him up.

B) I seriously hope you don't have stock in any Oil companies if you feel this way. You'd be appalled to find out the education level of some of the upper management in certain companies.

I think with some of the problems we are seeing arising with players attempting to transition away from hockey it needs to be mandatory. Especially outside of the NHL, there are 30 year olds riding on a bus around in lesser leagues earning a meagre salary with a spotty education and really no opportunities outside of hockey. These guys, NHL or not, need to be better prepared for life after hockey. Otherwise we are going to see more tragedies.

I agree that these players should at least be completing high school or an education equal to that but you can't force these people. They're busy chasing their dreams and making decent money along the way. There's worse things that could be happening to them. At least they're building some sort of connections and making coin in the meantime.

They should take advantage and get educated, but I don't think its right for the NHL to mandate they have an education I also don't think it will make a difference, look at the NFL

If Marner is gone by 4 and knowing that Leaf fans wanted Marner, would they risk taking Zacha instead of Strome for the higher upside?

How does he have higher upside than Strome? Where did this misconception of Strome being a **** player spring from?

Nothing about Strome. Its about Zacha going up. Mediocre statistical season but a whole lot of physical tools to explode. Like the bunch of people seeing him as a "steal" and that he hasn't adjusted to NA rinks as well yet. If he is only a PPG and mediocre now and is still rated in top 10 but if he had a "good" season that would spring him into the top 5 then and likely competing against Marner/Strome in that slot.

Theres quite a few people in here saying they would take him over Strome already. Would the Leafs?

I'm a Leafs fan and I have said numerous times I would take Zacha over Strome.

Honestly I think if Marner goes 3rd then the Leafs probably grab Hanifin and run with it. A top forward is always appealing, but they need help everywhere.

I think guys like Zacha and Barzal will be in the discussion with Strome. But personally I think it'd be between Hanifin and Strome at the end of the day. But who knows :).

If Zacha doesn't get picked before 13th...everyone in the future is going to be pissed when the Kings grab him and he becomes another top player like Kopitar.

I see this draft falling just like 2005...huge top name in Crosby(McDavid) with an above average set of prospects, and the Kings stealing a guy that should go top 10 like Kopitar(Zacha).

Hanifin is becoming criminally underrated. He's a Seth Jones/Aaron Ekblad type defenseman. Couldn't argue with taking Strome either. Taking Zacha over either is a firing offense.

There are a lot of people saying things like that. It's because of the armchair scouts watching a couple poor performances by Strome in the playoffs and dropping him at a rapid pace, one or two spots per bad game lol. Started with Marner, then moved onto Barzal, and now Zacha. At this rate, Strome won't be in the first round for these armchair scouts anymore!

You're taking this very personally.

I just find it funny if anything. Sure he could drop, but scouts have seen Strome play for years and have had him firmly in the top 5 and aren't going to be swayed too much by such a small sample size like fans would.

I didn't actually say anything about Strome dropping. I haven't watched his playoff game either so I didn't comment.

What I was commenting is Zacha improving and given that more than a few people see hidden top 5 potential in him.

This is about Zacha climbing to Strome level, not him falling to Zacha level.

Love that first goal. Stick handles in traffic then lets go of a laser shot with an equally quick release.

Call me crazy, but...I think this kid could go as high as 4th overall.

Kyle Dubas name dropped him in terms of the high end talent available in the top 5, and in terms of tools, no player compares (outside of McEichel). If a team falls in love with him, him going that early is very imaginable.
