I thought he'd struggle a lot more in the AHL @ 18. Usually an issue for smaller players, let alone ones that need to work on skating, but he's just doing what he always does, out IQ them.

17 points in 24 games in his d+1 is very promising.

Was playing a lot of third line minutes to start the year.

These long AHL breaks suck though

Thank god hes in the AHL for this year.
If/when the OHL opens for next season, does he have to go back there if he doesn't make the Jets, or can he be sent to the AHL now that he has played a season there? I'm not sure of the rules since a situation like this (cancelled ohl season) is unprecidented.

As of right now he’d have to go back to the OHL next year, I hope they make some kind of rule that each team can have 1 or 2 players that are exempt from the CHL-NHL agreement because it seems kind of stupid to send a kid back to the OHL who was close to a ppg in the AHL as an 18 year old

The best thing for Cole and other D+1, D+2 players from OHL is that they are developing in the AHL and learning Pro Systems. Cole has really improved his defensive game, adapting to C, and playing against bigger, stronger players. This upcoming season he should concentrate on skating, endurance and strength. The rest of his game is solid with tremendous offensive upside.
As far as next year the OHL is a step backwards. Either the Jets or Europe as of right now are his options. With a solid rest of the season and a successful training program he just might crack the Jets lineup?

I think they will try and keep him with the Jets, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t even be allowed in Europe unless the OHL was canceled again. When you sign an OHL contract it locks you in with that team until you’re either in the NHL or 20 years old. Otherwise NHL teams would just send all their top CHL prospects over to Europe to play pro

I feel at the very least, they should make an exemption for OHL guys that played in the AHL all year this year. Even though he likely isn't ready to be a regular nhler next year and get sporadic playing time, it's certainly the superior option to having him go down a level by returning to the OHL from AHL competition, its just absurd to think that multiple players who have demonstrated that they belong in the AHL will be stuck going back to the O next year.

Ok.. but yikes ..how bad is the A this season if an 18 yrold, certainly not known for his open ice speed , can go coast?! That D he blows by , looks to be in need of some serious pivot work..lol

The Canadian division this season looks absolutely dreadful from the 4+ games I've seen. ECHL defense with very few elite forwards except Caufield (but he got called up). Lots of tweeners are on the taxi squad of teams and goaltending has been mediocre AHL league-wide from my viewings.

The Pacific division is more stacked (Reign have 1st and 2nd round picks playing like Byfield/Kupari/Turcotte/Kaliyev/Andersson/Durzi, Gulls have Zegras/Drysdale/Perrault/Carrick/DeLeo/Poturalski and an elite goalie in Dostal, Condors have vets - Cracknell/Malone/Gravel/Griffin/Stanton and the top line in the AHL, Silver Knights have Jurco, Cody Glass, Dougan, and best goalie in the AHL). Stockton used to have a stacked lineup with Dube/Mangipane/Kylington/Davidson/Quine/vets but not this season.

It's no surprise M.Bunting on the Roadrunners is doing so well in the NHL because he was near the top of the AHL in scoring. Same with Zegras.

That had little to do with open ice speed. They gave him the zone entry, and somehow the defender didn't cut his angle off at all when he came in from a very wide angle. Not to disrespect Perfetti, I like him a lot as a prospect. But, how that was even allowed to transpire was a mess defensively. Even McDavid rarely can cut in from that wide an angle without being cut-off.

I'll also chime in that the Jets are developing him as a center and not as a LW which he played mostly in the OHL.

He's made incredible strides in his face off ability since the beginning of the year and he already exhibits really sound positional awareness without the puck in the dzone and NZ. He is terrific on zone exits and entries and he is also surprisingly good at winning the puck off of pro players given where he is at in his physical development.

He's just a very smart player all over the ice and reads the play a step ahead of most everyone on the ice.

The offensive skill speaks for itself, just thought I'd chime in on some other parts of his game.

It will be up to him. If works hard on his skating and strength this summer there will be an open spot in the top 6 that he can compete for. I doubt the Jets bring back Stastney.

When I first saw the highlight I assumed that was a forward trapped on defence because it had that vibe. I have been really happy with Perfetti’s arc of progression
this season but that play was poor defending with a nice conversion on the opportunity.

There's still a part of me that would prefer Perfetti to Raymond. (Don't tell the Wings board)

I don't know if Perfetti is going to be better than Raymond, but he's looking more impressive right now for sure. I'm not sure how much of it is opportunity (or lack thereof in Raymond's case) and how much of it is the diluted talent pool in the AHL this year.

That looked like a beer league. Perfetti wasn't even skating fast. Weird.

That was the choice for a lot of the board at the time, so I don't think it is strange. I preferred Raymond, but I was fine with Perfetti at four, he has that kind of talent. A true duel-threat guy in terms of passer and scorer. He is a dynamic offensive talent and his hockey IQ is through the roof in my opinion.
