C Leo Carlsson (2023, 2nd, ANA)

Wouldn't draft him because of his compulsive lying

He can not bench 330 with that build, all the kids his age that could do 300+ I played football with were much more built
This might have been lost in translation, he might have meant deadlift, although I wouldn’t even be sure he can do that much there either

Look at the recent first picks Jarmo made. He wants kids promoted ASAP. Johnson the only one because he wanted to go back to UM to win a title. But Chinakhov, Jiricek, Sillinger, Texier, PLD all 6’1+ and in the NHL within two years.

Have a hard time believing JK and VS take the smaller American going to BC than the bigger Euro ready to step in.

Not really, he is going for the bias MVP
Where's the bias? I think Will Smith is the 3rd best player in this class and it seems the consensus among actual nhl scouts is the same.

Strict scrutiny of prospects =/ bias

Agreed. Carlsson was very impressive playing in a top league against men. He is a smooth skater who will fill out around 6-4, 115 like Anze Kopitar. He's a beast in all areas of the ice and might have the best passing mitts in the draft, which is perfect for Columbus who has shooters in Laine, Marchenko, etc. They already have some slippery finesse players in Gaudreau and Johnson.

Stylistically, Carlsson is in the Kopitar, Barkov, Backstrom mold and Smith is in the Marner, Gaudreau, Keller mold. Both have enormous offensive upside.

6'4 225-230, like Kopitar/Getzlaf/Thornton

The Carlsson type have reached the stanley cup and have won the cups. I don't see Marner type of player winning the stanley cup. They will be great in the season.

I could see Thor/kopi but Getzlaf was a physical monster who played a psycho l physical game and would fight anyone carlsson doesn’t have any of that in his game
Ironically I would take Thornton in a fight against Getzlaf

He said he didn't see Marner types winning the cup. Kane is a Marner type, and has won 3.

For the record I have Carlsson >> Smith.
Right, but they were comparing Smith to Marner.

There aren't many Marner type centers who have led their team to cups was the point.

Brayden Point shares a lot of similarities with Marner. Kuznetsov too.

Jack Hughes is a C and I don't think anyone would argue you can't win with him as your 1C.

I don't think Smith will be near the same level of any of these guys. I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up as a winger.

Smith plays like neither of them.

Carlsson is a every Gm’s dream prospect

I didn't realize he played center. Oh wait, he was centered by a player in basically the exact mold of Carlsson.
By 2013 Quenneville was splitting them up and Kane was centered by such HHOHers as Mochal Handzus, Dave Bolland and Antoine Vermette.

Patrick Kane has 3 cups and a Conn Smythe....

And Nikita Kucherov has 2 cups and one of the most prolific playoff scorer ever. Neither players are bigger/taller than Marner.

And Stamkos/Point weren't exactly big guys either by NHL standards

*Not arguing Smith over Carlsson, but just saying - you don't need to be 6'4 to be a key cog in winning Cups.
