WHL scoring transfers better to the NHL according to most studies. Iain Fyffe of Hockey Abstract concluded that in projecting players the OHL graded out at 1.1, the WHL at 1.05 and the QMJHL at .95.there is zero evidence that the WHL is better then the Q.
That would also dramatically increase the amount of ice-time and high-opportunity situations a player would play in. Plus, players are expected to make sizable leaps between 16 and 17 if they are projected as first rounders.I think people are looking at his raw numbers too much when they say he hasnt improved from year to year. Year to year makes a huge difference in team quality in junior. Veleno went from about the 6th best offensive player on st Johns last year to the best htis year. Team quality took a hit and so his raw numbers didnt change much, but his relative numbers did.
Now that hes on a stacked team, hes producing with people to play with. I dont think hes necessarily a top 10 guy (if he stays this productive he may slide back up there though) but if I was a team with 2 firsts or picking aywhere after 15 I dont think I would be scared to draft him

Kucherov,Mackinon,Voracek,Crosby,Giroux and Marchessault are all in the top 20 in scoring and former Q players while not a single player from the W is on that list.WHL scoring transfers better to the NHL according to most studies. That doesn't mean it transfers better. You don't just take a snapshot of the league at a random time and think that makes it accurate. Historically WHL scoring transfers better. Those numbers aren't picked out of thin air, they are done by studying the success rate of players from each league. I mean, it also evaluates all the guys who score at extremely high-rates and go on to be nothing.Kucherov,Mackinon,Voracek,Crosby,Giroux and Marchessault are all in the top 20 in scoring and former Q players while not a single player from the W is on that list.
I would never say that. Even if you adjust for league and age Crosby blows everyone out the water not named Patrick Kane or Connor McDavid. Guys like MacKinnon and Drouin have also placed fairly high in recent years.Yes you had to be a clown to think in 2005 to think that Gilbert brûle will be a better NHL player than Crosby.....and they were a lot of clowns from the west back then.
Lemieux was never cut from the junior team. He chose not to play for them at 18.Remember when Lemieux was cut from Canada's junior team because he was not good enough in his own zone..... outside of Quebec everyone were agree with this decision....by far the worst decision in history.
He was on the team as a 17 year old.He was cut the year before by Dave king...look his stats that year too.
As pointed out previously. This can't solely be attributed to Veleno. They lost 2 key Powerplay guys for the WJC, and they traded Hardie on top of it.I love stats as much as the next guy, but you have to factor in Veleno's size for a center, his 200-foot game and his speed. Lots of guys can put up points, but Veleno is making fantastic plays with sound decision making and in all three zones.
Drummondville's PP pct skyrocketed four full points in only 16 games since Veleno arrived. Meanwhile, Saint John's PP has dropped almost 5 points since he left. And we're deep enough into the season where these sample sizes matter.
The league comparison is hogwash. It's a poor WHL crop anyway. Veleno is the kind of prospect who would produce anywhere against his age group.
Still, I see no reason to ever rank him ahead of Zadina, whose pre-draft resume is better than Hischier's.

A 37 powerplay sample is literally nothing, and prone to a bunch of statistical noise at that point. Even the best powerplays can run cold over 12 games.Hardie had one PPG in his last 30 games on Saint John. What a difference maker.
Salda and Safin have played in 12 games since the WJC. Saint John's PP in that span is 4-for-37 (10.8%).
Think it's time we can just admit that Saint John's and Drummondville's power play are much better when they have Veleno running it.
