I was surprised of the backlash that came from him getting exceptional status. Every time I watched him I was impressed and always felt that he just approached the game in a manner ahead of his age. He obviously has tons of skill but he has the Q-ready size and a willingness to learn. I think he will be a valuable piece to this SJ team almost right out of the gate and he'll surprise a lot of people.

Can't wait to see him play live again.

Wow Sea Dogs will have helllllllll of a team the upcoming season!

N.Noel – S.Dove-McFalls – S.Smallman
A.Marsh – J.Veleno – M.Joseph
B.Imama – M.Highmore – S.Povorozniouk
J.Tessier - M.Green - D.Del Paggio

T.Chabot – J.Zboril
L.Green – O.Felixson
B.Webster - A Bateman

...and the year after.

So what's a reasonable expectation for Veleno for the upcoming season, I'm thinking somewhere in the .5 - .6 ppg range maybe 15g 25A? I don't think anyone is really expecting McDavid or Tavares like underage seasons and I don't believe he's on that level, but Saint John is gonna have a good team this year so maybe 40 points and hopefully 70 or so (around ppg) for next year. I think that would be pretty decent for him.

I'd predict 45 points maximum. We have to remind us that he is a 15 year old player and, I know he is really talented, but still got granted his exceptionnal status to avoid losing him to the NCAA path...

If he plays on the 2nd line/pp wave, he should be able to hit the 50 points mark, especially on that stacked team. Their defense is amazing!!

How does this kid compare to other elite Q 16 year old players of recent years such as Drouin and Mackinnon? The tone of this thread seems to be he was undeserving of his exceptional status and is closer to Sean Day then Tavares, Ekblad and McDavid.

Mem Cup contender with a goalie.

Saw Him play at a tourney in Mass recently. Was very impressive, but he just didn't seem completely into it. Shawn Kennedy a 2015 Mooseheads draft pick was the best player on the ice in the game I saw. Veleno is obviously more talented from everything that I've seen, but Kennedy has been very good as well.In fairness to Veleno, Kennedy is 2017 draft eligible.

Yes. He's not McDavid, probably a Drouin.

Much better than Drouin was at the same age, but Drouin hit a growth spurt a bit later and took massive strides at 15 and 16 to get to where he was in his draft season.

Veleno is probably closer to MacKinnon in terms to skill than Drouin at the same age. Not comparing playing styles.

I would agree there on both. I find Joey isn't as flashy to be honest.
