A year? Isn't Matthews like 3 days too young to be in this draft? Why? Is the September 15 cut off used at other levels?

Thanks in advance
July-August is more or less the cutoff in Minnesota at least. Chances are Eichel has played one more year of hockey, but kids start at different ages, play up, etc. so age discussions should be taken with a grain of salt no matter which players are being discussed.

Both are late b-day's so its about a year. Matthews has some of the best hands on a big guy I've ever see and he has Eichel beat there imo. From the little I have seen, he seems to be the more committed two-way player as well.

Eichel's speed may very well keep him ahead though, it is incredible and a super game breaking quality of his game.

Matthews did have 3 points in 5 games in his predraft season at the WJ, a tournament dominated by 19 year olds. Maybe a bit disappointing given people's saying he is an equal to Eichel, but the entire US team kinda stunk it up

Eichel with an assist on the GWG in OT for BU. He took a shot from the point, that was saved, but his teammate was right there on the doorstep put the rebound home.

I didn't watch the whole game, just OT. Sounded like he had an average game. The primary assist on the GWG was his only point in the game, but his impact is really noticeable at this level, especially that last shift that resulted in the GWG.

Eichel wasn't on the puck much in the first two periods and was livelier, but still below average, in the third with passes to no one and a saved breakaway. Here's the assist on the OT GWG:

I only watched the last two periods and OT but it was probably the worst game I have seen from him at the College level. He was still a threat but tried to do too much especially early on. That's going to be the biggest thing he will learn is balancing some of the burden. No different than what happened at the WJC and no different than what McDavid will go through.

What amazes me about players as talented as Eichel is that they can absolutely dominate a game/series (beanpot) and only get like 2 points.

Its incredible. I really have fallen in love with him and hope Buffalo can get him.

John Shannon is arguing that if the Oilers pick at #2 overall they should trade the pick because they don't need Eichel. Ugh, this hurts to watch.

Of course he is, I am a huge Strome fan. But ever since that 6 point night things have gotten out of hand, he isn't a 10th the player Jack Eichel is.

Some moron who covers the Leafs tweeted right after Eichel won the HE "talked to someone who thinks Eichel will go 3rd" or something like that.

I watched the whole game. Lyon was the best goalie in the NCAA and Yale plays a suffocating game. The 40+ shots is a testament to BU's strength. Eichel was neutralized but it was obviously a focus.

Eichel had a breakaway but was stopped. Won 16 draws. The GW assist - he's a center covering the Right point on a cycle.

Think about that for a second.

He then goes on to suggest the Oiler's pick Strome because he is a center. WTF is that guy smoking?:help:

You know what's funny? He went from saying Strome is going to be a good NHL player and possible top 5 pick before that Niagara game to saying "Strome is going top 3" after his six point night.

Yale plays the exact style that can neutralize Eichel at this point in his career. Hit him every chance you get and take away his time and space. It worked in the WJC, and he got frustrated and tried to do it all himself and made too many fancy moves.

He'll learn to play through that as time goes on, but right now that's the best way to defend him.

i saw the 2nd half of todays BU yale game. on eichels breakaway it didnt even look like he tried to skate hard/fast on the play. he seemingly took like 3 long strides to cover half the ice and coasted in on the goalie despite the back pressure. tried to go backhand and slide it through the goalies legs but the goalie didnt give much to shoot at on the play and stopped it with his right leg.

I can't believe this guy is on the panel. AFAIK, his entire career until now was as a PRODUCER for hockey broadcasts. He's never worked in the sport, or as a reporter, or any other role that would qualify him to be a live analyst. So basically he just used his executive producer role to weasel his face onto TV. What a shameless tool.

Jesus these Rogers clowns. I didn't expect them to do a good job since it's basically a bunch of telecom execs now overseeing a media business, but it's kind of mind boggling just how awful it is.

He started off jokingly saying that the Oilers should take anyone but McDavid. Then what makes this worse is that he thinks they should trade it to get Strome because Strome is a center. Then he and Armstrong decide that the real need is a goalie so they should trade Eichel to the 4th place team (who might that be in this scenario?...hmmm) for Strome and a goalie. I can see it now

To Torornto: Eichel, Pittsburgh's 1st

To Edmonto: Strome and Reimer

which is very generous since we have already been told by Dreger that the Leafs probably would not trade Reimer straight up for Yakupov, and of course Strome is a bigger need than the power forward Eichel.

This is not just an issue for the Oilers but is a huge problem in general. Hockey coverage has devolved to the point where the stuff that gets said is so off the wall it is hard to imagine. But it propagates to the point that insanity becomes truth. The Dreger comment above is of course out of context but it shows how little real thought goes into what is said about players that these guys tend to know almost nothing about. (Dreger and the eastern media have repeatedly challenged Yaks character, something that this kid really has in spades). I am convinced that this is why we see so many ridiculous posts on these boards. People hear this stuff over and over an without the benefit of first-hand exposure it becomes fact.

In case it is not clear, as unlikely as it looks to be right now if the Oilers did get the #2 pick they would be thrilled to get a kid like Eichel. He is an absolutely tremendous young hockey player.
