26. If nothing else, Jack Eichel is showing the upcoming season will not be a Connor McDavid Calder coronation. He’s going to make this a race. In his first preseason game, Eichel directed Zemgus Girgensons and Matt Moulson into position as he needed them. Sometimes, rookies do that and eyes roll. One player said that wasn’t the case here.

“He knows what he’s doing and how to handle it.â€

I noticed that confidence as well, he doesn't have the timidness of most rookies, including McDavid. He's as confident as he's always been with the puck, and seems willing and able to lead his teammates. I think that's a big factor in why he outplayed McDavid in preseason.

Eichel seems to be a natural leader, but I didn't always have that opinion of him. However, after hearing the comments from his coaches in NCAA and international competition, and the visible leadership he's already displayed in preseason play, I'd guess we'll see a letter on his sweater sooner rather than later.

Wooot intangibles!!!

Toew's days as cpt. intangible are numbered!

On a more serious note I like how confident he is at his skills. Hes got that swagger to be a star.

How good is Eichel defensively?? Can he be relied as a two way force like Johansen?

It looks like he's tracking that way but it's hard to say where he's at right now. He was at times very good defensively at BU but was not consistent. At the World Championship I thought he looked strong defensively against men, including some top NHLers, but again lacked consistency with it. In preseason he was consistently strong defensively/away from the puck. After the first game Bylsma said that of the 17ish games he'd seen Eichel play in person*, that was the best he'd been away from the puck. He continued to feel the same way about Jack's off-puck play as camp went on. Bylsma said he'd told Jack he'd have to step up at this level and that he so far had.

In short, I think he will be fairly solid defensively as a rookie, with some mistakes to iron out. In time, he, like McDavid, can absolutely be an elite two-way player. With his plus size, long stick, and speed he can really cause problems defensively in all three zones.

i think eichel has high end defensive ability if he keeps his effort level running. hes too strong and too good a skater with too much hockey iq not to be.

Pft; only Canadians are allowed to have intangibles.

Imagine being the opposing second line going up against kane - eichel - reinhart.... the IQ of eichel+reinhart is insane. this is going to be a fun combination to watch!

Meh.

Maybe in a year or two. I'd much rather have Girgensons in place of Reinhart for now.
