Eichel wont be Mario, but you can sort of argue their qualities are similar. Big long strong stride, great hands and great shot. Of course Eichel will never have the wow factor of Mario and will never score at the same clip as him. But there will be many times throughout his career where Eichel will single handidly dominate games the way Mario did, Mario just did it in almost every game

Not defensive...I object to the whole narrative you present as a false one and lacking factual clarity. So...clueless.

I think the majority of people that form this opinion are the ones that only saw him play in the world junior. He underperformed in some games. I doubt many of those posters saw him play regularly with BU

Yup. The ones that counted.

I understand the love for this kid from Sabres fans and U.S. Hockey supports - you've waited a LONG time. Having said that, you are setting yourselves up for a LOT of grief if this kid isn't great. A poster wrote me and said he's waiting to come down on posters like the wrath of God if Eichel doesn't live up to all the bragging - and right now, no one could. You might want to tone it down and hope he exceeds your expectations.

Well Thank God we have you and this other fella here trying to save us.

:handclap:

I love you, KevyD

The people who start laughing that Eichel "hasn't lived up to all the bragging" a month after he starts playing won't be applying the same standard to Connor McDavid, I can promise you that.

That's what we're here for.

Seriously tho, what is the downside to toning it down? If you tone it down and he exceeds, you can say, "Wow, he's even better that we thought".

Thanks! :)

What are you talking about? Do YOU even know?

The expectations for McDavid, playing in Canada, will be even higher than anything Eichel ever faces. He is going to be playing in a Hockey insane market, and the NHL's SMALLEST, where he won't be able to scratch his butt without it appearing in the news. He also has to live up to all the Sid comparisons.

And, for the record, I have suggested McDavid fans tone it down as well.

Anyway guys, do what you want. You're the ones who have to live with the grief if you're wrong.

Good thing you've taken it upon yourself to set us straight, we could really stand to benefit from your objectivity on the matter.

He's definitely facing an uphill battle, having played last season, in your own words, in a "glorified beer league". And surely you'll apply the same standards to McDavid and any "bragging" or praise that surrounds him. Right?

You're welcome.

I will. I have.

These kids are 18 going into a League where everyone is very good. People who expect them to set the NHL on fire are kidding themselves. Again, why not tone it down and let them exceed your expectations?

For those thinking that Eichel is the greatest thing since the Phoebe Cates red bikini scene in Fast Times, he's not. Nothing is that good... not even McDavid.

;)

I'll always remember that scene. :)

You're acting like treating a prospect like Eichel as a potential franchise center is some radical new thing. Based on his tools and accomplishments thus far..he should be.

I'm certainly not sitting here eagerly waiting for a player not to live up to internet hype so I can start mocking people.

And, no - people here aren't going to start complaining if McDavid doesn't live up to Sid comparisons immediately - they're going to continue making to comparisons while insisting it's too early to make any judgement.

That's not how expectations work. If I believe Eichel is going to score 80 points this season, "toning it down" means I say on here that I think he'll score 60, but I'm still expecting him to score 80.

Let people think what they want, there isn't actually that much grief involved in being wrong. Plus, if you're high expectations are right, than you'll feel even more gratified.

They're comparing him to Mario...

He has a lot of Mario's qualities. The comparison is fine.

If they think he's going to be as good as Mario..that is another thing and quite the wishful thinking.

But even then that sentiment is rare...and you're using the views of a few who go overboard and combat it with your own hyperbole. Pretty lame.

Exactly. My dad, who is obviously old enough to remember Gretzky, has compared McDavid to Gretzky. He's not expecting him to be Gretzky (or maybe he is, I don't know), but when you're talking about two of the best prospects to come around in a long time, people are going to compare them to the greats.
