sorry bro, keep fighting the good fight though

Not that he has bad numbers, but wouldn't you hope to see some offensive progression throughout his years in junior?

Being PPG in the Q is nothing, the guy can't even attain PPG status and its his 3rd year. Its Pathetic

In Gauthiers draft year he was near PPG and I was expecting him to get about 80points his 2nd year and maybe get close to 90 his 3rd year but instead the kid just leveled off at around 60 points.

Would of easily taken Burakovsky/Shinkaruk /Theodore/Dano etc. ahead of this guy.

Thankfully the leafs are shifting their draft focus and getting high-skilled players now, so no more safe picks that amounts to nothing -- like damn Gauthier.

The amount of people who crap all over this guy is incredible. I hope he's a great NHL player and not even because he's a leafs prospect, I just wanna see this thread bumped in a few years so all these posters who just look at hockeydb and form an opinion can eat their words.

You realize if he was actually playing well we would see the equal and opposite reaction from Leafs fans. It goes both ways. I'm amazed how so many people from both sides fail to understand this.

Future David Steckel with better skating
That's like me saying Connor McDavid is the next Robbie Schremp, with better skating.

David Steckel was such a bad skater that he couldn't play in the NHL, meanwhile Gauthier's best asset is his skating.

Technically he did, sure his numbers didn't rise but his defensive responsibilities did. As a rookie with little defensive responsibility he had much more offensive opportunities than he has this season meaning his numbers are more impressive now than they were in his rookie season despite not actually rising. Regardless his defensive game is really incredible, he reminds me of a Bergeron without the offence and we've seen his importance in the playoffs even when he's not on the scoresheet. Gauthier will always be that player more valuable than his position in the depth chart

This is a joke, right??

This thread is painful to read.

Yep lets judge a defensive forward/face off specialist's ability to be an NHL player on his average offensive numbers. Quite the logic.

If you want to argue the validity of taking a bottom 6 player in the 1st round that's fine, but personally I'm quite happy with him. We haven't had a reliable shut down centre who can win draws in years. So that's where I hope he keeps developing.

So winning WJC gold, Presidents trophy and playing a key defensive role is not playing well?

So sad that posters expect every draft pick to put up points. Gauthier was drafted as a big, defensive center that can win draws -- and that's exactly what he is.

He didn't make the WJC team over MDC because he scores. He made it because he is one of the best defensive players in junior hockey.

All anyone needs to do is take a look at LA to see the importance of these types of players.

Yeah, we all get it -- he isn't Tyler Sequin -- but he is going to be a key piece on a winning team moving forward.
