I think you misunderstood his post, I think he was talking about being good value for a mid-late 1st. Not the most valuable player in the draft.

Rookie forward Frederik Gauthier of the Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is expected to miss two weeks while recovering from a broken jaw.

Incredible game tonight between Rimouski and Baie-Comeau, currently 4-4 on OT. Zykov tied it @ 19:59 of the 3rd.

Gauthier 1g, 2a, 3pts, +3. First game I seen him take the initiative in creating plays - scored an incredibly impressive short-handed goal - if (and its a big if) he plays like tonight he is top 10 but he has to do it consistently.

Samuel Morin is starting to impress me as well - his skating appears to be better and he scored a beauty goal as well.

Update: Baie-Comeau 5 Rimouski 4. Baie-Comeau wins on a shootout out goal by Valentin Zykov.

I watched the game as well. Gauthier just makes a ton of smart plays. Great shot on the first goal I believe to create the rebound.

I've always thought his agility for his size was probably the most intriguing thing about him.

With that said, I was never a huge fan of Veilleux. I didn't think he showed a consistent level of effort on the ice and I think that reflected in his conditioning, which then reflected in his injuries and his skating.

I don't see similar concerns with Gauthier.

I don't really like making player comparisons (I don't watch Hanzal or Handzus enough to make that call). I can see why people might reference Couturier though.

Gauthier is a two way player and a smart one at that. I actually think he sacrifices a bit in offensive efficiency to be more responsible in his own end. The advantage there is I think he's very projectable, he could fill many different roles in a lineup.

Not really. He has pretty much been around that 1.1-1.2 point per game range all season.

No, he won't go top 10. 19 goals not much offense to go that high. I see Montreal taking him if they draft 20th or later, but if they draft top 15 I see them going more offense. Somebody like Wennberg or Zykov.

In which case, they'd take the lesser player, so it's probably not the way to go.

Pouliot is good comparsion. Offense isn't there. Gauthier more successful than him probably as superior defense. I knew Pouliot wouldn't score like scouts were saying. Same as '08 knew Deschamps wasn't going to be what everybody was predicting.

Neither will be offensive player in NHL despite their high draft ranking. Just a little leg work. If you want to see how a player offense translates to NHL, compare them to previous similar players in recent drafts. I've done this for years, there are exceptions to the rule, but it is pretty accurate. Injuries, size, speed, what team drafts a player play a role. But averaged out gives good idea how much they will score.

I give the draft a few years to judge previous players a little, they need a few years to develop.

Numbers say Voracek should score better. But forwards around 1.1 PPG, gone on to be bottom 6 forwards, or fringe NHLers. Pouliot, Caron, Picard.

With his size and good defensive skills Gauthier will go on to good career. But as 3rd line two-way center with great size, 40-45 pts in NHL on average year. If he never had great size and defense Gauthier would be non-draft to me.
