How are Oilers fans STILL so cocky? They've sucked for so long, and one player is not going to turn this team around. We've gone through this 3 times before, and they still suck. Their goaltending and defense STILL suck. They are going nowhere. They are no more talented offensively than Colorado or Dallas, and both Colorado and Dallas have better defense, and Colorado has better D and goaltending. Neither Dallas nor Colorado have really put it all together yet, but at least their management seems to have a plan in place. High skilled forwards are nice, but one guy doesn't fix all their problems overnight.

How are we cocky? We said we would do this if we won. All we heard all year was how we didn't deserve it and that he should pull a Lindros if we drafted him.

Fans such as yourself are to blame for how we are acting. There are so many bitter posters so we are replying how we said he would.

This isn't cockiness, this is how we cope with the massive bash fest we are seeing right now.

Yes, you're right, his agent, Bobby Orr, who has another client on the Oilers (who he constantly gives advice on how to be a better pro,) is going to advise him to not report.
:shakehead

Orr will make a lot more money if Conner goes to a better organization and has success.

Am I the only one almost convinced that he will demand a trade before going into the miserable organization which is the Oilers?

You probably are not the only one. Which will make it even sweeter when he is on the roster opening night.

This. One player doesn't turn arguably the worst run organization in NHL history, into a playoff team. It will take some shrewd moves to get Edmonton to that level, and with the management that they currently have, that's highly unlikely. McDavid will be the Kovalchuk to his Atlanta Thrashers.

Sabres have a far better project core than the Oilers and Eichel will end up
with a better career than McDavid. Eichel will also win the Stanley Cup.
I don't see McDavid in Edmonton very long and will end up on the Leafs within 5 seasons.

So Buffalo tanks hard and fans are all of a sudden angry that McDavid went to a team that didn't actually tank?

Buffalo's players have proven even less than the Oilers young prospects have.

I don't like how people go from saying how insanely good he's gonna be, to saying he is going to bust. You just look childish at this point.

Comment of the day here how is it it if he ended up on your team he is the next crosby and gonna be the greatest talent but on the oilers will bust sounds like some people are just a tab bit sour

Cool. Who else "deserved" McDavid?

Let me guess, everyone else right. It was a lottery and the Oilers won fairly.

We will continue to laugh at the salty posters because of all of these ridiculous comments.

really... You'd take I quit Evander Kane over Hall, Girgensons over Nugent Hopkins, Ennis over Eberle, Moulson over Yak... :help: Oh and if you want to go with Reinhart, Drai had a better ppg average playing less minutes.

Looking at their goalies. Two worst goaltending teams in the league pretty interchangeable.

On D outside of Bogo, I think right now Risto and Klefa are pretty interchangable with Risto having more upside. I look at Nurse and Zedorov being Nurse has a higher upside so call it a wash. After that clearly Buffalo has the upper hand. However to say the Sabres have a far better core is a joke.

The NHL is different today. Not only do you need quality goaltending to win, you also need elite, puck-moving defensemen that can play big minutes. Also, since there's a salary cap, you need to be able to draft and develop well to retool your contending team as other players leave. The window to win is very small nowadays.

The only thing that is correct in that statement is that the window to winning is smaller today.

Everything else you mention - quality goaltending, elite, puck-moving defensemen that can play big minutes, solid drafting and development have been required to win in every single season of the NHL. Are you suggesting otherwise?

This HF meme that today's game is "so unique" is based on willing ignorance of the past (including the recent past). Sure the game has evolved (and devolved in other ways). But not to the exaggerated extreme some portray.

Anyway, back to the thread question, since the post I responded to has NOTHING to do with whether or not McDavid becomes a special NHLer: If a player needs to step into a perfect environment in order to be generational, then he isn't. That's not a commentary on McDavid, who undoubtedly will shine, though to what extent no one knows with certainty. It's a commentary on how some people misuse, overuse and devalue clichés.

As in: shine in Juniors and you are labeled "a generational player"...until you are drafted by the Oilers, then suddenly you aren't.

Embarrassing "logic".

Well, the talent will always be there. But people will start to question him when he can't drag his ****** team any further than the first round.

But then he'll leave when he's 25 and win and people will realize the talent he is.

This topic is so childish! McDavid in Edmonton means end of a decade of darkness, not end of talent

I completely agree here. Whether or not the general hockey fan base acknowledges this or not, Edmonton needed a McDavid or Eichel type of player. I'm happy for Edmonton's fan base.
And this coming from a Buffalo born and bred hockey fanatic.
Did Buffalo need a McDacid or Eichel type of player? Sure, and they got one in Eichel.

Markets such as Buffalo and Edmonton should be patting one another on the back, hand shaking with a congrats hug.

McDavid and Eicgel will both do fine. I'm hoping we meet multiple times in the finals for some skilled, awe-inspiring, competitive hockey as these years progress.

So congrats to Edmonton. May this draft be the one that both lifts you up out of the rebuild and keeps your talent pool coffers full for seasons to come.

Goaltending is a question, Buffalo has a good pool of prospect net minders, more so than Edmonton right now, but their prospects.
On D, Buffalo is much deeper than Edmonton. Klef is no Risto. Pysyk leads a very good pool for Buffalo.

I didn't think Buffalo really deserved it, either. Definitely not Toronto, LA, Boston, and a couple of other teams. Edmonton was at the top of that list, because they've pissed away numerous picks and not improved a lick. They need to get their house in order before they get any more help.

I really thought Arizona deserved him. For all the riches Edmonton has gotten through the draft, Arizona has gotten almost none. It would have been great for them to land him. and probably a boost for the league as whole, because there isn't much to cheer for in Arizona right now.

Remind me, how many number one picks has Edmonton ruined?

So Hall and RNH were ruined? Yeah, what awful players they are.
Yakupov just played his 3rd season, 2.5 really with the lockout shortened season. Too early to tell with him.

The #1 picks aren't the problem, no defense, poor goaltending and the endless carousel of coaching was/is the problem but keep believing that the #1 picks are busts and that McDavid will be McDaigle. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
