But why? What would it take for someone to reach generational status in your eyes? McDavid has elite vision, elite hockey sense, elite puck skills, elite skating, elite change of direction, and elite passing. What else do you need?

To want to believe it.

For some context to show just how superior of a talent he is even to a guy like Nathan MacKinnon who had 77 points in 44 games...McDavid will get to that mark in almost half the games.

thinking about it like this really does floor me. good god.

Yeah. Mackinnon was one hell of a prospect too. I don't see McDavid putting up 63 points in his rookie year. McD will be better than Mackinnon but won't compare to his rookie year IMO mainly due to the kind of team he will be on.

Mcdavid is going to be a great player but I'm not really sold on his generational status. I think he will be on Stamkos and Tavares' level in the NHL which isn't bad at all but it isn't close to Crosby and Malkin.

I'd be happy if McDavid can be as good as Malkin.

Stamkos "isn't close" to Malkin? :help:

how many points did crosby have in his draftyear after 17 games? mantha last year? drouin?

Malkin is a 3x 100 point player, Art Ross winner and is over a 100 points above PPG. That is rare. I think only Crosby, Ovie and Malkin are 100+ points above PPG.

Stamkos is a star but he hasn't even hit 100 points yet and it's quite likely that he might never do it. I see McDavid the same way. He will be a franchise player but I don't think he will be as good as people are hoping he will be.

Last year Mantha had 20 goals, 23 assists for 43 points in 17 games
Drouin had 13 goals, 26 assists for 39 points in 17 games.

Just did a quick check on the OHL website and he's only been on for 5(!!!) even strength goals against all year. Incredible considering the amount of ice-time he gets.

The way the puck follows McDavid around every time he's on the ice, not surprising other teams aren't scoring against him.

Precisely. Which is why I am always irritated when offensive players aren't given a fair shake because their "defensive game" isn't "good". It's short sighted.

What people seem to forget is that elite offensive players should control the puck and have little NEED to be rushing back to their defensive zone every 3 minutes.

A great offense is defense enough.

Besides constantly controlling the puck, I've seen him run down puck carriers and take the puck away plenty of times this year as well. He's definitely strong defensively on top of being elite in possession

so sid had quite a "slow" start...from 2.23 to 2.71 ppg...i highly doubt that cmd is gonna hold his 2.88...150-160 points are realistic

Crosby scored at about 3.5 PPG clip after the WJCs.

I don't think McDavid can unseat Crosby as the best prospect since Lindros/Mario. Crosby's 16 year old season was so much better than McDavid's, he would need to do more than just keep up his current pace.

I always felt like Connor was holding back a bit last year. Maybe the extra size he put on has given him a bit more confidence.

If McDavid scores 170+, it will certainly put him in Crosby category, and maybe even greater.

Draft season matters much much much more than 16 yo season

Wat. They're 17 year olds, they're still rapidly developing, even as the season progresses. Of course Crosby started slow and got better as the year went on. McDavid should be expected to do the same. The scary thing is that if Crosby jumped from 2.23 -> 3.5 ppg in the second half of the season, how much will McDavid jump? He might end up hitting 4 ppg or more! The new year's McDavid special might be 2g 4a.

You can't expect too many points from the kid because it gets to the point where it is running up the score.

By this logic Tavares is >> McDavid because in his 16/17 year old season he put up 134 points. Every player develops at a different rate.

Very unlikely. But i'd never doubt the kid.

With McDavid being 6 months older and in his 3rd year of CHL hockey, perhaps the better prospect rating will be retroactive after a year or two in the NHL.

Crosby was more impressive at age 14, 15 and 16. We'll see if McDavid's jump this year from last year translates into the NHL (if he can maintain his current pace).
