Barzal is closer to McDavid than Benson. They were both outstanding at the AllState game last year.

I got to see a little bit of Barzal and wow, he looked great. Haven't really seen or heard much for the last year though.

Size won't be an issue with McDavid, and he's not really that small anyway for his age. 5'11 at 15/16 isn't short. I noticed he's listed at 180lbs for Team Canada, that's probably exaggerated though.

If we're just looking at stats I think the difference between McDavid and Tavares is negligible. Considering where they placed in the league at their age, the rate that other players scored, their team, etc, it's a wash in my opinion. The next two years will be way more telling than this season for McDavid. Looks like a super-talent to me.

In comparisons to their rookie seasons, the top-5 scorers on each team, in each year:

Oshawa Generals 2005-06:

Peter Tsimikalis - GP64, G29, A70, Pts99
John Tavares - GP65, G 45, A32, Pts77
Cal Clutterbuck - GP66, G35, A33, Pts68
Dale Mitchell - GP65, G20, A23, Pts43
Brett MacLean - GP35, G13, A25, Pts38

Eries Otters 2012-13:

Connor Brown - GP63, G28, A41, Pts69
Connor McDavid - GP63, G25, A41, Pts66
JP Labardo - GP67, G24, A38, Pts62
Luke Cairns - GP68, G12, A29, Pts41
Adam Pelech - GP59, G8, A32, Pts40

There's no doubt who played with the better players, in their rookie seasons. McDavid trailed the leading scorer on the Otters by 3 points, Tavares trailed the leading scorer on the Generals by 22 points.

Well this settles it. He is not going to be as good as cal clutterbuc

^^ Lol nevermind that Erie is epic garbage and the Gens were a great team then. That has more of an effect on a player's stats in junior than it does in the AHL or NHL

ye the other night they said if they had the choice between Jones or forfeiting the pick for McDavid, everyone would do it for McDavid lol

Jesus...

Is he considered a Generational Talent? 10 years after Crosby was drafted...

I haven't heard the words "generational talent" be said this early, but for all the players dubbed the next Crosby, going back to Kessel as the "american Crosby", Tavares, ESPOSITO  etc. he looks like the closest to his style & all around ability at the same age and the first one that seems deserving of that type of praise.

Few people remember but Crosby had some doubters/haters as well

I don't think McDavid's going to be as good as Crosby in the NHL. But a perennial 90-point player, with a few 100-point seasons mixed in? Yeah, that looks like what he could be at this point.

I'm not trying to cap his ceiling, because it looks like it's honestly up to him at this point, but I just don't see the natural goal-scoring ability to put up 40-50 goals in the NHL at this point. Yes, I know he's leading the U18s in goal-scoring, and he's scored in different ways, I'm more going on what I saw in the OHL this year.

30G, 60A, consistent scorer.

he's 16 years old, keep that in mind with what he's been able to do without adult strength.

I can definitely appreciate that point, but I just don't see a 40-50 goal-scorer in the NHL when I watch McDavid, and unless he's putting up 70 assits every year, it's tough to put up 100 points consistently scoring 30 goals a year. That's still an outstanding number, just not enough to be in the same class as Crosby.

I'm certainly a big fan of McDavid, and I'm incredibly impressed every time I watch him play. He literally excels in everything as a hockey player, outside of scoring goals at an elite level. That's not to say he's bad goal-scorer. 30 goals in the NHL is not to be dismissed. I just see him as more of a playmaker, a less a sniper.

Without ever having heard of him before this morning on Sportscentre, I'm skeptical about "the next next Crosby" (What are we at now, like 7 or 8 Crosbys?). That being said, the kid is putting up unreal numbers right now, and it's definitely going to be fun to watch him develop. Hope he only gets better.

I missed the game. How did he look today???

very good, excitement when he touches the puck, always trying things and creating chances for him and his teammates. Of course he was held off the score sheet but could have been easily on it multiple times

Won everything he could at the U-18 tournament. Named Canada's best player, named best forward in the tournament, named tournament MVP and won a Gold Medal.

To be fair, he was held scoreless in the two most important games of the tournament.

He got all the attention for having monster games early on and then was held pointless when it really mattered.

McDavid is better than Tavares at the same age. Please don't quote stats because they don't mean anything. McDavid was dominant this season, if you watched him play live you would know this. And his stats went down at the end of the year because the coaches knew they weren't going to make the playoffs so they decreased his ice time by a fair margin to not wear him out.

Held scoreless but was still a factor. If Klimchuk doesn't choke and puts in the easy goal thanks to McDavid, McDavid gets at least one assist. He's still a double underager that no one else could keep up with.

But hat tricks against Sweden & Czech Republic, two nontraditional hockey countries is irrelevant because he didn't score "when it mattered" :sarcasm:

He set up multiple chances and became the focus of the opponents defense. They figured if they shut down McDavid they'd shut down Canada and they were wrong. He took on a significant defensive role, can't count how many battle he won outside the opponents blue lines.

I've never really been a big Don Hay fan but apparently he took McDavid aside and talked to him about being more responsible defensively in the last couple games and he did just that.

Anyone know where I can watch highlights of McDavid at the tournament? TSN video appears to be down

Exactly. He helped the team win, that was the only thing that was important

Did you watch those two games? He created multiple scoring chances in both of them that coulda went either way. Don't understand people downplaying what he just did this tournament, its really something special. You don't see many players that are playing with the same age group dominate and create excitement that often, let alone a kid who is a double underager.

People downplayed (some still downplay) Sidney Crosby. Most of the time it's because those people bought into a player like Angelo Esposito so now they're careful to buy in to "the next big thing"

Also doesn't help when the media compare players to Crosby all the time, like Phil Kessel, John Tavares, Nathan MacKinnon, even though they're not quite at that level even though they're really really good young players.

I still don't think it's fair to say he's the next Crosby but I think it's fair to say he's the most Crosby-like player at this age that I've ever seen... since Crosby  It makes sense because he models his game after his favorite player, Sidney Crosby, and excels at many of the same skills as Sidney Crosby.

C- Connor McDavid (2015 NHL Draft)

Just wanted to see everyone's thoughts on him. I saw him play once vs. the 67's and he impressed me but he wowed me with his U18's highlights.

Of course they're highlights, but so far he looks like the real deal to me.
