Tavares as a 15 years old: 77 pts in 65 games
McDavid as a 15 years old: 66 pts in 63 games

Tavares was slightly better at that age.

I'd like to see McDavid put up these numbers next year:

67GP - 72G - 62A - 134P

I think he was talking about the guy you quoted

bahahaha that makes a lot more sense. That really confused me

Point production is everything. That's why Nic Petan is going #1 overall this season :sarcasm:

Plus Tavares played with a few good players in his first season whereas McDavid played with a Leafs draft pick that had a -72 last season (Sorry leaf fans lol)

In addition, Tavares was about 5 months younger.

Maybe McDavid shows up to the OHL next year and puts up 100 points or maybe he shows up and puts up 15 points. Neither would surprise me.

For anyone curious, Crosby put up 135 points in 59 games at 16.

Why do people keep bringing up his junior stats when they didn't translate to the NHL

JT only had 5 points in 7GP at the U18s at this age compared to McDavid's 14pts in 5 games. Obviously he's 3 times better then JT :sarcasm:

The kid has tons of skill and talent, but man.. I've heard from a bunch of people that he's one of the cockiest players they've ever spoken to... hopefully it's just a youth thing and it'll pass cuz that's not the kind of personality I want in a team. He is only 15 and has time to mature.
Honestly, wouldn't you be cocky if you were granted exceptional status to play in the OHL at age 16 and if everyone hyped you as one of the best prospects since Sidney Crosby?

ye I know kids who act(ed) like they were McDavid when they were playing Midget A. At least he has a reason to be cocky  and he'll be surrounded with plenty of good hockey people mentoring him, so maturing shouldn't be an issue when you have the skills this kid has

It's a smaller sample size. I know you're a big McDavid homer, and only want to hear "he's the best", but I think JT was better at the same age... Right now, Jr. stats are pretty much the only measuring stick we have.

What JT did in the OHL was flat out insane! Don't get me wrong, I think McDavid is an amazing talent, I just don't think we'll see another 16yr old score 70+ goals in the O.

Erie was the worst team in the league by none last year. Entire team was insanely negative, doesn't mean hes a bad player.

Brown is a very good prospect with NHL upside.

Are u bored or just trolling for fun? That statement u make is incorrect. He is the opposite of cocky. He is humble, down to earth and never wants to talk about himself. Kids are jealous of him, whoever told u that is very distant from the situation. The media all they do is ask questions about him, he defers to the team constantly.

The kid showed up in Erie camp with his old torn minor midget gear on, he didnt want to make his team-mates think he made the team. That he was there to work and earn it. Does it get any more humble than that? Case closed.

How am I a big McDavid homer? I only mentioned his name the last two days :laugh:k

Tavares was a better 15 year old. That shouldn't be up to debate, the same people saying you can't look at their production (Besides, production isn't the teason) probably didn't watch both of them at 15 either. McDavid relied a little too much on his physical talents, which were eventually adjusted to and he hit the rookie wall, with his play grinding to a halt. He had a phenomenal rookie year, but towards the end he was having so many bad games as team after team shut him down. Tavares never hit that wall, and it's not because he played on a better team.

Scoring was way higher back then than it is now.

McDavid's probably not going to put up those numbers, certainly not the goals, but I could definitely see 40 goals, and 65 assists, which would have been 4 points behind the scoring leader in the OHL from this season.

It should be pointed out, the year that you bring up, Tavares wasn't even the leading scorer in the league and 9 players scored 100+ points - 5 of which put up 115+ points. This past year, only 3 players scored 100+ points and none broke 115 points. That's not likely to change next year.

In comparisons to their rookie seasons, the top-5 scorers on each team, in each year:

Oshawa Generals 2005-06:

Peter Tsimikalis - GP64, G29, A70, Pts99
John Tavares - GP65, G 45, A32, Pts77
Cal Clutterbuck - GP66, G35, A33, Pts68
Dale Mitchell - GP65, G20, A23, Pts43
Brett MacLean - GP35, G13, A25, Pts38

Eries Otters 2012-13:

Connor Brown - GP63, G28, A41, Pts69
Connor McDavid - GP63, G25, A41, Pts66
JP Labardo - GP67, G24, A38, Pts62
Luke Cairns - GP68, G12, A29, Pts41
Adam Pelech - GP59, G8, A32, Pts40

There's no doubt who played with the better players, in their rookie seasons. McDavid trailed the leading scorer on the Otters by 3 points, Tavares trailed the leading scorer on the Generals by 22 points.

and Tavares was always more of a goal scorer, he had a 70 assist overager on his team.

McDavid is more of a two-way playmaking center who is already considered one of the best skaters in the OHL

For reference sake,

McDavid finished 30th in OHL scoring this year.

Tavares finished 27th in OHL scoring in his rookie year with two more games played.

They were effectively equal in their rookie years in relation to their competition. Tavares played with better players. McDavid slowed down a lot near the end.

Why is nobody in this thread but myself mentioning the physical maturity difference between the two?

Connor looks like Bieber....Tavares looked 18 at 14 years old.

Crosby looked like Bieber when he was 23 and still can't grow facial hair

FWIW....Bob MacKenzie just said on TSN that if McDavid was available this year...he would go #1...even at age 16!!

ye the other night they said if they had the choice between Jones or forfeiting the pick for McDavid, everyone would do it for McDavid lol

Tanking for McDavid

Not sure if a thread has already been created, and I know that its two years away but what do you guys think of even odds for all teams in the McDavid sweepstakes? The more I watch this kid the more he seems like he's the next Crosby even though Sid's only 25. Kid put up 66 points in 63 games as a 15 year old and will surely break the 100+ point barrier next season barring any drastic injuries as a 16 year old.

My question is, and I know it was a different circumstance back then because it was a lockout that enabled each team to have an equal shot at 1st overall and it just so happened to be Crosby's draft year but nonetheless, do you believe that no matter who finishes last, every team should get equal opportunity for the right to draft McDavid? Each team gets the same number of lottery balls no matter who finishes last because I think there may be some serious tanking efforts by a few teams that season to get this kid, they see what Crosby has done and they likely wouldn't mind having a kid dubbed the next Crosby

It may be controversial but I think that this should be the case, a talent like this should be granted exceptional status and every team should have the same chance of grabbing him. So whadaya say? Equal chances no matter who finishes last? Or keep it how it is?
