C Connor McDavid - Erie Otters, OHL (2015 Draft) II

Biggest comparable between Crosby & McDavid is that there were a lot of haters who tried to discredit them both when they were teenagers.

He doesn't appear to be on Crosby's level so far but I still see the potential for him to rival him in his prime. I have a hard time seeing McDavid hit 100 points in his rookie season but by all means, I'd love to see it.

Maybe a comparison for Connor McDavid is... Patrick Kane with exceptional vision and Hockey IQ?

The way he moves around the ice reminds me a lot of Phil Kessel, he skates a lot like him. I also see a lot of Patrick Kane in his game/skill-set.

I don't think there's a single person you can compare Connor McDavid's game to. He has a weak shot, explosive speed, great vision, great hands, a very high hockey IQ and not a lot of strength.

As ridiculous as it may sound, if you were to combine aspects of John Tavares, Phil Kessel and Patrick Kane you would have a player like McDavid. The way he moves around the ice reminds me a lot of Kessel, he skates a lot like him. I also see a lot of Kane in his game/skill-set but he doesn't have the shot either of these two players posses. Add in a bit of Tavares (the way he thinks the game, not the goal-scoring/power moves - Kane and Kessel rely a lot more on their skill than positioning like Tavares does) and maybe you have McDavid.

I don't mean to say McDavid is a combination of the three's skill-sets forming some super-player, just that if you forced me to compare him to a player, I would combine 3 aspects of Kessel, Kane and Tavares' game.

I do think this strength issue is cause for concern with McDavid making the WJC team this year - or playing significant minutes if he does against the better countries. McDavid certainly had a great U18 tournament but was neutralized for the most part as the tournament went into the medal round and he faced stiffer competition. I saw him at the Lake Placid camp this summer and Team USA almost made him invisible. While my viewings of McDavid are limited, I have seen him play against the best of the best from the other top hockey countries and it seemed like his lack of strength was a factor in his performance. Just like sully61 said, give him a couple years and he'll be fine - Hockey Canada might be thinking the same thing.

Heard that Otters just acquired Gaunce last night, I dont watch the OHL and am not to familiar with Erie but do others see this could possibly raise McDavid's production?

His production dropped off later in the tournament because teams based their game around shutting him down. If you shut down McDavid then you had a chance of beating Canada. If you didn't key in on him and let him play then he was gonna hurt you. The fact that other teams focused on him instead of the older players tells you everything you need to know about him.

True, but that's my point. I don't think he is strong enough - right now - to fight through great opponents if they key on him. It's a little different if Latvia keys on him versus the US, Russia, etc. That's why I think if he makes the team it will be in a sheltered role and not the guy other teams key in on - just like Crosby in 2004. The one and only Team Canada 16 year old to be a major cog at the WJC was Gretzky. Lindros and Crosby were not "THE cog in the wheel" for Team Canada as 16 year olds - and both were significantly more physically developed than McDavid - yet many posters on here think he will be a cog. Maybe he will prove me wrong, but I don't think it is fair for posters to view McDavid as the savior for this year' s team.

He hasn't been putting up Crosby like points, but can someone comment on hiw he looks, is he playing better than his points suggest?

I actually think his game is better suited for the big ice at this point. For me I would take him.

Not a Mcdavid hater, I still thinks hes one of the best talents in recent years. However I think the hype will die down a bit over the coming year(s). People are going to begin to find flaws in his game and will be able to expoliate him.

People need to stop comparing him to Crosby. Crosby destroyed the Q at his age. 54 goals in his first season and 154 points. He also outscored teammates by ~50 points

Mcdavid is on pace for 21 over a 63 game season. Good for his age, but an insult to Crosby

He will be comparable to a JT/Kane coming out of junior unless he absolutly tears it up

Who cares about his numbers and whether or not they compare to Crosby in the Q (IN THE Q)? Watch the kid play and you'll see he's the most well rounded hockey player in junior hockey in the last 8-10 years.

Reading through this thread just screams John Tavares 2.0.
When he "only" has a 50-60 point rookie season, can't for the "but he has potential" lines, or the bad linemates excuse.

Generational players like Crosby/Ovechkin/Malkin step right out the gate, dominate and only get better from there, their rookie season's would be a career year for many players, they don't follow the developmental stages of your average 1st overall.
